  1. Guru Sahib says to us Gaveoh, Sunu, Paroh nit bani. Therefore they place singing first, followed by listening followed by reading. Therefore it is not a bad deed to listen to the bani but it would be very hard to stop the mind from wandering which is perhaps why you are doing other things whilst listening to the paath, which may be the cause of your current feelings; since you are not really listening to all of the paath. It is like watching TV whilst on the laptop, you do not focus entirely on whats on the TV it is background noise. What I would suggest is the following: Many people in your position listen to bani but follow the recording using a romanised Gutka. This way they are able to concentrate and can also move from romanised to gurmukhi. Many will disagree with me on this point but the 'paraas kala' of simran is very great and it needs to be balanced with other paath and seva. Therefore at this stage I would suggest you do Mool Mantar. Ideally obtain a mala which has 108 beads and do 6 mala a day - 648 mool mantar For amrit vela use your ego to wake you up. If you go to bed for at least 10.30pm your routine could then be: 3.30 am wake up - isnaan etc 4.15 am Mool Mantar 5.30 am aim to go to a local gurdwara With going to the gurdwara each morning you will begin to see some regular faces who will also notice you. Your ego will not want to be late since it wants to look good in front of these people. This has worked for numerous people. Finally do as much seva as you can in particular joria di seva (cleaning shoes) as you leave the gurdwara. Hopefully a combination of all of the above will help you on your path.
  2. I may be mistaken but it not Maharaja Bhupinder Singh who purchased the property for San Teja Singh to establish Shepherds Bush Gurdwara?
  3. Fateh Jee You need to have 2 times the amount of water and you don't start to heat the floor and butter together until the water has started to boil. Otherwise you are right there should be equal quantities of floor butter and sugar
  4. Some Singh's have encountered problems with their kirpan on Eurostar. The safest route is by car via the Euro-tunnel. Most of the Singh's who went to the smagam went by coach or car. The drive from Calais is about 3hrs so it is not too bad. I have done this journey numerous times and there has never been an issue.
  5. I am looking for an 11+ tutor for my twins to help with grammar school entry in Birmingham. Would welcome recommendations for tutors used by the sangat on this forum. Thanks
  6. Sorry to say this but as a standard letter this is awfully written. The grammar and syntax is poor and if you look at the following paragraph basic information is missing along with an inappropriate ending: Who were these assurances given by, to whom and when? The announcement does not create a major doubt about the assurance; it implies that the assurances were false to prevent a strong humanitarian voice. On numerous occasions over the last 4 years I have e-mailed the Sikh Federation to state they need to get more professional, get a diverse pool of individuals to support them and be more transparent with their activity. Instead I continually get a closed door. I would not class myself as one of them, but there are numerous highly educated, politically astute individuals out there, who want to be engaged but feel disfranchised. The other thread on placards for the rally demonstrate how poor we are in sending a strong signal. I am also disappointed that, despite raising it with numerous individuals, there will not be a separate rally for the Professor, or that the 5th June rally has not been changed to devote it's focus entirely to the case of the Professor. The people we will have before us on 5th June, leading the march and making the speeches have been there for the last 27 years, ask yourself what have the done or achieved over that time? Watching the Sikh Channels their only concern is to get as many youth at Hyde Park as possible to support their positions and boost their ego. You only need to ask where is the succession planning for Amrik Singh? There isn't one, since he is not prepared give up the limelight he has, despite the achievement record being very poor. Don't get me wrong I strongly believe that we must never forget 1984 and we need to ensure there is a strong voice. I would also not discourage anyone from showing their support on 5th June. BUT we need to start changing what we are doing in relation to 84 to give greater political and media interest; since we don't have it yet.
  7. I am amazed with some of the advice bring given on this thred re putting a kirpan in your dastar. I urge everyone not to a kirpan - no matter what the size - in your dastar. We are already having huge screening issues and in Italy there are numerous cases of dastars being removed. To date they have not found any item to support their searches. If even one Singh is found with a kirpan in their dastar it will be a disaster for the whole panth. As no food or drink whilst you are on the plane with your kirpan off, this is not a big deal and something my Singnia and I have been doing for the last 12 years with Guru Sahibs Kirpa. _Guest_ has described very well what you should do. Those who disagree with this advice, that is your prerogative; However those who are attempting to keep the bachan given to them by the Panj Pyare should have full barosi in Guru Sahib and not worry.
  8. When going to meet a Sant you should take fruit with you to give to them. There is a sakhi that when Sant Puran Singh came to the UK the only person to bring them fruit was Bhai Narung Singh and this was the reason they both became very close. The above is based on actual bachan from a Sant.
  9. At the end of the day we all spend money on cloths, which ultimately go out of fashion or just wear out and end up in the bin. If your old enough and you buy a car you loose plenty of money on it daily due to depreciation. So even if you donate £100 (less than the cost of your designer jeans) or £20 (what you pay monthly for your mobile phone bill) you will have supported in giving the Academy a new lease of life. Even if the Academy gets into problems again your initial donation will not have gone to waste since so many additional youngsters would have benefited over that time. Just as when their is a world crisis such as the floods in Pakistan you don't ask what the country is going to do to stop it happening again you donate money in the hope that they will develop the infrastructure, since the immediate need is to help those in need. The Academy is doing good work I sense they have become victims of the banking crisis like so many other businesses who have had terms of their loan changed. Since I am sure the bank is treating the Academy as a business. Therefore to get a loan of over £1m and to have kept abreast of repayments for so many years must justify that there is a business plan in place. Also lets not forget they paid £150k of the sum requested before coming to the wider sangant. The bottom line is that we are not giving our own money but the money Guru Sahib has given us, all we need to do is open our hearts a little bit. As so many have said to you if you have questions phone the Sevadaar or go and visit them rather than posting negativity on this forum. The rest of the sangant I would urge you that rather than going out for a Pizza give that £10 to the Academy or delay getting your new computer game and give the £30 to the Academy. Every little does truely help.
  10. It would be useful if as well as providing a formal statement that they provide their bank account details so that funds can be transferred electronically. All it requires is 150 people to donate £1,000 each. I am sure that there there are more than that number of graduate Gursikhs in the UK who can dip into their Daswand/savings. If there is a real need and it is verified by the Academy, i for one will pledge £1,000 and will transfer it as soon as I receive further information.

Sangrad Jan 14 Feb 13 March 14 April 14 May 15 June 15 July 16 Aug 17 Sep 17 Oct 17 Nov 16 Dec 16 I hope this thread does not start yet another mindless debate on the merits of the Nanakshai Calendar. The migration by the Akal Takhat back to Bikrami dates for the Gurpurb which are celebrated the most is an indication of the lack of credibility the calendar has. Also with virtually all Western Guru Ghar celebrating the start of the Christian New Year this evening further demonstrates that they themselves do not align themselves fully to the Nankshai Calendar. Since the New Year for Sikhs starts on 14th March each year, hence why the annual Calendar is launched in March each year by the Akal Takhat.
  13. I think the comment on the website re Christians definitely applies to us Sikhs. Therefore perhaps we need to look into our actions and compare those to the actions Guru Sahib required from us.
  14. As plenty of people say they can do what they like........which is true. However if they have given their head truly to Guru Sahib then for an Amritdhari Gursikh there is no such thing as a mehndi function, or maiyha or jago! An amritdhari should not be applying nehndi under any circumstance. However many will tell you it is fine, there are no problems with it............since we need to modenise Sikhi. HOWEVER we are not modernising Sikhi but diluting it. Just because your maan wants to do something you should not be justifying it under Sikhi..............just get on and do it but don't try to prove it is acceptable in Sikhi. As Guru Sahib says mehalaa 1 || First Mehla: sabhae ka(n)th mehaeleeaa sagaleeaa karehi seegaar || All are brides of the Husband Lord; all decorate themselves for Him. ganath ganaavan aaeeaa soohaa vaes vikaar || But when the time comes to settle their accounts, their red robes are corrupt. paakha(n)dd praem n paaeeai khottaa paaj khuaar ||1|| His Love is not obtained through hypocrisy. 15. _:kaur:_ you raise a very valid point, however as is obvious from those who choose to dress as you described there is no shame that they are disrespecting our father Guru Gobind Singh. WHY.......because they are full of ego and think that they can and should modernise Sikhi. Also since they do what they do on public that they are not scared of anyone. HOWEVER..........as Guru Sahib says Jhasa Bijey Thesa Hi Kai. If they are in the wrong they will soon learn. I would rather not risk it and try to follow purtan asool that Guru Sahib have given us. As to those girls who wanna be modern and cool I am sure that they def do not have a paka Amrit Vela and thier nitnem in very minimal. If it wasn't why would they have no shame????? I look forward to the backlash which will be unleashed upon me.
  16. Interesting that your poster states unity is our strength...................................however you decided to establish yet another youth body to cause disharmony rather than to work with those already present. Hope you are enjoying the 'kusi' you have created for yourself!!!!
  17. Many have concerns about Daljit Singh's activities, the video confirms them. It is very sad but I am not surprised. It does confirm why over the past 5 years he has used Baba Sang Gurdwara to promote Nang activity and encouraged Guru Sahib to be disrespected.
  18. This is very good news in-deed. Can I please suggest that those who wrote to their MPs send up a follow up letter. I emailed the below this morning, if others want to cut and paste it: As you will be aware due to the Secretary of State for Transport having delayed the implementation of hand searching the Dastaar in UK airports, the lobby arranged yesterday was postponed at the the last minute. I am very encouraged that Rt Hon Phillip Hammond MP and his ministers are going to work with Sikh organizations to arrive at a fairer outcome, however I would be grateful for your continual lobbying of the Secretary of State for Transport plus the raising of appropriate questions in the House to ensure that this matter remains as a high priority item on the coalition Governments agenda. I would also be grateful if you could raise this matter with your colleagues who are MEPs to ensure that our concerns are also aired in Europe. Kind regards
  19. Shastr you are completely mistaken in your statement above. With the replies which have been posted it shows that very few people on this forum have even completed a sehj paath, since no-one has picked up this very simple point In gurbani at numerous places you get mool mantar from Ik Onkar to Gurparshad repeated with no changes at all. I would urge you all to read Gurbani instead of debating if Sri Chand quoted a salok in Sukhmani Sahib or not, since the answer to the debate is not going to change anything. If you believe he did good for you, if you believe he did not good for you too.
  20. As many know Bhai Phaldeep Singh Ji has been doing an excellent job in coordinating Sanjhae Smagam in the UK. Well done on others trying to do the same, however rather than asking for names of kirtani should the Jathedar/man sevaak of the Jathebandi not be approached to arrange such an event? To gain support should they not be the ones who coordinate their kirtani? On another note though should are all kirtan programmes not Sanjha programmes? By stating only certain programmes are Sanjha were certain jathebandi are represented can create a divide and rule culture.
  21. Criticism of death ride safety 7:20am Friday 25th July 2008 By Alex Hayes » THE funeral of a local cyclist who died after being knocked off his bike during a charity ride took place yesterday. Mohammed Abdullah Shah, 52, from West Ealing, was taking part in the annual Birmingham to London cycle organised by Sikh Arts and Cultural Association (SACA), when he was hit by the BMW 3 series on a slip road onto the A5 in Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire on Saturday afternoon. He was airlifted to hospital in Oxford but died a short time later. A post mortem carried out on Tuesday revealed he died of multiple injuries. Now some of the other 320 riders taking part in the ride, which has been running for 19 years, have slammed organisers for a lack of safety measures. One rider, who did not want to be named, said she would not take part in the event again because it was unsafe. She said: “I’ve taken part in a number of charity rides over the years and this one just felt really unsafe. At the safety briefing on the first morning, people couldn’t get into the room because it was too small. They showed us signs which were supposed to be along the route, but I didn’t see a single one. “Some of the riders were so inexperienced. At one point, a young girl was trying to start off at some traffic lights when she wobbled and fell in the road in front of a car, which was luckily going slowly and stopped before it hit her. “They should have had marshalls on the slip roads patrolling the event and it didn’t seem like they had told the authorities in the areas we were passing through about the ride before it happened. “Some of the stewards were just young teenagers themselves and didn’t seem aware of the Highway Code.” Organisers have also been criticised for not telling riders there had been a fatality. The rider continued: “When we got to Luton on Saturday night a couple of competent riders said they were going home. “That made me worry and I asked one of the organisers what had happened. He told me the man was not badly injured. “Then, when we got into Southall we had a big Mela [festival] which, had I known what had happened, I would not have gone to.” Harmi Kaler, a ride organiser, said: “The main part of the home stretch is a parade through Southall Broadway, with lots of music and fundraising, but we decided to cancel the music there as a mark of respect. “We were asked by police not to tell anyone he was dead, as they had to inform his family and they did not want them to hear before they could tell them.” Mr Kaler also said there were ambulances travelling with the group and that an ambulance crew got to Mr Shah within 30 seconds of the incident, but his injuries were too severe for them to save him. He said: “Safety is one of the most important things to us and there was no negligence on our part. We have never had a serious accident in the 19 years the event has been running. “The application packs clearly state it is up to the rider to know the Highway Code and take necessary safety precautions – and this includes wearing a helmet. We also can’t control the speed people drive at. “He [Mr Shah] had four work colleagues with him, and they told us he was enjoying the ride and did not have any problems with it.” SACA is offering counselling to anybody on the ride effected by Mr Shah’s death. An inquest into the death was opened and adjourned at Milton Keynes on Wednesday, and a police investigation is still ongoing to establish the cause of the crash. http://www.ealingtimes.co.uk/news/localnew...th_ride_safety/

    Eyebrows

Some excellent points have been made in numerous posts but as ever these points are being drowned out or rediculed by those who do not want to see the panth in charidkala and want singhnia to conform to the 21st century social norms. I firmly support those posters who have stated that something needs to be done since it does and sooner rather than later. This is a disease spreading in the youth and what they do not realize is that once they convince their man(u) that it is ok to wax/laser/thread their 'tosh' that it soon becomes ok to do something about their 'sideburns' then their arms then their legs etc etc. All those people undertaking this activity are then supporting others to do it and those so called singh who also want to oogle bibia are of course promoting it as well since they want a g/f without any hair and would prefer it if they wore revealing tight fitting clothes. What amazes me are these girls are happy to dress inappropriately to show off their non-hairy body and their slim frame from going to the gym. They know themselves why they are doing these things i don't need to spell it out but it aint for the benefit of their sikhi or Guru Sahib. It is amazing that the few youth parcharak that are out there running up and down the county find it easy to recount stories of shaeed and how we should keep our amritvela BUT do not publicly address this issue. Perhaps because they too want to keep their options open and may want to get together with someone who is removing her hair. You may think I am being a bit far fetched but what other reason is there? One particular parcharak has his talks all over the internet where you can hear him literally shouting at the sangat but yet even he will not address this issue. It is easy to say go and speak to the individuals direct, I've tried they don't want to listen. Until we all reach a point of wanting the panth in charidkala and are prepared to accept that certain actions are against sikhi rather than trying to defend them we will continue to travel a path which lead us away from our Guru. It is time to wake up and see the damage occurring around us.
  23. Before you complain make sure you listen to the show first so that you have all the facts. You can hear it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml#f select File on 4. You can also download it.
  24. Thank you AkalPurakhDiFauj, for your helpful comments I will keep my boogies to my self from now on! I aknowldge the quotes you have given but my confusion stems from the one point taht if that is his stand why does he socially mix with them and attend their functions to this day? Tanu I have not slandered Bhai Sukha Singh at any point if I have please send the the relevant quotes. Again I would ask you to calm down and stop jumping around! To answer your questions: - I have no affiliation with the UK men in blue, may parents do know some of their parents via friendships and as such i been to some of the weddings and family programmes they have held at ALL of which I have seen Bhai Sukhs Singh. The last one of these events was back in November 2007. The reason I went to that one was to see if as you are stating he had walked away from them - I am not pointing fingers just asking for clarification on a very important point, you are sat in the USA, therefore you have no idea of the damage the UK men in blue have done within the youth over the last 6 years in the UK. Their parchar also started off as Panthic Unity, love for all etc etc - as far as I was concerned this topic was over, since I realised I was not going to get a response. I respond to Bhujangi's post since he portrayed he had addressed all of the concerns and I was confused as to why he too did not mention the 'UK men in blue'. It is interesting as to how he as not responded at all to my request. Mods you do not need to worry since I am not planning to post any thing further on this topic unless initiated by another member or direct questions are asked of me.
  25. Tanu, thank you for the response but why is everyone ignoring the question. I have not asked about Bhai Sukha Singh's affiliation with Nidaar Singh at any point. The question which I am failing to get a decent response to is below. I am at this stage also not expecting a response since I know one will never be forthcoming. I do not need to ask Bhai Sukha Singh since I have seen him at their functions, family events and social events. Therefore even though you may choose to ignore it there is an affiliation with the UK men in blue whose beliefs are contrary to those you state Bhai Sukha Singh upholds. Hence why I am very confused as to how one can hold very honorable beliefs as outlined eloquently above but 'hang around with' people whose belief is complete opposite to those beliefs. I am sure that those who go to the West Mids programme next month will see Bhai Sukha Singh with these UK men in blue.
