Historic Meeting – delegates from right to left Cllr Gurchran Singh, Anup Singh Choudry, Sardar Bishan Singh, P S Sarna, Avtar Singh Makkar and others

Meeting to finalise the structure and faculties for a proposed University being set up by the Government of Pakistan in honour of Guru Nanak took place in Lahore on 15th and 16th June 2007. The meeting was attended by Sikh representatives from across the globe and included Sardar Avtar Singh Makkar , president of SGPC, Sardar PS Sarna the president of Delhi Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sardar Bishan Singh President of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee along with members of Evacuee Trust Board Pakistan.

Representatives from England included Councillor Gurcharan Singh the former mayor of the London Borough of Ealing and Sardar Anup Singh Choudry a former London lawyer and member of World Muslim Sikh federation.

World Muslim Sikh federation prepared an 18 pages of proposed draft and 3 dimensional Concept plan as a blue print for the proposed university in response to request from the Government of Pakistan who had invited all the delegates to respond likewise.

Gurtej Singh from Chandigarh also produced a 3 page proposal at the meeting. Sardar Avtar Singh Makkar provided a copy of brochure on proposed Guru Granth Sahib University in Fategarh Sahib as a model and sought affiliation of these two new universities ..

The meeting after considerable deliberation allowed request from World Muslim Sikh Federation to grant 2500 acres of land as was explained on concept plan instead of 350 acres which was allocated initially for the project. It was also resolved that the university would be an independent international university and would be housed at Nankana Sahib and not at Lahore.

The meeting also resolved to name the University as Baba Guru Nanak International University.

There was unqualified and unanimous support from all the delegates and the government for the setting up of this university. The Government of Punjab under the auspices of Chief Minister Chowdhary Pervaiz Ellai has also devised urban plans to up grade Nankana Sahib as one of most beautiful cities in Pakistan which will be known as the City of Knowledge.

Anup Singh Choudry said that in drawing up the draft proposals and the concept plan on behalf of the World Muslim Sikh Federation he had based the idea on a typical campus University in Britain with all the best facilities of the University of Cambridge and London. The university was designed on grid systems composing 12 sectors He added that the university at Nankana Sahib will have one of the finest facilities of any university in the world so that a heaven of learning is created for its students and visitors. The city of Nankana Sahib will truly be a city of Knowledge. When the university is completed properly qualified guides will be available to give a tour of the campus.

The University will inter alia have a centre for Sikh studies and comparative religions, a department for development and consolidation of Sikh law, and department for explaining science and the universe on the basis of Gurbani.

On conclusion of the meeting Lt Gen Zulfikar Ali Khan the chairman of the Evacuee Trust Board who chaired the meeting stated that the next step was the preparation Master Plan. Following the meeting Sardar Manmohan Singh Khalsa, chairman of the World Muslim Sikh federation stated in London that his organisation would be happy to assist with the preparation of the master plan based on the existing concept plan and the draft proposals by instructing global firm of architects expert in design and landscaping This would ensure that there was right ambience and architecture to build around 50 buildings in the campus The architecture proposed is Sikh architecture and/or blend of Sikh and modern architecture so that they are award winning buildings befitting 2500 acres site. The forest and botanical garden will be a special feature in the campus. More details with a concept plan and proposal will be released soon.

Hey what fantastic news for the pakistanis!!! They get a brand new fantastic university! Looks like sikhs have spent time, effort money, and utilised their political influences in order to achieve this project!

Pakistani students should now be proud of the worlds largest university! they will without doubt produce some of the worlds best scientists, mathematians, politicians, academics etc etc! well done to the world muslim sikh federation ....

cough cough cough cough

hmm a few questions ....

without being too pessemistic i have a few points on this university.

1) Why does this organisation which seems to be bending over backwards to please the pakistani's seek to benefit the pakistani population when sikhs in punjab are struggling?

2) What university's has this org assisted in punjab? In fact what work has this organisation done in punjab for the sikhs full stop?

2) It seems that the organisation has simply submitted a design for the uni, will the orh also lobby the indian govt to build a similar learning institution in Amritsar? if in pakistan then why not in punjab which has more sikh students and would benefit the sikhs?

3) How many sikhs will benefit from this pakistani university? Compared to how many sikhs would benefit from it had it been built in punjab (east punjab)?

4) How many students are expected to sit the sikh/gurbani courses? How many pakistanis who are nearly ALL muslim will spend their time studying gurbani? Realistically .... how many? In fact how many pakistani sikhs will want to study gurbani over say engineering and IT?

5) how will manmohan fund an international firm of architects on this project to work on the correct ambience to help pakistani students study?

6) Will he also be hiring an international firm to investigate the architectural problems at darbar sahib amritsar? seeing that he has so much money to spend on a pakistani uni, lets see him and the org help at home first.

Please also see the sikhsangat news item below.

As the muslim sikh fed is so tight with the muslims and pakistani govt, perhaps they can comment on these activities of changing the gurdwara architecture to islamic architecture? will the org stand up agaisnt its owners, opps sorry against the pakistani govt and say stop?

There is a Guru Nanak University in Amritsar, the one that has a Namdhari chair. I visted this last year I don't think much Sikhi is being taught there from the small number of youth that had kesh. I came across a cleanshaven Proffessor from the university at a PCO who could hardly stand as he was so drunk. In fact the head of the Agricultural University in Ludihana which was a Sikh stronghold is cleanshaven now.

Since 1984 when the universities in Punjab were politically active, they have been run down and Sikh focus removed by the Government.

Maybe new standards could be applied at the University in Pakistan

These are factual points made by Veer “Isingh” Jee and very much true.

As well as the general schools and educational institutions in Panjab - Guru Nanak Dev University, Panjab University (and the colleges beneath it), Panjab Agricultural University...etc are not able to live up to the fundamental principles of Sikhi.

There are exceptionally few, or more likely, IF EVEN ANY, of those numerous institutions with names to do with Sikhi and its history that can live up to these names.

No common atmosphere of Sikh conduct is implemented to compliment the names of these institutions to the students in general (excluding obviously those who study Sikhism at degree level in which some Sikhi HAS to be taught to them of course – but is this with or without bias?).

For example, even though members of different religions and beliefs attend, Christian educational institutions or Roman Catholic ones have a common atmosphere (according to the religion) implemented in their overall structure and operation, so that in general all students have a familiarity, acquaintance and awareness of their beliefs. Hindu ones are the same and of course Islamic educational institutions are strict also. In this same way, where there is a Sikh educational establishment, even though it may have students from different religious backgrounds and that is respected, the overall structure and operation should act in accordance with Gurmat and to Panthic standard, not have a bias or prejudice towards the teachings of who it is named after, or to focus on other religions (for example in Panjab, on Hinduism instead of Sikhism, or as we all know the RSS-type foolish propaganda of mixing the two in order to project Sikhism an off-shoot or part of Hinduism).

University Sikh Societies in international countries outside of India, that are independently free from political pressure, are known to have positive effects on those who initially know nothing about Sikhi and to inspiring them to become practising Sikhs. Such should be the attitude of the administration of Sikh educational establishments in Panjab.

Even those that were politically engaged at one time, they can no longer teach even basic Gurmat or Sikhi to the general students (without bias or prejudice?), let alone anything that is at PANTHIC level.....

It is only worth building more Sikh universities or those with Sikh names, if they will live up to that name and indeed apply a character to teach and implement a Gurmat/Panthic environment within their everyday operation.

Dhaas hopes this new proposed Sikh university in Pakistan, if it goes ahead, will function independently without pressure or restraint from any other organisation, to meet these types of general necessities and set an example for those universities (and other educational institutions) by and large in Panjab that cannot in overall live up to their name.....

The Sarovar or the holy tank in Gurdwara Panja Sahib at Hasan Abdal has been covered with green stones. Also, the interior of the gurdwara has been decorated with green colour glass. The floor design of the "Parikarma" of the Gurdwara Punja Sahib is characteristic of Islamic architecture.

iam not saying that the person how wrote this report is blind and agent of rss and india.but this is the picture of panja sahib i dont see any green stone do you.

Why not have a hindu sikh federation?? If it ok to have a muslin sikh one, whats wrong with the hindus? .. awwwww soormah you wouldnt be racist against hindus would you now??? i think in the interest of equality you guys should open up the international super duper hindu sikh federation!!

and sorry but are you suggesting that this 'oneman band federation' is responsible for opening up hte gurdwaras in pakistan to the sangat???!?!?!?!?! and that THIS ORGANISATION is in charge in pakistan??!? in charge of what? cleaning up pakistani boots??

IF this group is IN CHARGE in pakistan, then YOU and THIS GROUP are responsible for the beadbi happening to the gurdwaras there. have a look at the article posted above and see how the sikh gurdwaras are being changed to suit pakistani/muslim tastes. so you have just blatantly told us that since this group is in charge in pakistan, that it is happy to see muslims/pakistanis taking over and changing the sikh gurdwaras to make them look like mosques. if this is true then the sikh muslims federation is a disgrace and even worse then the sgpc!!! as least they only cover the gurdwaras in marble ... you guys are turning them into mosques!!!

hmmm i am personally a khalistani believer and have been for many years, for more years then youve probably birthdays, but your speaking trash. if u need muslim/pakistanis for sikh gurdwaras in pakistan, then wen we do get khalistan, will u not need something in place with the hindus/indians to be able to have control and visit the gurdwaras across india? or do u simply intend to swap them for the ones in pakistan? see you havent quite thought this one through have you??

its obvious pakistan is using these weird organisations to further screw up our community, we have indian govt influence on one side, and pakistani influence on the other. its a good job the khalsa is niaara and stands on its own two feet.

please reply to the above points and whether the muslim sikh federation has made any comments on why gurdwaras in plakistan are begining to look like mosques??

ps in regards to comments about the bad universty situation in punjab .. thats my point exactly, the uni's in punjab need a massive overhall to benefit the punjabi and sikh people. but instead we have jokers like this muslim sikh federation who would rather spend probably hundreds of thousands of pounds (dnt have a clue where that money is comiong from or going to come from ... ps they have claimed to get international companies to do work for THEM, this will cost ££££££!!) on benefitting muslims and pakistanis, which is fine, but why not help your 'own' people first??! people cry about how bad it is in punjab, yet this group claims to have influence but wont do anything to help punjab. its a joke!

and yeh i think its hilarious too!!! imagine getting used by the pakistani goverment!!!!!!! how thick must you be to be an agent of pakistan!!!
