Press Statement of the Akali Dal (Amritsar) dated 03 November 2006

The incident that occurred at Kathunangal on the 25th of October 2006, during the Shatabdi of Baba Budha ji was a blatant attempt to physically eliminate the President and members of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had stated that the party would take part in the celebrations to mark the quintcentenary of the venerable Baba Budhaji. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht had issued an invitation to the entire Sikh Panth to ensure that the celebrations were a success. The SGPC as the organizer of these celebration was duty bound as per its constitutional charter to ensure that the celebrations were open to every Sikh.

On the other hand Shri Prakash Badal and the Badal Akali Dal had publicly stated that they would not allow the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) to be a part of the celebrations. Badal Akali Dal had issued threats prior to the celebrations in public forums from Shri Parkash Badal, Avtar Singh, President SGPC, Shri Sucha Langah and others.

While these threats were issued we received reports that the Badal Dal was making preparations at the site of the celebrations to stock pile arms. The Pandal where the celebrations were to take place was made into a fortress using metal sheets. The preparatory activities of the Badal Akali Dal to launch a murderous attack were apparent to us for a long time. In fact they were hard to miss given the scale at which they were engaged in. The Pandal was set up like a fortress, all the goonda elements of the Badal Dal, including the SOI, Youth Akali Dal, All India Sikh Student Federation and members of the Badal Akali Dal already under the scrutiny of the State for corruption, rape, trafficking, murder and the SGPC task force were notified to arms.

If the scale and nature of the preparations was apparent to us, we are sure that the intelligence agencies with their obsessive monitoring of Sikh political and religious activities would also be aware of the situation. It is even more certain that given the past occurrences at the Shatabdi’s in the Amritsar/Majithia area the local police chief would be monitoring the events at Kathunangal.

On the 25th morning, the day of the Shatabdi, the SP Majithia came to see Pradhan, Sardar Simranjit Singh Mann at the circuit house in Amritsar. He asked if the party was going to go to the Shatabdi celebrations. Pradhan Sahib said that it was our duty to do so and added that we would go unarmed and in peaceful manner. In return Pradhan Sahib asked the SP whether the police had ensured that there were no arms with the Badals and whether they had ensured that the events would remain peaceful. The SP said that if the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) was attending in a peaceful manner then the police had no objection to the party attending the Shatabdi, he also assured Pradhan Sahib that the SSP Majithia, Shri Gautam Cheema , IPS, had ensured that there was no problem in our attending the Shatabdi.

En route to Kathunangal from Amritsar the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) jathas were stopped by the Majithia police a kilometer away from our gathering point at the Dana Mandi near the old police station. Our jathas were scrutinized for any lathis, kirpans and other weapons, which were confiscated. We marched to and gathered at the old Kathunangal police station where Pradhan Sahib addressed the crowd. Pradhan Sahib stated that we were here to take part in the celebrations as humble Sikhs going to their Guru Ghar and that we were to march barefoot to the Pandal reciting the name of Waheguru.

Our Jatha left for the Pandal, which was a kilometer away from our gathering, barefoot and reciting Waheguru. When the jatha reached a police checkpoint to the side entrance of the Pandal the DSP on duty at the checkpoint did not allow the jatha in from there. We were made to walk further and enter the Pandal from the Gurudwara Sahib entrance. As we approached the Gurudwara Sahib we noticed another police Naka which had placed three Tata Sumo’s between the outside wall of the Gurudwara Sahib and the entrance to the Pandal. This narrowed the front of our Jatha As we passed the Gurudwara Sahib we noticed that there were a lot of youngsters up on the roof of the Gurudwara Sahib.

As we turned the corner around the Sumo’s to go to the Pandal we were shocked to see thousands of Lathi and Kirpan bearing goondas standing at the front gate of the Pandal. These goondas came charging out brandishing Lathis, large Bamboo’s and naked Kirpans and at once fell upon the leaders of our jatha, which included S. Simranjit Singh Mann. Despite our initial attempts to placate the Badal Dal goonda’s by assuring them of our right to enter the SGPC Pandal that housed the Guru Granth Sahib, the goonda’s launched an attack laced with Lathi’s and naked Kirpans from the front, and the youth on the Gurudwara Sahib roof top hurled bricks down on the jatha. All this time the police were a silent spectators.

Despite the initial rush of the Badal Dal’s goonda’s and our restraint in dealing with their onslaught, we were able to push the initial attempt to attack back. As there was a lull in the Badal Dal’s onslaught I came forward and attempted to ask the Badals not to indulge in their murderous attack. At this time about four or five shots were fired by the Badal Dalia’s. Seeing the shooting our jatha was taken aback and the Badalia’s got a second wind to launch another unrestrained attack of lathis and Kirpans along with stones from atop the Gurudwara Sahib and in the SGPC Pandal. During this attack our leaders fell and most of our jathebandi was injured. The police did not intervene at this point.

Pradhan Sahib had sat down in protest at his not being allowed in and our jathebandi bodily surrounded him while the Badalia’s murderously attacked them. It was during this point that the police intervened by putting Sardar Simranjit Singh in one of the police Tata Sumo’s and taking him back to the old police station, where we regrouped did an ardas and dispersed for Amritsar.

At this press conference we wish to point out that :

• There was sufficient information available about the build up of the Badal Dal’s weapons and goonda force in the SGPC pandal.

• The Punjab Police did not prevent this build up.

• The Punjab Police ensured that the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had no means of defence.

• The route taken by the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) was directed by the police towards a waiting force of armed goonda’s collected by the Badal Akali Dal.

• That even though there was a murderous pre-mediated attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), no action has been taken by the Punjab Police.

We wish to point out to the press that last year when the Sikh Panth and specifically the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had decided to remember the massacre of the Sikhs during the Ghallughara Divas programmes, passed off peacefully and did not lead to any attacks on any body, Prakash Badal and the SGPC had simply complained to the current Congress government in Punjab and Delhi, leading to the arrest and incarceration of our leader for six months. The cases registered against party members in those days by the administration are still carrying on in the courts.

We also wish to point out that in the genocide of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984 the Delhi police had taken away the arms of the Sikhs residing in Tirlokhpuri Mohalla (lathis’s and Kirpan’s) who had stood upto an organized attack on them, by promising that the police was responsible for their security. The police had later allowed Congress goondas to roam from house to house in Tirlokpuri Mohalla in order to kill Sikhs. This Congress government is doing the same, by setting the corrupt Badalia’s on the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar).

It is shows the complicity of the Akali Dal Badal and the Congress that no cases or action is being taken now.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
