I think they may end up confusing the prabhandak committees of Ramgharia (B'ham, Cov, Small Heath, Leicester, Woolwich)/Grays/Sunderland/Hudersfield Gurdwaras when they serve the "mocktails" and vegetarian food... Not sure if some of our prabhandaks know what a non-alcoholic drink tastes like... On a serious note, I really hope these awards are not just used as tool to self-promote the selected few...and genuinely push foward the raw talent we have hidden in our community!

That's a valid point. China successfully used the Beijing Olympics to announce their arrival on the world stage. Stadiums were finished on time and millions of Chinese were involved in spectacular show. India's Commonwealth fiasco has underlined the spectacular inefficiency of the modern Indian State relative to that of China. India is a country where big projects underachieve because of the inadequate supervision, poor infrastructure and universal corruption from top to bottom. The recent triumphs of the Indian economy have been private sector successes not State successes. China's triumphs are very different, it is a country powered by its mass manufacturing sector, assisted by a powerful State with increasingly world class infrastructure.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Congratulations on recieving the bakshish of kes. I suppose we don't really see anyone matha tek anything else or anyone else besides Guru Granth Sahib Ji's Saroop in the darbar sahib so it arouses a reaction when it's done. Too be honest, if I saw it I would probably find it unusual too. I'm not saying its against gurmat. But the norm for the sangat is to do their matha tek in front of Maharaj's saroop in Darbar Sahib. This is my opinion (please don't see it as an attack)....sometimes it's better to remain out of the reach of the radar by not "over performing" your matha tek in darbar sahib, especially when there's lots of people around. You'll find that people just think you're showing off and you get an audience of beady/confused eyes following you around the Gurdwara. Also kids and naive members of the sangat get really confused when some people matha tek Sants or Shastars or the Sangat or the Kirtaniya or Degh.

My cousin went to a wedding in Punjab and the family let of some simple fireworks when the doli came home. Around an 2 hours later, the Police turned up stinking of booze. They said that they had reports that someone was firing a gun and accused the family of possessing illegal arms. They wanted to take a member of the family in custody. After some negotiation the Police left with a wad of cash and took no one into custody. This happened in Ludhiana in October 2009. My cousin told me that that's life in modern Punjab. You just accept it and watch your backside all the time and be ready with cash to negotiate your way out of situations.

Don't know how I ended up reading this old thread...,but I found it strangely interesting. I must confess, I agree that a domalla or a gol dastar gives a different perception to a kenyan/triangular dastaar. Being someone who "evolved" into a dommalla from a kenyan dastaar, I feel that peoples' (and my own) perception changed. Some reactions are postive, some reactions are negative and some of the reactions I just end up taking advantage of. It's a matter personal opinion however, I feel I became more accountable as a Sikh when I started wearing the dommella.....I suppose everyone has their own experiences and it's different for everyone.

The Devil and the Way of the Guru By Dr. Kanwar Ranvir Singh The focus of the Guru is on purifying the heart and becoming more Life-centred/Naam-centred and realising that the self is part of Life and supported by it, so there is no gain by being self-centred, to the exclusion of others. By drawing Life into ones life, we become lamps for the Light that is God. Then, we can spread that Light to others. The whole technology of gurmat (Way of the Guru) is for this purpose. Since gurmat is about how we live Life, most people tend to regard discussion of spirits as superstition, or at best irrelevant. This is unfortunate since there is nothing in Guru Granth Sahib Ji/Gurbani or the daily prayers which is not for our benefit. That various spirits exist is mentioned many times in Gurbani. In common with many indigenous traditions, there is mention of the elemental spirits of water and fire, and mother earth (mata dharat mahat), various Hindu gods and goddesses, the prophets mentioned in the Semitic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), many Buddhas and others. Free from the confusion that this world is all there is, the spirits cannot be sincere atheists. Whether they serve or rebel against God, they remember the Name. Demons, angels, snake kings of hell, and sprites utter the Name all the time. (Tav Prasad Swayyas, verse 7, third of morning prayers) However, in this material world, people often go on to worship these other spirits rather than God. It is different from remembering dead beloved ones. What happens to those we loved after death? The angel of death is sometimes called Yama, by which name he is also known to the Jains, Buddhists and Hindus, and Azrael, which is what the Muslims call him. The soul is taken from the body and then taken to the Divine Court for Divine Justice. According to our good and evil deeds, people are placed in heavens (rewards) and hells (punishment). According to the Guru the real devil is the devil inside, our hau-mai or ego-centredness which is born of and leads to ignorance. The opposite, of course, is the Sikh or student of Life. If our choices were meaningless, we would not be alive, but mere puppets. Gods gift of life, Gods love for us, implies that our choices matter. Therein, is the risk of evil and disaster. We have five energies which are supposed to serve us, to be under our control pride, anger, lust, greed, and attachment. When these control us, we behave like devils. Those devoid of love for God are ego-centred goblins how long can they find consolation? (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, p.305). Those seeking God outside the self are misguided goblins (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, p.309). Why? Because it denies that God is with us and in us. We are part of Life/God as well as a gift from Life. The dancer is in the dance yet the dance cannot be compared to the dancer. Similarly, Gods Light is in all things, even as God stands outside creation. WaheGuru dwells with us as reflection in a mirror, fragrance in a flower, fire within wood. If one dissects and analyses a mirror, a flower, or a piece of wood, one will not find these things in there, yet our own experience tells us that they are in there somewhere. Similarly, the law of karma, of right and wrong, is universally written on every heart as common sense, and the law of wird, of Gods Grace and love for us, reaching out to us, and guiding us to deeper and deeper love for all good and holy things is an unplayed symphony resounding in every fiber of the universe. Through choosing life over death, trusting in Gods help which is always available, we also can say, You have subdued the five evils (five inner energies gone out of direction) and destroyed the torments of death. The purpose of Satan is to take you from God. Therefore, to focus on the negative qualities in yourself or in others is Satans work and not Gods. God is Wahe-Guru, Wah meaning WOW or amazing, Guru meaning Grace. [The heh is the pause in breathing, it is not part of the spelling, but an aspirant/sound in the reciting. It recalls God putting Her Spirit, Her Ruh, Her Breath into the world giving it Life. By reciting the Guru-mantra, one moves towards and joins the streams of praise joining the Ocean of Happiness. There are specific verses of Gurbani which may assist someone who feels touched by evil. Traditionally, people some have advised hymns like Tatti vah na lagaye even the hot wind does not touch…those who turn to God whatever evil they may have done. If we cast our minds back several months, we may remember how the Indian media were attempting to create global hysteria about the revival of "Sikh Militancy" and the so-called threat Sikhs posed to the coming Commonwealth games in Delhi. Pardon me for appearing smug, but now as the Global media reports each Indian built roof and bridge collapse in Delhi and the poor standard of the whole complex, I can't but help but emphasise that this is Maharaj's khed. One year of India's mass media demonisation of Sikhs and it's now turned around with a mass media focus on India. To be honest, those of us that know India, know it still lacks in any real progressive infrastructure, no real value for human life and is still riddled with corruption. This story has really put me on a downer! How can someone lock up or neglect their own father regardless... From what I can make out, we don't seem have the best infrastructure for our Sikh elders and they usually are reliant on their kin when they reach their vunerable ages. Although there tends to be a little panthic focus on Sikh schooling or orphanges, widow colonies, hospitials, disables...I have never come accross an institute in Punjab which supports the elderly who have been disowned by their kin... literally a colony of Sikh Old Peoples home similar to what we see in the West... Is there some kind of Sikh Support institute in Punjab like Pingalwara or Bharu Sahib which supports our elders?

If there is any confusion on whether a party hall is part of a Gurdwara's estate, then it would be in the best interest for the Gurdwara committee to do everything to ensure the disassociation is clear in every single way. Perhaps, the Telford Guru Nanak Gurdwara committee can write something official to show that as representatives of the Sikh faith, they have nothing whatsoever to do with the community centre and it's associated anti-Sikh activities.

If this is the case, then why do almost all references on the interent show the contact details as "Guru Nanak Gurudwara and Sikh Community Center" which appears to be one entity. If this is the case, you need to ensure all databases are updated. Once again, please go and speak directly with Baba Baljit Singh and iron out your concerns. He is in the UK for 10 days and I know from experience Baba Ji will sit with you for hours if the discussion is about the panth. Your issue on credibility is subjective and you will be in a better position to make an objective opinion after you have had a direct discussion with Baba Baljit Singh. Don't rely on second hand judgements.

We have the capability of managing to pinpoint anti-Sikhs issues as they occur. What is seriously lacking in our Kaum (as it stands today) is any strategic/long term approach to tackle those issues or any high level panthic commitment to deal with those issues. What has been started on this thread is valid, there's no denying that. It's perhaps become the norm to see all sorts of skeletons fall out of the Sikh closets.... But what's more shocking is that we can arm ourselves with all the info, collect evidence, produce the videos and then we find ourselves in limbo. We can take "perfect" evidence to our local self appointed committees, jathedars of puratan jathebhandis, show the entire Sikh sangat..even the jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and that's when we find we hit a big glass wall. Because all of a sudden we find our "perfect" evidence highlighting concerning issues mysteriously disappears into a big black hole, where no one wants to look at it again or think about it again. We find that our leaders or elders (and sadly majority of our own community) just aren't interested and we get fobbed off with terms like "sort your own jeevans out first" or "conquer your own vices first"...Yep, again there's no denying that our spiritual jeevans are paramount...spirtual kamai is so important....but let's stop using it as an excuse to do nothing, we need to stop using it as an "opt out" option. Today we have media tools that were not in existence 26 years ago. We have the world wide web, radio, tv, mobile phones. The Sikh perspective of the recent Ludhiana kand was available though video recordings taken by the Singhs themselves, images of the 2500 soiled saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj can be seen by all of us, many other images of anti-Sikh actions can be seen on YouTube. Our parchar is at it's peak, yet our reactions to the parchar is weak! I personally have come to the conclusion that the sooner the common "panth-dardi" Sikh on the street stops passing responsibility of Sikhi to the pretty useless "leadership" and takes on responsiblity themselves, nothing changes...Until then all we can do is carry on living our life full of excuses!

Directly selling meat, alcohol, cigarettes and porn is definitely something any Gursikhs needs to avoid. Today we lack "media savvy" Gursikhs, Baba Baljit Singh is one of the only current Gursikhs whose parchar is relevant for the times we are in. The parchar attacks and challenges the dushts (both internal and external) and the authorities. Take Baba ji out of the equation and you will find that there are very few "high profile" (I can only think of Baba Ranjit Singh Dadriwalay) parcharaks who are openly challenging the system. If we keep on creating doubt around these Gursikhs then we are only stifling another chance of igniting spirit back into the sleeping Sikhs.
