Baby 'critical' after pipe burst

Doctors say a critically ill 10-month-old baby scalded by boiling water after pipes burst over her cot has only a 20% chance of survival.

Rhianna Hardie suffered 85% burns to her body when the accident happened on the second night the family were at their new council home in Taunton.

She is being treated at Bristol Children's Hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive is helping police, who say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Doctors treating her say her condition is so severe she could die at any point in the next six months. The next four weeks are said to be critical to her survival.

Taunton Deane Council, which owns the home where the incident occurred, has launched its own investigation and said its thoughts were with the family.

They seemed lovely, caring parents

Rhianna's parents heard a loud bang coming from her room last Sunday and found boiling water pouring from pipes on to the child's cot below.

Her father, Mathew Hardie, 27, suffered burns to his hands and arms as he pulled the baby from the cot.

Neighbour Mark Greenaway said the couple were devastated about the accident.

"I had only spoken to them briefly. They seemed lovely, caring parents," he said.

"They've been back briefly to pick up bits and bobs, but they said after this they don't want to return to the house."

'Real little fighter'

The baby's grandmother Kathleen McKenzie, 47, from Taunton, pleaded for an investigation to be launched.

Speaking prior to visiting Rhianna at the hospital this lunch time, said: "The main thing is that she is still here. She's a real little fighter and that has got to bode well for the next few weeks."

Mr Hardie and Rhianna's mother, Charlene Haworth, 23, were at her bedside at the hospital on Saturday.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The house was cordoned off for forensic investigations and police launched an inquiry which is ongoing.

"We are satisfied that there are no suspicious circumstances but we are still working on a full investigation with the Health and Safety Executive."

The semi-detached home is one of about 30 council properties less than two miles from Taunton town centre on the A38 road.
