1. Is dastar a Punjabi thing or a Sikh Thing??

2. I see lot of men in dastars doing lots of stuff that they shouldn't be doing. Could a dastar on non-amritdhari be considered equivalent to karra on non-amritdharis??

Turban has always been part of Indian/Punjabi culture. People in India have been wearing turbans before Sikhi was even created. So to answer your first question, I will say both. It is a Punjabi and Sikh thing.

but why do they call every turban wearing person in Punjab or west a "sikh" ? Shouldn't they be called punjabis if they ain't following sikhi (we are talkin about people who wear turbans) ?

Me personally, I let "God" decide who is a Sikh or not.

I think people who do call those "singhs" (the ones not following sikhi) Sikhs are usually the ones that think Punjabi culture and Sikhi is the same thing. Also the lack of knowledge of the sikh religion in the sikh community plays a role here as well.

On a side note, I find it funny how you only mention men. What about women who do bad things as well? I am sure there are keshdhari women out there that are just as bad as those non-practising keshdhari men too.

The "turban" or "dastaar" has been around for hundreds of years... way before Sikhi.... arabs/muslims wore turbans, and indian kings wore turbans... it was seen as a sign of wealth/status in india... many of those arabs/muslims who wore the turban were seen as 'holy men'.... there's also many africans, and rasta's who wear dastaar... so, by no means is it a 'copyright' of sikhi....

only ting is.. now the vast majority of those who dawn the dastaar are Sikh, so the world itself sees the 'turban' is a Sikh 'thing'...

for those who wear dastaar n do tings dem nah supposed to be doin, they shud tink twice and realize the importance, significance and symbolism of wha it is... same ting wit those who wear kara's (both amritdharee and non-amritdharee alike)

well, we label ourselves right.. what should the media label them as? its confusing.. because if the media asked that person face to face, that person might say he/she is sikh.. so the media will say 'sikh'...
