Subway Yes Or No

gurfathe!

i am typing this email for the benefit of amradhari gursikhs who eat from subway. there has been a lot of confusion regarding what amradharis can and cannot eat from there. after a number of emails (and corespondences) i have confirmed the following information.

-this only applies to english sangat (not sure about ireland, wales, scotland and worldwide brances).

-i asked for alcohol, egg, fish and animal flesh, which was as presise as i could be. so this information is 99% amradhari frendly (i say this because there is still a chance they use different words or E numbers for some of there products)

-from the breads u cannot eat the one with a layer of cheese on it (cheese toasty type!), as it contains animal rennet. but can have all the others.

-the burger they use for there veggie subs IS made using EGG!

-some of the sauces/garnashes they use are doddgy, so my advice would be leave these all together

-the triangle cheese is OK from the selection...HOWEVER, the one which they sprinkle on is made using animal rennet!

when contacting the food specialist of subway, i was told that vegetarians are not a group they highly prioritise catering for. it is by default rather than design they are able to consume some of the sunway products. this is why on there site there is not substantial information on egg, fish, meat, etc. however saying that they did say that they were looking into this for the future.

-despite poular belief, they do not ALWAYS change there gloves when preparing a new sandwich, so the level of soothcum may not be up to evry amradhari's standards.

-i myself do not eat from there, this email has been provided purely as seva for those who choose to. i am not endorsing or condeming eating from such places, but i do say that we should as amradharis try and maintain some reht when eating from outside (i know its difficult for those of us who wrk, go to uni, etc) but we need to be careful because we are such a small group (compared to vegans, muslims, koshr, etc) especially in regards to E numbers.

i think iv said enuff now, but should u need more info, i shall gladly share what i have, so just email me.

p.s could some one please email this to the sikh forums and sikhgroups (boss, etc)

gurfathe!

So do they use fertilised eggs ? If not the veggie thing is ok unless you are an extremely orthodox brahmin.

If anyone is concerned about sutchem they would not eat from outside anyway.

Get yourself a small holding, grow your own wheat, make bread ar roti and prepare your own lunch. If you are going to eat from outside them everything is OK. Eat what you want. People think that those big bags of atta they buy are good. Have you ever seen what people do in an atta mill ?

I know someone who used to work in a bakery and he told me that people there never used to wash their hands after going to he toilet, one chap used to make a point of picking his nose whilst working. So do not touch any kind of bread.

If anyone tell you off for eating anda bread tell them to go read the Akal Takht Hukumnama issued in 1980 and to learn about unfertislised eggs.

I do not eat meat but it does not bother me and I do not take the moral high ground when it comes to meat eating. Do as you wish. It is not a no no to eat meat in Sikhi. If you are happy drinking milk then you should not have a problem with eggs etc. They are both animal products afterall.

Just the type of reply I expected. An egg does not hurt a hen and an unfertilised egg will not hatch into anything. The eggs in supermarkets and usually unfertilised. Just make sure they are free range if you are worried about cruelty.

Have you asked a cow how it feels to walk around with the biggest udders you have ever seen ?

After calving most dairy cows are impregnated again after only 2/3 months. Lactation can be for close to 300 days so a cow could be pregnant and lactating for 210 days. Disgusting hey ?

Intensive breeding programs coupled with special foods means that cows produce upto 10 times more milk than a calf requires (calfs do not get this milk anyway). As a result of the emphasis on breeding high yielding cows they are prone to diseases like mastitis, lameness (due to having large udders as I mentioned above), ruminal acidosis, ketosis and parturient hypocalcaemia which casues heart problems.

So please stop pretending that milk is not harmful to cows and you are doing cows a favour by buying the milk. Just remember you are supporting the dairy industry which baltantly abuses animals for economic profit. Of cause I apologise if you do not buy dairy milk and have your own cow which you look after properly.

also to let the sangat know that the spicy bean burger at burger king contains egg. so does the maccies veggie grill burger, but th original veggie burger that maccies does is ok (i think grin.gif )

Once again are they unfertilised eggs ?

Also how do you know they keep sutchem when handling the food. I have never seen anyone in maccies keeping sutchem. They touch meat products and veggie ones with the same hands. I bet they even fry the veggie stuff in the same oil as the meat products.

If you are particular about sutchem and being a veggie then dont eat out. But if you are going to eat out then stop pretending you are sticking to sutchem by only eating an original veggie burger.

Its not too hard to cook your own food. Plus who wants to eat that $hit they make in them fast food places. Over the years they have found all sorts of rubbish in the burgers these places sell, this includes rats tails in burgers and even excrement in burgers. So unless you like eating excrement I would not go near these fast food places.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
