Shaheedi Of Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Recommended Posts

When Guru Arjan Dev Ji was compiling Guru Granth Sahib Ji – then known as Ad(i) Granth – It was well known that not only the Gurus’ Banis were included, but various Bhagats and Saints of different religions’ Bani were also included.

Hearing this, four bhramins, who claimed themselves to be saints, went to Guru Arjan Dev Ji and asked, “You are including Hindu Saints’ Bani, no matter what caste they are. We are also saints, can you include our Bani too?”

Guru Ji replied “Ofcourse, if its according to Gurmat, I will. Tell me your poems one by one so I can check”

The First Bhramin, named Kaana said his poem. “I am the Vedas, I am the Puranas. I am God. I am God!”

Guru Ji commented “This poem is full of Hankar. We included Saints such as Baba Kabir Ji saying:

ਕਬੀਰ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਹੂਆ ਮੁਝ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਾ ਨ ਹੂੰ ॥

Kabeer, repeating, ""You, You"", I have become like You. Nothing of me remains in myself.

How can I include your Bani with that?”

The second Bhramin, named Chujoo, recited his poem “What is the point in living now. Instead of going through such pains of the world, we were better off dying as soon as we were born!”

Guru Ji then said “But Gurbani says life is precious. We go through 84 lakh lifetimes to obtain this one chance to meet the lord.

You have been blessed with this human body. This is your chance to meet the Lord of the Universe.”

The third Bhramin tried his luck, “Women are an evil race, even if you look at a picture of them your soul will be blackened!”

Guru Ji replied, “Women in Gurbani, are given such a high status. How can I include that poem when Gurbani has tuks like:

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥

Why call the female bad? From her, kings are born!

Women are not an evil race, but yes, we should control our Kaam for them. We should control our eyes, and see other’s women as mothers, sisters or daughters.”

When Guru Ji asked the fourth one, Shah Sehn, he went quiet and thought “It’s better if I don’t speak, he’ll just criticise me too.”

Guru Ji said “Don’t be afraid, you should tell me what you have written”

So he recited his poem “It’s best to keep quiet”

Guru Ji then said “

By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.

We should talk openly with Gurmukhs. Only with Manmukhs you should remain quiet.

Where you are bound to lose by speaking, there, you ought to remain silent.”

The Bhramins were furious at this insult, as even the Shudra (low caste) Saints’ writings are included in the Ad(i) Granth. Kaana tried to take revenge, but on his way to Jehangir he died. The other three were successful in filling Jehangir’s ears with more lies.

-----

Birbal was Akbar’s most faithful companion. Wherever you hear the name Akbar, you hear Birbal. Although Birbal tried to turn Akbar against the Guru Ghar, Akbar didn’t. When Akbar died, his son, Jehangir became emporer. Balbir was Jehangir’s advisor as a result, and told him to either try to get rid of Sikhi – the “False religion” that are converting Hindus and Muslims, or to add an Islamic twist to it, to increase the prachaar of Islam across Hindustan.

Taking his Advice, Jehangir visited Guru Arjan Dev Ji and noticed the amount of offerings he had received. Observing this, he said to Guru Ji, “You receive such high amounts of offerings, you should tax your offerings” And Guru Ji replied “The honest earnings of Guru Ji’s Sikhs will not be used to fill up the treasure of a tyrant. They will only be used to provide the costs for Guru Ka Langar.”

Remaining calm, Jehangir moved onto the main point “I see you are compiling a Dharmic Granth, with both Hindus’ and Muslims’ writings. Can you include praises of Hazzrat Mohammed (the prophet)?”

Guru Ji replied “Firstly, I will never praise a human being. I shall only praise the One God. I always have been. Secondly, who am I to write Bani?

As the Word of the Forgiving Lord comes to me, so do I express it, O Lalo.”

Having no choice, Jehangir returned. He thought – I tried to add an Islamic twist to Sikhi, but failed. So now, it is time to destroy Sikhi itself…

    • Definitely the Guru Sahibs would be a heavier Scriptures to handle. Dasam Granth is more towards Bir Rass, Guru Gobind Singh showed his Greatness (of course, they would never say this) by separating his own Baania.  And the BIGGEST test of all?? Do we try and read Dasam Granth, Understand n show respect like we do to SGGS? Or... Do we QUESTION it? Guru Gobind Singh Ji is testing us.
    • My wife will be going for an MRI scan next week but her Kara won’t physically come off.  Is there any way the mri scan can be done with the Kara still on?  The alternative is we will have to try to saw it off before the scan.
    • was researching this and came back to this thread. Also found an older thread:
    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
