Avtar Singh Makkar re-elected SGPC chief

Amritsar, Nov 25: Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal`s Shiromani Akali Dal retained control of the powerful Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) as incumbent Avtar Singh Makkar was on Saturday re-elected its president with an overwhelming majority.

Makkar, an aide of Badal, defeated Panthic Morcha nominee Gurwinder Singh Shampura by a margin of 104 votes. Makkar secured 139 votes against 35 polled in favour of Shampura.

The SGPC General House comprises of 190 members, including the five Sikh high priests who do not have voting rights. Four members had died leaving an effective voter strength of 181. Six members were absent and one vote was cancelled.

Badal group nominees Raghujit Singh, Kewal Singh Badal and Sukhdev Singh won as senior vice president, junior vice president and general secretary respectively.

Executive committee members elected today were: Daya Singh, Suba Singh, Baba Tek Singh Dhanoula, Santokh Singh, Shingara Singh, Jagroop Singh, Rajinder Singh Mehta, Surjit Singh, Jagdev Singh, Harbans Singh and Santokh Singh Samra.

The elections passed of peacefully and Makkar`s name was proposed by former SGPC chief and MLA Bibi Jagir Kaur. It was opposed by Panthic Morcha leader Karnail Singh Panjoli, who asked for a secret ballot.

Shampura, who raised the banner of revolt against SAD (Badal) group this morning, was chosen to by Panthic Morcha leaders to contest against Makkar.

SAD suspended Shampura after the polls. Party`s media advisor Daljit Singh Cheema told reporters there was no room for leaders showing "indiscipline".

The SGPC passed several resolutions after the election, raising various demands.

It sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue of French Government`s ban on turbans and also urged him to take steps for the renovation of Sikh shrines in Bangladesh.

The SGPC demanded that the Centre make Punjabi compulsory in the CBSE syllabus up to Class XII and give priority to the language in radio and TV stations in Punjab.

Other resolutions related to naming of Rajasansi Airport as Shri Guru Ramdas International Airport and naming of the approach road from the airport to Golden Temple as Guru Ramdas Road; setting up a visa centre in Amritsar to facilitate Sikh devotees visiting Pakistan; and a separate corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur to Kartarpur Gurdwara in Pakistan.

Makkar re-elected SGPC chief

Amritsar, Nov. 25 (PTI): Avtar Singh Makkar, nominee of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) was today re-elected president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) that manages the affairs of Sikh shrines in northern India.

He was elected President for a second-term defeating Panthic Morcha nominee Gurpinder Singh Shampura by a margin of 104 votes.

Makkar secured 139 votes against 35 polled in favour of Shampura. His name was proposed by Bibi Jagir Kaur, whom he had replaced last year.

Till yesterday, SAD(B) president, Parkash Singh Badal, had kept his close to his chest, saying "it would not be appropriate to tell right now."
