vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਲੋਇਣ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਸੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਮੈ ਡਿਠੁ ॥

fareedaa jinH lo-in jag mohi-aa say lo-in mai dith.

Fareed, those eyes which have enticed the world - I have seen those eyes.

ਕਜਲ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਸਹਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਸੂਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥੧੪॥

kajal raykh na sehdi-aa say pankhee soo-ay bahith.

Once, they could not endure even a bit of mascara; now, the birds hatch their young in them!

"bhagat fareed was walking through a cemetary his foot hit one of them and he saw a skeleton with ants all over it. he smiled. upon seeing this people with him were obviously confused. who smiles in a cemetary? they asked. one of them asked bhagat jee what was the reason of their smile. bhagat jee replied,

there was once a very beautiful lady. she was so beautiful that every prince, king, nearby wanted to be with her. they would lend her money so that they could enjoy her company. because of this she could keep many servants and could live lavishly without doing anything. this lady used to to do a lot of shingaar (make up) and used to put grinded up mascara. one day one of the servants didnt grind the mascara properly and when this lady put it in her eyes, it started irritating her a lot. she got really mad and started beating on the servant. she beat the servant so much and servant started bleeding even. she said to the servant, do you want to destroy my beautiful face?

bhagat jee paused for a moment and said pointing towards the skeleton, look she threw such a fit when a little surma irritated her eyes, she got so mad and beat the servant. but look now, the same eyes that had once enticed the whole wide world, look at them today, the same eyes are presenting such an ugly scenario. there are ants walking in those eyes."
