  1. This is a little last minute, but please make an effort, for those living in and around Toronto, to attend the council meeting this evening! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - http://www.tapoban.org/phorum/read.php?f=1...97&t=100597 Author: Support for Singhnee! Date: 07-18-06 11:48 Vahiguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vahiguru Ji Ki Fateh! I got this email and felt I should post it here. I feel that sangataa should go attend these meetings to show this Gursikh panji that she has support from the Sikh community and also to show the council that the Sikhs (a visible minority) also require representation on the council. It would be great news to hear of her success in this election for the entire Sikh community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A young Singhnee is in the running to fill a vacancy for City Councillor in the City of Toronto, representing Ward 35 (Scarborough Southwest) and she is in need of your support! She and the 18 other candidates will present themselves before Scarborough Community Council next week. After the candidates make brief presentations to introduce their qualifications, the members of Scarborough Community Council will vote to recommend a candidate to Toronto City Council who, after deliberating over Scarborough Community Council’s recommendation, will go through the same process of hearing from candidates before voting to appoint one of the candidates to fill the vacancy. The successful candidate will subsequently fill the office of City Councillor for Ward 35 until the next municipal election in November. It would be powerfully influential for Sikhs to show their support and make an appearance at both council meetings: Wednesday, July 19th at 5:00pm in the Council Chamber at Scarborough Civic Centre (150 Borough Drive, Scarborough) AND Tuesday, July 25th at 5:00pm in the Council Chamber at Toronto City Hall (100 Queen Street West). Each meeting should take only an hour or two, but the results of seeing a young Sikh woman representing the community in municipal office would be well worth it! Please show your support by showing up!! <contact information removed for privacy> Thanks!
  2. I don't know about Boston, but it might be easier to find thread and a needle to sew your gaatra back together?

    Taking Amrit

    >if guru gobind singh jee was standing infront of me and asked for my head what would i say Who says Guru Gobind Singh isn't standing infront of you asking for your head? Every breath you take was given to you for one purpose. Each day you wake up, Guru Sahib is asking and waiting for you to fulfill that one purpose. "Gobind milan kee EH TERI BAREEYA!" (THIS is your chance to meet Akaal). Don't waste another moment! The original Punj Pyaarey didn't have to think if they were prepared or not. They had infinite love and devotion for their Satguru. When the call came, they didn't hesitate. They heard the call and they responded with their heads on their palms. Today we hardly even hear the call; how are we ever going to respond?? If you really don't feel "ready", you should address this feeling rather than sitting around waiting for "ready" to come to you; go to it yourself instead. Maybe make a list of what exactly is holding you back -- what are you concerns, your doubts, etc., and then take the time to address these issues. At the end of the day, no one can determine if you're ready or not. If you have the desire to dedicate your life to Gurmat and walk the Guru's path, then don't hesitate any longer because you never know when it'll be too late.
  4. Many people who have posted here have a LOT to learn about mental illness. Like most of you, I don't know the full story but I'd like to make a few comments: To Parwinder Singh: it isn't easy to get "help" and provide "proper care", and it isn't just a matter of medication and doctors, etc. Do you know how easy it is to screw up your medications, or have your medications screw YOU up even more? Many many many people with mental illnesses are mis-diagnosed anyways. And having proper care doesn't mean you're watched 24/7. Also, your statement about why they have kids if they can't look after them is so judgmental that it's actually quite ludicrous. Nothing can "excuse" the damage done to the saroop of Guru Sahib. But none of us can fairly judge or diagnose his mental health either.

    Advice Please!

You could contact the organizations directly and ask what kind of seva they are in need of. Then, depending on what types of seva you can offer, you can decide which one(s) you'd like to join.
  6. Bibi Nanaki was the first Sikh but we don't have any problem with males subsequently becoming Sikh. Why is it ia problem if the first Punj were males and subsequently, females take on the role?
  7. Just a small tip: If you call yourself a strict religious man and claim that caste is no bar, then stop identifying yourself as a "Ramgarhia Sikh" because no strict religious woman who likewise believes caste is no bar would respond to you. Good luck.
  8. They would obviously need some training to ensure that the counselling responses were in-line with Gurmat too, as providing Gurmat-based advice would be the objective
  9. I don't think anything of the sort exists in Canada. It would be a great resource to implement here though. Operating a crisis/help-line is not that difficult and wouldn't be too much trouble to set up if people were really interested. The easiest way to run it is how most rape crisis centres operate. You have calls going to a central number. The "operator" takes the person's number and contacts the first available "counsellor" to call that number back to speak with the person seeking help. Being qualified to "counsel" too isn't that difficult. You can recruit professional counsellors, but most centres that operate such helplines offer trainings geared to volunteers with no prior experience.
  10. Guest, encouraging the youth here to use this site to find themselves marriage partners is irresponsible and complete manmat. This site is great in that it allows the youth an opportunity to have an outlet through which to discuss issues of concern to them. However, if a bibi writes about the obstacles she faces in finding a singh, the solution isn't to tell singhs in similar situations to hook themselves up. The bibi's post was indicative of a greater problem; it isn't an individual nor a unique situation she is in. To view her post as a marriage ad is demeaning.

    Right Or Wrong?

It's a tough one -- you want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but you don't want to have to learn about them the hard way either. You should carefully consider where the warnings are coming from. Are they from trustworthy people who sincerely don't want you getting hurt? Either way, be vigilant. Trust your gut. Don't downplay or ignore signs that tell you things aren't right with the person in question.
  12. Any recipe will do. If it calls for eggs, simply replace the eggs with an equal amount of tablespoons of yogurt/daheen. If you don't have daheen, then use milk instead, but daheen works better. Here's a few recipes if you don't find others elsewhere: White Cake: - 3 C Flour - 1 + 1/2 C Sugar - 2 TB Baking Powder - 1 C Oil - add enough milk to make mixture thin ~ Mix ~ Pour into greased cake pan ~ Bake @ 350F until top is lightly browned/knife inserted in center comes out clean Chocolate Cake: - 1 + 1/2 C Flour - 1/3 C Carob Powder - 1/2 tsp Salt - 1 TB Baking Soda - 1 C Sugar - 1/2 C Oil - 1 C Cold Water ~ Mix all dry ingredients, then add oil and water ~ Bake @350 Banana Cake: - 3/4 C White Sugar - 3/4 C Brown Sugar - 1 tsp Baking Soda - 1/4 tsp Baking Powder - 1/2 tsp Salt - 1 tsp Cinnamon ~ Mix ~ Mash 3 (over-ripe) bananas into mixture - 1/2 C Milk - 1/4 C Oil ~ Mix into above mixture - 2 C Flour - 1/2 C nuts (optional but walnuts work nicely) ~ Mix flour and nuts thoroughly into mixture ~ Pour into greased pan, bake about 45 mins at 350F

  14. Saying "it's sensationalism" is dismissing it. I'm not dismissing it, but at the same time, I'm not saying it is completely the fault of the media's portrayal of women. It definitely plays a role, a BIG one. It is surely not the single cause though. As for women doing it of their own free will, they wouldn't do it if there wasn't the demand.
  15. Like usual, if you're looking for a Gurmat-based response, find any post in which Namstang refers to "fanatics" multiple times in a single sentence, and then do the exact opposite of what he advises. A sari isn't practical in any way at all. It's like walking around wrapped in a sheet. You've got to practically hold the damn thing together. And it's nearly impossible to avoid a bare midriff and backside. Moreover, you end up waddling around...can't even take a proper step. Staircases are a big no-no. Does a sari in ANY way at all resemble the appearance of a Singhni – woman waddling around, holding her clothing together? Obviously not. Show yourself some dignity and spare yourself the degradation. Realize who and what you are. A Singhni wouldn't rely on cultural appropriation to pilfer clothing from others. Guru Sahib has given you Gurmukhi Baana. It's much more elegant and much more becoming of a Singhni than a sheet being desperately held together. Don't pay any heed to the attempts of an unfortunate few males who are constantly threatened by Singhnis who look more like Sikhs than themselves. Let them wallow away in their preoccupation with third genders, etc.
  16. To "crazy", It isn't sensationalism. To make such a claim is pure ignorance. Violence against women isn't just depicted through pornographic magazines, it hits us even in regular advertising and all facets of popular media today. Women are always shown in compromising positions. That in itself is violence and leads to even more violence. A lot of rapists and even wife-beaters admit to being instigated in their acts through porn and even just regular television/music/videos and by "regular", I mean stuff that is very much accepted by the general public. I thought these guys are just looking for excuses or a scapegoat..."yeah, the media is to blame!", but it's no excuse, it's reality.
  17. Namastang, Heera Singh's claim is true. It isn't true only of India but many many other countries as well. There aren't stats to back up the claim simply because there are no real estimates of how many abortion clinics there are in existance in countries like India...many are "underground" so to speak.
  18. A lot of people suffer from a distorted self-image. Whether it is in regards to physical appearance or intelligence, etc, we're much harsher on ourselves than we should be. Having a negative body image (thinking you're "ugly") can lead to a lot of really serious problems down the road. Low self-esteem is a huge problem in itself. You can nip all this in the bud: realize that only those who see your inner beauty will see your outer beauty...and that includes yourself. As for intellect, don't compare yourself to others. What determines how "smart" someone is...a grade on a test, a mark on a paper?? This is nothing. This simply tells people how much you can memorize. There are a lot of better ways to learn. It is quite possible that you have a learning "disability". You can have this assessed through your school. Lots of times, it's simply a case of you being a visual learner in a lecture-based class or vice versa...something as simple as that. Your teachers/profs can make the appropriate adjustments and you'll probably see your marks rise. But again, marks mean something to those who view your transcripts but they mean nothing in real life. You don't get graded on what counts until much later..
  19. Source: www.faithfreedom.org Iran : A 17 year old girl is sentenced to death by hanging. 2006/01/08 Nazanin, 17, was sentenced to death by hanging for defending herself against three rapists. A young girl who defended herself and her chastity against three male assailants who intended to kidnap and rape her causing injury to one of them who later died in hospital was condemned to death by hanging in an Islamic court in Iran. Nazanin who has seen no more than 17 Springs, all of which under the tyrannical rule of the Mullahs is now facing execution for trying to defend herself and her honor. No where in the world and under no law self defense is considered to be a crime, but in the tyrannical mullacracy of Iran if a woman does not resist rape she will be stoned as adulterer and if she does she will be hanged. Nazanin, this young innocent girl, was assaulted by three criminal men in the West of Tehran while strolling with her niece in a park last March (2005). To defend herself she pulled out a knife and stabbed one of her assailants. The knife penetrated the ribs of her attacker who later died in the hospital. The attacks on women in Iran is so frequent that many are forced to carry a concealed weapon for self defense. Unfortunately the Islamic law does not even allow women that right. Despite the fact that she had been acting in self defense, as shown by the evidences presented and the testimony of eyewitnesses, Nazanin was sentenced to death by hanging. In the last court hearing she repeatedly said “I only defended myself and the honor of my family”. Her words fell of deaf ears and the all male jury who like their misogynist prophet thought it is outrageous for a woman to stand for her rights and defend her dignity and honor, swiftly ordered her execution. The travesty of justice in Islamic Republic of Iran is beyond description. Please send this news to all the newspapers big and small. Please do not allow this crime go unnoticed. This girl is an innocent flower in the hands of ferocious beasts. Do not allow them to nip her young life in the bud. Let us together provoke an outcry so loud that the ruling thugs in Iran can’t ignore. These criminals have no shame and don’t give a hoot to world outcry and condemnation. Nonetheless it is our duty as humans not to remain silent. Please ask your newspaper to report this story. Please write to your MP and urge the Parliament in your country to condemn the Islamic regime of Iran for their misogyny, human rights violations and crime against humanity. Please complain to the Office of High Commissioner of Human Rights tb-petitions@ohchr.org and ask them to pressure Iran to free Nazanin. You have to state your name, nationality and address if you want your petition be taken seriously.
  20. I think everyone runs into hurdles when they try to walk the path of Sikhi. But hurdles aren't made to stop you in your tracks, they're meant to be overcome. Remember, the path of Gurmat isn't just difficult, it's sharper than the edge of a sword and finer than a hair. It's not easy but nothing worth having is. Preseverence is key. Don't back down when you're feeling discouraged. The hurdles will keep coming but don't take them as road blocks and turn back. Seek strength in the Guru to help you continue along the journey.
  21. It is definiately all about power and control. If it was about appearance and sex, we could argue that only "attractive" people would be raped. As for sentencing, check out this enraging story from today's Toronto Star. A four-year sentence for child rape? Does that sound even remotely close to justice?

    Dastaar

Bhain Jee, my experience with wearing a dastaar started off the same as yours with my mother disapproving, etc. Even some of my friends made fun of me. But I wanted to wear a dastaar very badly, so despite all the ridicule etc, I resolved to wear one no matter what. The first time I wore a dastaar, I went to a ransubhaaee and made a grand appearance so that I'd be less likely to back out later on. If you're determined to wear a dastaar and you're committed to remaining steadfast regardless of what people/your family say, then just do it! Your family may still argue with you and try to make you change your mind, but stay strong! Eventually they should come to realise that you've made this decision for yourself and that you're not going to back down. Who knows...you may even influence their thinking and some day they too will don Guru Sahib's crown.
  23. Gurbani should be printed in a continuous line, in what is called Lareedaar, not with spaces as is the common form today. If you go to the Gurmat section of www.tapoban.org, there's some really good articles on this very issue ("The True Guru Is Lost" and "Guru Granth Sahib: Pad-ched Printing").
