BBC News - Met appeals to London Muslims

(Sikhs mentioned at the end)

The UK's Muslim community must help London's police in the fight against terrorism, the Met Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair has said.

Speaking at a the Minhaj-ul-Quran Mosque in Forest Gate, East London, he appealed to worshippers: "I need you".

"We have got nearly 1m Muslims in London, 1.6 in the UK," he said.

"We've only got 300 Muslim police officers in London - that's not good enough. I need your mothers, fathers, sons and daughters."

"We must seize this moment, this weekend, next week.

"We have to seize a moment in which the Muslim community in Britain changes from your position of shock and disbelief into active engagement in counter-terrorism."

The attacks were not anything to do with Islam, he said, but were done in the name of Islam "and that puts the responsibility on all of us".

This is the worst nightmare that can happen to the British Muslim community

Sir Ian Blair

"There's nothing wrong with being a fundamentalist Muslim, Jew or Christian, the key issue is the slide into extremism," he said.

He compared the "perversion of the virtues of Islam" behind the London "atrocities" to anti-abortionists in America who shoot doctors.

"For you I know this is the worst nightmare that can happen to the British Muslim community," he said.

"But the police service is engaged with your leaders to reach out to you."

It was not the police or intelligence services that would defeat terrorism, he said, but communities.

Police limits

On taking office earlier this year, he said he changed the Met Police logo to "Working together for a safer London" because the police and community could only succeed together.

We have had numerous reports of race hate crimes targeting Sikh taxi drivers, bus drivers and even Tube workers

Jagtar Singh

Sikh Federation (UK)

That was borne out in the past when police began to work with the Afro-Caribbean community to solve Yardie murders.

"You cannot let the men of violence win," he told them.

"We know only four people did this. I can't prevent four people attacking a tube system that carries 3m people a day.

"I can't do it - you might be able to do it; collectively London can do it because we are the most diverse city on the planet."

Sir Blair went on to visit a Sikh temple in Manor Park, also in East London, were he was told of the community's concerns following the London attacks.

'Race hate crimes'

Jagtar Singh, of the political party Sikh Federation (UK), said: "Sir Ian spoke to us to give us reassurance following the attacks on Sikhs after last Thursday's terrorist attacks."

Mr Singh said Sikhs were "the largest and most visible" ethnic minority in London, which put them "at the greatest risk of race hate crimes".

At the meeting he presented Sir Ian with a memorandum outlining the concerns of the Sikh community in the UK.

Mr Singh said attacks against Sikhs were "spreading and increasing in seriousness", including a knife attack reported in Ireland.

"We have had numerous reports of race hate crimes targeting Sikh taxi drivers, bus drivers and even tube workers that interact with the public in providing essential services," he said.

He added that Sir Ian was also presented with a 'kirpan', a 3ft sword symbolising justice.

Mayor and police chief invite public confidence

Tuesday 19 July 2005

Newham’s Mayor Sir Robin Wales accompanied Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair on visits to meet Muslim and Sikh faith leaders and worshippers in Forest Gate and Manor Park on Friday.

The visits took place at the Minhaj-ul-Quran mosque in Romford Road and the Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar temple in Rosebery Avenue.

They were part of a series of visits the Commissioner made to places of worship of different faith groups across the capital to reassure people and increase public confidence in the wake of the central London bombings last week.

Sir Robin said: “We all share the outrage at the terrorist attacks. Newham is a community with a strong cultural diversity and we respect the life and dignity of all peoples. We must stand united against anyone that would seek to exact revenge or reprisal against innocent people.

“Newham Council wants all members of our community to be reassured that harassment of any form will not be tolerated. We will continue to work with the police and other partner agencies to bring confidence, particularly in communities where people may feel vulnerable at this time.”

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
