Saarang, Fifth Mehla:

Here and hereafter, God is forever my Help and Support.

He is the Enticer of my mind, the Beloved of my soul. What Glorious Praises of His can I sing and chant? ||1||Pause||

He plays with me, He fondles and caresses me. Forever and ever, He blesses me with bliss.

He cherishes me, like the father and the mother love their child. ||1||

I cannot survive without Him, even for an instant; I shall never forget Him.

Says Nanak, joining the Society of the Saints, I am enraptured, lovingly attuned to my Lord. ||2||25||48||

At this stage one is blessed with Dhiyaan (focus) on Naam. One feels blissful and appreciated the life that has been given to them; everything around you feels Hariya (rejuvenated). This is because the passions and desires have been identified and through this realisation and with the Shastar (weapon) of the Guru's Shabad, ones Naam Khanda would have become very sharp, in order to fight ones passions and desires.

I am a wrestler; I belong to the Lord of the World.

I met with the Guru, and I have tied a tall, plumed turban.

All have gathered to watch the wrestling match, and the Merciful Lord Himself is seated to behold it. ||17||

The bugles play and the drums beat.

The wrestlers enter the arena and circle around.

I have thrown the five challengers to the ground, and the Guru has patted me on the back. ||18||

A fight with the lower self

One feels that the temptations and passions of the mind have been paralysed and defeated through the Guru's-Shabad. This is where the seeker enjoys the higher planes of spirituality and feels the ecstasy of Naam. But even at this stage, one will not abandon bentiya (prayers) to Guru Sahib as the mind has not been fully conquered and often awakes to tempt the seeker of its previous bad habits. At times the seeker will accept defeat and give in to their mind, but only through Ardaas and sincere prayers can one overcome this and enjoy the higher states of Simran again. The temptations of the mind are weakened but not completely destroyed.

At this stage one is blessed with more Dhiyaan (focus) on Naam and when one does Ardaas it is always Parvaan (accepted) because Ardaas is constantly done with Dhiyaan. Only with Dhiyaan on Naam can ego be eradicated which in return makes the seeker feel humble towards Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib only accepts those prayers which are done through Gareebee (humility).

haumY nwvY nwil ivroDu hY duie n vsih iek Twie ]

Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place.

When one feels that their mind is taking control and they are losing the battle within their mind, a heart felt ardaas with full devotion to Guru Sahib, will help the seeker to overcome their troublesome mind.

Stage 4 of Ardaas

As ones Dhiyaan increases on Naam their Rang (love) increases this is because the heart-lotus flower within, which was once locked-up in its self, now flourishes and when the arrows of Naam hit it, the love forever more continues to grow.

pRBu hoie ik®pwlu kmlu prgwsy sdw sdw hir iDAweIAY ]1] rhwau ]

As God shows His Mercy, the lotus of my heart blossoms, and forever and ever, I meditate on the Lord. ||1||Pause||

At this stage ones desires are destroyed and they have only one thing on their mind:

mn isau jUiJ mrY pRBu pwey mnsw mnih smwey ]

One who dies fighting against his own stubborn mind finds God, and the desires of the mind are quieted.

At this stage one seeks only for Darshan (meeting) with Waheguru Jee and ones mind is transformed and shaped into a beautiful jewel. Just as a Potter makes beautiful pottery out of clay, so is the mind transformed into a jewel with the Guru's- Shabad. At this stage one is filled with Sehaj (peace) and longs to see the Darshan of Waheguru, even if it is just for a second. It is important to say here that all desires, hopes, passions of the mind are all abolished and ones mind is filled with Sehaj (peace). The seeker no longer asks for worldly things and instead prays that:

ey mn myry bwvly hir rsu ciK swdu pwie ]

O my insane mind, drink in the sublime essence of the Lord, and savour its taste.

An ris lwgw qUM iPrih ibrQw jnmu gvwie ]1] rhwau ]

Attached to other pleasures, you wander around, and your life wastes away uselessly. ||1||Pause||

It is important to realise that even at this stage ego isn't totally eradicated. Ego is only completely eradicated when the seeker becomes one with Waheguru.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
