  2. Motorway crash victims identified Four people killed in the crash were members of one family Five people who were killed in a head-on crash on the M1 in Bedfordshire have been identified. They died on Saturday night when a VW Passat headed the wrong way up the southbound carriageway near Dunstable and hit a Jaguar, police said. Lakhdip Nagra, 27, his sister Navjit, 28, their mother Inderjit, 48, all from south-east London and Chain Singh, 66, from India, died in the Jaguar. The driver of the Passat was Mariusz Adamski, 24, from Leicester. Police said Mr Adamski was originally from Poland. Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out later and inquests will be opened on Wednesday at Bedford's Coroner's Court. The Nagra family and Mr Singh, an uncle, had been at a family gathering in the Midlands and were returning to their home in Littleheath Road, Bexleyheath, when the crash happened. Police said the crash occurred shortly before roadworks began on the M1. The southbound carriageway between junctions 10 and 11 was closed for several hours while police dealt with the scene.
  3. Coventry builder in racist hammer attack Apr 9 2009 by Emma Stone, Coventry Telegraph A COVENTRY builder is lucky to be alive after a thug fractured his skull with a lump hammer during an unprovoked racist attack. Ranbir Hayer has been told by doctors he could have been paralysed by the savage assault. It happened while he was building a wall in the front garden of a home in Walsgrave. The bricklayer was struck on the back of his head, dangerously close to his spine. He has been left with continuous headaches and was unable to feed himself in the days following the incident. The 26-year-old married man was working in Hall Lane with a colleague when two men walked by and shouted racist abuse. Moments later they returned and launched a sickening attack on the pair. During the attack, one of the men grabbed the lump hammer Mr Hayer had been using and smashed it in to Mr Hayer’s skull. The assault happened at 5.30pm on March 30. The attackers fled and their victim was rushed to University Hospital, Walsgrave. He has undergone scans and x-rays and the wound on the back of his head was glued shut. Mr Hayer’s colleague was was beaten by the other attacker and was treated by paramedics at the scene. Mr Hayer said: “When you go out to work you don’t expect someone is going to hit you with a lump hammer. “I’m having continuous headaches and for the first few days I couldn’t sleep.” The self-employed bricklayer has been unable to work since the attack. His wife of three-and-a-half years has been caring for her husband since the attack. She said: “I received a phonecall from his colleague who said he had been injured and that he had been taken to hospital. “I was told what had happened when I got there - I was in a right state, I didn’t know what was going on. “It only just missed his spine. These people are sick-minded, it’s disgusting.” Detective Inspector Nigel Harrison, of Stoney Stanton Road police station, said: “We are actively investigating the matter and we have linked up with members of the Sikh community. “We are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Fortunately, incidents of this type are extremely rare.” Anyone with information is urged to call the police on 0845 113 5000. Information can also be passed to the police in confidence, via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  8. Vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh Two men young Sikh builders in Coventry had been building a wall in the Walsgrave area when they where set upon by two white youths he approached them shouting racist abuse, one of the racists punched one the Sikh guys and a scuffle started which resulted in one of the white youths being knocked to the ground. Close to where he fell was a hammer, taking the opportunity, he picked up the hammer and attacked one the Sikh guys, first striking his hand followed by a blow to the back of the skull which left him unconscious. This is a warning to all the community to beaware as people’s attitudes are changing, and in times of recession racism usually goes on the increase. Vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

  11. Ok some great repsonses, intresting how one thing is for sure that there is a lack of spirituality being preached in the Gurdwara sahibs.
  12. Back to basics!!. What better role of the Gurdwara then to provide the environment to sit in the Sangat roop and to partake in Langer in the Pangat roop. The “innovations” are just our egos thinking that the core activities within a Gurdwara are not adequate enough. At the end of the day whatever social esteems we have, our aim is to realize it’s the spiritual needs which are core. The trap that the Sikh community are falling into is that we think we need to sell the Gurdwara as a product catering for the personal needs of all. We think that we need a cake cutting soft party room or ladies aerobic centre or or elderly day centre or bouncy castle facilities. We want to arrange comedy nights and fun days to attract punters. If anything, this could be digressive for our spiritual progression. Think back to the times of our puratan ancestors. Did they bog themselves down with this kind of concern? Intresting poitn veerji , and I can see where your coming from , only problem we have is that most of our Gurdwaray have been functioning as you have stated with Sangat and Pangat concpets but what is evident is a declien in Gurdwara attendees aswell as a shift in the average age of attenddees whcih is closer to 60. If we carry on blindly we will be no different than the Christians who are now faced with seeling off Churches. The youth of today do not understand gurbani and therefore there is no pull for them when they to the Gurdwara, the elders don't have the village atmosphere where they are still cared for and can socialise with other elders, in this country many elders are left home alone and as the trend amongst youth has becoem to move out from the parentla home once married more and more elders are left in vunerable situations. By adding new and innovative ideas to the Gurdwara system it doesn't in any way deman the existing format. The introduction of ideas such as Sikhitothemax in to gurdwara's has only helped to bridge the gap in understadign between the youth of today and Guru ji.
