  13. Little history for those who don't know : Sikhsangat.com waz first started by daljeet (TO), amardeep (UK) and me (CAL) .. and none of us were amritdhari by that time (still waitin for amar to take khalsa flight) and neither we had much knowledge about dozens of A-Z jathas.. (certainly not me).. So at the end it's a neutral place for anyone SIkh = Sikh There is no A sikh, B sikh or Z Sikh.. (It's boundry created by our mind and i think we should think outside of box

  16. I compiled below writing from sikh-history and many other sikh sites.. so if u see any minstake.. just let me know .. thanks ------------ "Signigicance of Our HAIR" "All your sins can be pardoned if you become a Muslim and cut and give me those long hair of yours " said by Muslim governer to Bhai Taru Singh. Bhai Taru Singh said, "I shall keep my faith with these hair and you shall be controlled by my shoes and with these you will die." The Governor was beside himself with rage on hearing this. He got Bhai Taru Singh mounted on rotating wheels of torture and then from a cobbler got his scalp removed so that hair may not grow again. After that he got him thrown in a ditch. **************************************** Then Sikhs also got the five symbols from Guru Gobind singh ji, Bhai Nand lal wrote: "These five letters of K are emblems of Sikhism. These five are most incumbent, Steel Bangle, big knife, shorts and a comb; without unshorn hair the other four are of no significance" **************************************** Sardar Sukkha Singh Kalsi (d.1752): Great Sikh warrior "His parents, apprehensive of the government's wrath, one day cut off his hair as he lay asleep. Sukkha Singh on waking up felt so disturbed at this sacrilege that he decided to put an end to his life, andiumped into a well. He resisted the people' s effort to pull him out, until a Sikh who was passing by advised him that it was sheer cowardice and a sin for a Sikh to take his own life. Sukkha Singh allowed himself to be helped out, regrew his kesa and joined the jatha or band of Sardar Shiam Singh." **************************************** Zakariya Khan continued to carry out his policy of repression with redoubled zeal. A Pitiless campaign for a manhunt was started. Sikhs heads sold for money and Mughals offered a prize for each head brought to them. According to Ratan Singh Bhangu, "He who informed where a Sikh was received 10 rupees, he who killed one received 50." But Sikhs never cuts their hair, not even when Muslim put price on their heads. **************************************** Prior to his release from prison in Lahore, the well-known Shaheed Bhagat Singh, who was waiting execution in the same prison, expressed a desire to have Bhai Sahib's darshan before his death. On being approached, Bhai Sahib refused to see him saying "...he has violated the basic tenets of Sikhism by shaving off his hair and hence I do not want to see him." Bhagat Singh was quick to express his repentance and also confessed that he, in fact, was an atheist at heart. He further told Bhai Sahib that even then, perhaps, he would have kept the Sikh appearance, but if he had done that he would have lost the friendship and sympathy of his Hindu comrades and would not have received so much publicity in the press. After a two hour meeting with Bhai Sahib, he became a true Sikh at heart and later went to the gallows as a true believer in Sikhism. **************************************** Zakraya Khan, who made head-hunting a profitable business by offering a graded scale of rewards: a blanket for cutting off a Sikh's hair, ten rupees for information of the whereabouts of a Sikh, fifty rupees for a Sikh scalp. Sikhs or withholding information of their movements was made a capital offence. Zakraya's police scoured the countryside and brought back hundreds of Sikhs in chains. They were publicly beheaded at the nakhas, the horsemarket of Lahore, since then renamed Sahidganj (place of martyrdom), in memory of the dead. (After these acts, Turban Sikhs still survive) ****************************************

  18. "It was June 28th, 1981. At 7 o'clock in the morning, Afghan Airways(from Afghanistan) carrier took-off its flight from Raja Sansi airport in Amritsar and headed towards the city. It had not gone up very high in the air when it started flying around the Golden Temple(Holy Harmandir Sahib) complex with one wing lower than the other. I was sitting besides the window and got my first chance to see the beauty of Darbar Sahib from a height. It was a really superb sight down below and appeared to be like a heaven has been decorated. Later, after reaching full height and heading towards its destination, breakfast was being served. When the air hostess came to me to serve the breakfast, I requested her to convey my thanks to the flight Captain for showing us a beautiful glimpse of the Darbar Sahib. In reply she told me that this Afghani Captain has a great reverent devotion for the Golden Temple. Whenever our flight team under the captaincy of this pilot comes to Amritsar, then under any circumstance, we do go to visit Darbar Sahib in the night time like sincere devotees and pray to the wonderful Lord for our welfare. In the morning when the plane takes off, the Captain flies around the Golden Temple complex as a mark of respect. During this period, he keeps the plane tilted in salute and conveys his, crew's and passengers' respect to the Golden Temple. By doing this he and all of us are delighted and his action keeps a feeling of sacredness in our hearts for the rest of the day. We always look forward to this flight." *********************** Thought: "ustat baran(i) na sakiye sad sad kurbana" (His praises can't be described. I sacrifice on H im hundred times.)

  23. Amritsar Capped with a big golden dome, proudly erected in the heart of a miserly town, flagship of a pitful squadron, from the top of its bronze walls muffles the big temple murmurs of coloured believers and complaints of the martyrs of its faith. Amritsar! Gone is meditation time, stopped are these religious moanings, suppressed usual psalms covering your cold obstinacy. Open is the road for confrontations fights, massacres of their faith. Amritsar Out of the fiery mouths of cannon spitting the darkest intolerance towards you one day shall the clouds of hope go hoaxing liturgical fabric for ever. Amritsar! Amritsar ! Hope and life of a sickly people keep forgiveness in your conch for the foe (who is) thousand times too many who tramples on your faithful platonic lovers. Amritsar! Amritsar!
  24. MIRACLE DURING WORLD WAR II Bhai Ranjit Singh Kaki Pind, Jalandhar In 1964, when some of the holy weapons of Guru Gobind Singh were brought back from England, an Englishman, in complete Sikh form accompanied the weapons. The Englishman was asked by someone the reason for his adopting the Sikh form. Was it due to respect for the weapons or was there any other reason? The explanation given by him at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is being reproduced for the benefit of the readers. " My name was A. David. I happened to be commanding a Sikh Regiment during World War II. My Regiment suffered very heavy losses fighting the Germans. Most of the "jawans" (soldiers) of my Battalion were killed. Only a few survived and we were all surrounded by the Germans. As there were very remote chances of our survival, I called the Subedar major of the Battalion and informed him about our precarious situation. Death was facing us and there was no chance of our survival. I suggested to him that the jawans should individually attempt to escape from the enemy encirclement and save their lives. "The Subedar Major replied, 'We cannot bring ignominy to the Sikh Regiment by running away from the battlefield.' However, he had a suggestion that they should perform "Akhand-Path" ceremony and take action as per the Divine Hukam (Holy Command). Accordingly, necessary security arrangements were made and the Akhand-Path ceremony was completed without interruption. After the supplicatory prayer ("Ardas"), the Divine Hukam from the Holy Book was explained to me by Subedar Major and the religious teacher ("granthi"). As per the Divine Hukam, we sho uld not abandon the battlefield; victory will be ours. "Then I conveyed to them the miracle that I had witnessed during the supplicatory prayer. While standing with my eyes closed during the Ardas, a fully armed Sikh on horseback with a unique grandeur appeared in front of me and ordered 'Follow me.' I pointed out the direction in which the fully armed Sikh went after giving the order and asked them about the identity of the warrior. The Subedar Major said that as per my description, he was none other than Guru Gobind Singh. "So, we got ready and launched an attack in the direction pointed out by the Guru. After a short while, we were able to break through the German encirclement and save ourselves. We then got in touch with the Brigade Cammander on wireless and requested for additional help. " After the war, I reflected upon the incident and the divine personality who had saved my and my men's lives from an impregnable enemy encirclement in a desperate situation by ordering me to follow him. I made up my mind to follow him for the rest of my life. I resigned from the Army and along with my daughter, embraced Sikhism with the initiation ceremony of the Khalsa. Now my name is Devinder Singh and my daughter's name is Surjit Kaur.....This is due to the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh that he took pity on us and made us his disciples." This incident was narrated to me by my younger brother Sardar Raghbir Singh (Retired Subedar), who happened to be present at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib on the day the Englishman (Devinder Singh) narrated his above mentioned personal experience.
