  1. Love or arranged marriage is a debate that could go on forever. However saying that love marriage ends up in divorce is totally unfair. Arraged marriage are not necessarily happy marriage! (I'm not saying that all arranged marriage are unhappy!) As for the "sikh speed dating", I don't think it's really dating as people talk with the purpose of finding a possible match. I doubt people go there out of lust... Perhaps it should be called "sikh speed meeting"?
  2. dunno if this could help: http://www.sikhiwiki.com/index.php/Darbar_sahib "Darbar Sahib refers to the Main Hall within a Sikh Gurdwara. It also refers to the central building at Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. In the phase "Darbar Sahib", the word Darbar means Court and so the terms together refers to the "Guru's Court". This is the hall where the current and perpetual Guru of the Sikh, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is placed on a Takhat or Throne in a prominent central position in the hall."

  4. It's great to wanna bring people back but we also have to make sure that whatever turned them off it the first place is being taking care of, or improve if u want. For example, if people were turned off by the gossip within the Gurudwara going people, it's time we address these kinds of issues during services. Another thing, people need to have their needs met, if not why bother going to Gurudwara? If you don't gain anything spiritually, why bother? Naam simran is a must, not just during samagam (maybe i'm asking for too much?) People must have their needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence met as well. This could be done by organizing different activities catered for different people. Like family counseling, anger management, teenagers, children, and so on. Some churches have a whole bunch of social services offered which are not bad at all...i'm just jolting down ideas here...
  5. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! The camp pictures of the Gurmat camp for kids from the DDO Gurudwara, MOntreal are up: http://www.marketingmix.ca/ Fateh!
  6. One of the reason these events may be occurring more in India as compared to the West is that in the West, most people do not believe in reincarnation. As such if a child comes up with a strange story, parents may attribute it to imaginary make-beliefs stories or imaginary friends.
  7. Thank you Techno Singh ji for putting up the Shabad online with the translation
  8. That's what I thought, thx for confirming that in my head :e:
  9. I didn't know there were Gurudwaras associated with different Gurus! Is it just in names, as in the name of the Gurudwaras or is there another meaning?
  10. All I can say is Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru...
  11. SSA Are you interested in entering the job market or would you be interested in going to graduate school? Doing a masters is very rewarding and can open up different kinds of door. I don't know if you specialized in anything with your business degree (finance, marketing, management, accounting?) but it could be worth looking into. I did a BA in Human relations which is an applied form of psychology, got married, had kids and went back to school to do a masters in administration (very different from my first degree!) i specialized in management, more particularly organizational behaviour and i'm currently doing a thesis on intrinsic motivation in the work place. I love research which is the reason i took an Msc instead of an MBA which is very much applied and more general. I hope to get into teaching and later on do a phd. There are so many options and for different kinds of taste. Some graduate certificate could also be a good complement to your degree as Heera Veerji mentioned. Hope you find your way soon and make sure you enjoy whatever you're doing. Fateh!
  12. अजामलु उधरिआ कहि एक बार ॥ Ajāmal uḏẖriā kahi ėk bār. Ajaamal uttered the Lord's Name once, and was saved Doesn't matter what the Lord's name is: be it Waheguru, Ram, Allah, God, Lord, etc.
  13. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following: ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ Gurmukẖīā muh sohṇė gur kai hėṯ piār. Beautiful are the faces of the Gurmukhs, who bear love and affection for the Guru. ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥ Sacẖī bẖagṯī sacẖ raṯė ḏar sacẖai sacẖiār. Through true devotional worship, they are attuned to Truth; at the True Door, they are found to be true. ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਕਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥੭॥ Āė sė parvāṇ hai sabẖ kul kā karahi uḏẖār. ||7|| Blessed is their coming into being; they redeem all their ancestors. ||7|| What does " they redeem all their ancestors" mean? I though karma was an individual thing but maybe i'm wrong? Or i don't get the meaning at all Fateh!

  15. You could look at other alternative medicine such as aromatherapy, which uses the essence of plants, or naturopathy, which uses mainly diet (what you eat) and supplements. You could make a search for whatever you have and natural medicine
  16. Ok it's my turn... I grew up in a non Sikh family, although we were very spiritual and attended church a few times a week. I got involve in as a Sunday school teacher, played piano at church and went to different countries to do volunteer work (which i loved!). However, in Christianity you have to believe in Jesus only if you want to be saved. Having many friends from different religion in college, I started questioning some of my beliefs but never my love for God. Anyways I met with Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs. Actually the first time I asked a Sardar what religion he was, I didn't understand. I mean I had never heard of 'Sikh" before. So someone brought me a very general book about Sikhs. Now you have to remember that what was bothering me about my sets of beleifs was that other people were not being saved as they didn't know Jesus. So I opened up the book to chapter one and the first sentence said: There are no Hindus, there are no Muslims. WOW!!!!!! This simple but so profound revelation from Dhan Guru Nanak made such an impression on me: I mean I couldn't sleep for the next couple of weeks! I had the answer to what I was looking for. However it wasn't easy to review all the beliefs i had and upgrade them. I had many nightmares about going to hell and all that. I attended a samagam a while later and I could feel God's presence the same way I was feeling at church during worship time. It felt so good. I knew then that "No Hindus, No Muslims" was true! I was experiencing it!!! What matters is love for God, nothing else. My parents forbid me to attend any more samagam or attend Gurudwara. I was devastated. I got married a couple of month later to a Punjabi guy. I was naive and thought all Punjabis were going to samagam. I know have children and I try to take them whenever we can to Samagam which is very hard. Although at home, i read them Babaji stories and we do Naam Simran together. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I feel terrible that after so many years I haven't progress much. (Perhaps it is meant to kill my ego?) That sure is having an effect. I'm so blessed to have stumble upon this website, especially this thread. So inspiring. It'll keep me going... Thank you all of those of have shared their stories Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru
