Karnal, July 7: The hair of a Sikh youth was forcibly cut off with a sharp-edged weapon over a dispute in Karnal, Sahara Samay sources said. The incident took place last night.

According the sources, the youth, Parvinder Singh, had a dispute with some other youths who resided in his neighbourhood. In a bid to settle scores, the youths allegedly took Parvinder to their home where they attacked him with a 'katari' several times following which they cut off his hair.

They also allegedly manhandled the youth.

To add to his woes, the police also tried to hush up the case when the victim went to the local police station to report the case. They also initially refused to register an FIR.

The youth later approached the media who intervened in the matter. Police has said that the incident was a simple case of manhandling and ruled out that his hair was forcibly cut off. For Sikhs, their hair is a symbol of their faith.

In accordance with the Sikh philosophy human body is sacred because in it dwells the Spirit of God and what makes it the living image of God is the Mind and Spirit of Man. A complete human being must preserve all the hair on his body as essential and inseperable part of the body. The complete Man who is physically and spiritually the image of God is conceived in Sikh Scriptures as a man with hair and turban on his head.

Sikhs have been outraged by this incident which they termed as an insult to the youth's faith.

The youth said that police advised him against registering a case saying that this would bring unnecessary shame to him. They told him not to highlight the issue that his hair was chopped off.

Speaking to the media, police said that it was a simple case of manhandling.

why isnt anything done about this?
