  1. Hanji, this peice of work is from Bhai Veer Singh Ji's krit 'Sundri' and it is a fictional story however based on accounts of true historical happenings.
  2. This is a must read for those who want to contribute to this discussion: http://forums.waheguroo.com/index.ppa?act=...&hl=chaur+sahib
  3. haha.. whose posting Gurpreet Singh's picture???
  4. Finals are finally over for me.. Even though I didn't study much I still feel free of any tension! haha.. what about u guys? Any 4 pointers?
  5. Take a bottle of juice along with you. Only open it once you are there and when they ask you to eat, show them the bottle of juice and be like "oh I'm fine right now, thanks though :D"
  6. Sikh Soldier, as I stated above, Siropaos are very different from hazooreas. Siropaos used to be given to someone who had done some Panthik work, not like nowadays when anyone gets it by giving a little donation. Siropaos are meant to be worn as dastars or as kamarkasse whereas hazoorea is to be worn in the neck so u can have easy access to it while doing paath, kirtan or any other type of seva. Here's a recent article which is a bit related to siropao history: http://news.waheguroo.com/633Q6-12649-443Q...3-13732-39.html Now i'm not 100% sure if Mann is saying that siropo maryara is wrong alltogether. But as I said, in past they were not presented to 'anyone' but rather on something big. For ex., when Baba Jernail Singh Ji became Jathedaar of Damdami Taksal, a lot of Gurmukhs tied siropae over top of his dastar. And I think that's how they were presented in past. And now since many of us might be getting a siropao every month at our local Gurdwara Sahib, we have just started using them as hazooreas. Because we cannot really save all of them. And why would we want to save them? Getting one so often belittles the value of it. Imagine getting a siropao once in your life time! Wouldn't that mean something else to us?
  7. Such 'small' things shouldn't be labelled pro or anti-Gurmat as per my thinking... Hazoorea is a part of Gurmukhi baana that you should have with you as much as possible, and absolutely when doing seva of any kind and while sitting in taabea of Guru Granth Sahib. For reference refer to the book Se Kanheaiya by Baba Seva Singh Ji. Traditinally it was always white and even now most of Maha Purakhs/Jathedaars of different Jathebandis usually prefer white over other colors. I was once looking for pictures of Gursikhs online and couldn't find any pictures where anyone iswearing a kesri hazoorea.. the only exception was of those Gurmukhs from Nihung Singh Jathebandis.. I haven't come across any pictures of Taksali Singhs wearings hazooreas of other colors. The reason why hazooreas are preffered to be white is because you can easily tell if it's dirty on that color.. where as with other colors, it's usually hard to tell which is clean to be worn in taabea of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sometimes ppl mistake 'siropaao' with 'hazoorea'. Siroopaos can be of any color because they are not meant to be used as hazoorea but to be worn on one's head. Now if soemone does happen to wear a kesri hazoorea for one day.. s/he doesn't automatically become a tankhaaea as it is really a small thing if you think about it. But when that person is doing seva of Guru Granth Sahib ji, he or she should definetely try to have a white one on as traditionial ways are always encouraged  ... If not, I personally wouldn't consider it a kurehit.. 99.99% of the time I only wear white.. anyway, there were my own personal opinions..
  8. No.. actually I don't know of any Bibi from the Bay Area who wears a Sri Sahib in her Dastar, rather everyone that I happen to know wear proper Sri Sahibs in gatra.
  9. Ok, email me your address with the 'type' of kirtan that you prefer. AKJ, Ragi.. Katha??
  10. Kids of that age are usually given 'chula' instead of amrit. With chola you are bascially initiated into the Khalsa Panth, but however you are not held accountable for wearing all the 5 kakaars at all times, but this rehit including all others are adviced to be practised as much as possible because the next step after chula is to take Khanda baate ki pahul. And, there are many Kaurs who wear dastars and sri sahibs to schools in the bay area. There are many from your area who actually even post on this forum.. so if you are looking for any advice from them directly just keep an eye on Daughter of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Hadd-Torr Singh, Guru Ji Di Pyari, Ikonkar Kaur, and Gupat Singhni. You can also get to know more of the youth from the bay area by visiting the programs listed on www.ekhalsa.com
  11. Aussie Singho, do you have a dvd rom (simple read drive, not a burner) drive in ur computer? I'm asking because on a dvd u can burn 4.7 gigs of data and whereas on a mp3 cd you can only fit about 700 mb. So it will be much easier for anyone to send u a dvd full with kirtan tracks and then later on if you wish u can always put the stuff from the dvd to a normal cd with a cd burner, if you have one. So let us know if you will prefer dvd over a nirmal cd.
  12. It's good that you want to sponser a child and there's nothing wrong with an organization being Christian... They are doing seva in what way the find correct.. but one thing to think about is.. what is being done for the Sikh children who need financial support? You can find a lot of young Singhs/Kaurs in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh who have no support from any organization and even from other Sikhs from western countries. These kids have cannot afford to go to school because they can't pay for private school and public schools are sometimes strictly religion based.. and since most of them aren't getting any education it's hard for them to get jobs... there's nothing wrong with helping other religions but it's noted many a times that some organizations are only willing to help those ppl who show interest in a particular religion. If you want to help a child in Afrika, PLEASE go ahead but along with that also think about ur younger brothers and sisters.
  13. the first question is.. where do u live? I live in California and have been wearing a 9 inch sri sahib under my shirt for a couple of years without anyone noticing it.. and I know of some youth from Canada who even wear sri sahib on top of their shirts at school and at work.. so it depends on where u live.. and also.. what grade are you in?
  14. reminds me of the panktee... "mool laage tinee sukh paaya daale laage tinee janam gavaaea"
  15. can we buy just that edition of the megazine? If yes then where from?
  16. Ok.. my personal suggestion.. There are many shabads which you can read.. Salok M. 9, Kirtan Sohila Sahib and many Gutke have Rakhea De Shabad which are compiled right before Sohila Sahib. You should read them near your grandson so he too can listen, and even better, have your daughter do it too. Then do ardas for your grandson since he's too young to do it for himself but make sure he's with you while you are doing ardas and reading bani. And then after you are done try going to sleep and until you do fall asleep.. just do abhiyaas of mool mantar or gurmantar.
  17. Yahoo messenger would probably be the easiest for you.. if you have good resources you should be able to do it by installing shoutcast to your comp.. a 'little' lenghty process though..
  18. There is a person with the same name who has spoken at different stages in California and he aligns himself with Kala Afghana. Is this the same person?
  19. I use to.. when I was in Punjab
  20. I think we should find out that guy's email address and drop him an email wishing him good luck and congratulations?
  21. vaaheguru ji ka khalsa vaaheguru ji ki fateh The district is not Patiala.. Fatehgarh Sahib is a district itself. And yes, I agree to the Johr Mela issue. My mom's family happens to be from Fatehgarh Sahib district so I do know a lot about what happens there during these days. Until we were living in Punjab, we'd go visit our naanke every year during these days and stay there for these days. As a kid I never understood these things but I do remember how little respect people paid to the shaheedi of Chote Sahibzaade. Although everytime we went the Gurdwara Sahib would be full of sangatta, but outside in crowd, you could come across people picking pockets of other people. And many others could be seen doing "cher-char" with Bibiaa. There is no control over who gets to drive cars or busses in the crowd, as anyone with relatives with a high status job would get stickers for their car so they could drive around and see the 'mela' while sitting the car. And most people only visit it to shop around as people from all over India, and even from neighboring countries put up their stalls. Throughout the mela you would come across hundreds of big chandols or jhule (swings). There are motor/magical and many other types of shows and displays... Too much for the goofing around, there is some parchar done aswell! Yes, you could see Parkash Badal's party delivering speeches in one hall, and in the other adjacent hall or diwan, it would be the party of S. Simranjit Singh Mann. All the different political parties get to set up their diwans up where they get to attract sangat for their own views!!! That's about it fo r the big part.. in small parts you get to see small tents setup by Nihung Singhs where they sell the 'Dubae Deaa Ticktaa" or bhang and even shardaae... That's not all which needs to be worked on.. I can probably sit here for another hour trying to thank back and gather more memories.. Since my mom comes from a very religious family.. it was always deeply stressed that that we respect and remember the kurbani of our elder brothers... My grand parents would not sleep on bed and rather sleep on the cold floor just out of respect for the kurbani of Mata Gujar Kaur Ji and Chote Sahibzaade as they were goign through these things in those days.. They would always leave at amritvela for the diwans at the Gurdwara Sahib and come back late doing seva. I was always forced by my parents to stand in line so I could matha teak at all the different Gurdwara Sahibs there.. I never really understood it back then.. but now when I look back.. I do realize that that after spending years at this 'mela' I was atleast able to do something good... vaaheguru ji ka khalsa vaaheguru ji ki fateh
