The kara is the round iron bracelet (some call it bangle), and some wear the steel one. It has many meanings from what I know of. One purpose it used to serve was to protect the wrist in battle. The kara symbolizes the One Infinite Formless, as it is circular, and that is without beginning or end. Its a constant reminder to a Sikh that his/her hand should never commit an evil deed. I like to think of it as a "handcuff", that we are tied to the feet of Gurujee, and also as that thing you tie around the neck of your pet dog (is it called noose? lol ), such that we are having a Master and are not "lawaris".

The kirpan is not a knife, or dagger as some state. Its usually called "ceremonial sword". Kirpan stands for kirpa + aan. "Kirpa" means grace, and "aan" means honor. The purpose of kirpan is to safeguard the honor of yourself and/or anyone else if needed. Gurujee blessed us with His grace, His kirpa, and gifted us with the kirpan, and so because of His kirpa a Sikh can stand up for his/her own honor, and also the honor of others.

Desires/ Lust (Kaam)

Wearing the Kachhera, a Sikh is reminded to control his desire and only look at his own wife or husband. The Kachhera reminds us to self-control and to control the urges of Kaam.

Greed (Lobh)

Wearing the Kara in our hand we are reminded not to commit crime or theft with our hands. The Kara constantly reminds us of Guru Ji and the hands which can be used to misdeeds fuelled by greed are reminded "you are bound to the Guru, remember Vaheguru is always watching you". Therefore, the Kara is a continual reminder of "Think of the Guru, before yourself".

Anger (Krodh)

Wearing the Kirpaan, you have the power to kill someone and therefore you to have control your anger more than the other person. The Kirpaan represents the Grace, Truth and Justice, which a Sikh represents which can only happen if a Sikh has no anger.

Attachment (Moh)

Combing the hair twice a day with the Kangha, when we see dead hair being combed out, we are reminded that just as our hair are not permanent, so is everything around us. One should comb one's mind with Gurbaani (the Divine Wisdom), just as one comb's their hair with a Kangha.

Ego (Haumai)

Wearing a Keski (Dastaar) to cover the Kesh on the head one commits him or herself to higher consciousness, saving them from vanity. Crowning oneself with a Dastaar one reminds themselves that their head belongs to Guru Sahib and that they should not have ego. With a Dastaar covering the hair-knot on top of Dasam Duaar, all worldly fashion stops dead. The Dastaar guards the Sikh man and woman from drowning in vanity and society-led fashions. A man or woman wearing a Keski well be self-conscious of living up to their principles, living up to the image they are portraying and the Guru they are representing, therefore subduing their ego and Manmukh (self-centred) mind.

A student stabbed her secret lover's pregnant wife to death while in the grip of a terrible obsession with her innocent young rival.

Mindy Sanghera, a 23-year-old Sikh, was destined for a high-flying dentistry career after a string of top exam grades when she fell in love with playboy businessman Sair Ali, a Muslim.

But when she found out he had secretly gone through with an arranged marriage to his teenage cousin, Sana Ali, and that she was pregnant, she became consumed with jealousy and decided to eliminate the woman standing between them.

After writing hysterical letters in which she questioned whether she was turning into "a psycho", she waited until Mr Ali was out at Friday prayers, went round to confront 17-year-old Sana, and stabbed her more than 40 times.

In a horrifyingly brutal climax she then lifted the 11-weeks pregnant teenager's top and plunged the knife deep into her belly.

Yesterday Sanghera was found guilty of murder and jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years.

The frenzied stabbing of a shy, innocent teenager while she carried an unborn child horrified millions, but detectives soon discovered she was the unwitting victim of an inter-religious love triangle that would scandalise two communities.

Mr Ali, whose family live in a large, detached house on the outskirts of Bury, Greater Manchester, had been betrothed to Sana, his first cousin, since she was nine.

But while she received a traditional, Muslim upbringing in Pakistan, back in Britain her future husband, now 25, was enjoying himself, conducting secret affairs and frequenting nightclubs.

Among his lovers was Harmohinder Kaur Sanghera, known as Mindy, a pretty Sikh student who had caught his eye after they were introduced by friends in 2005.

She is the youngest daughter of a respected Punjabi couple living in a £400,000 house in Solihull in the West Midlands.

Her father Gurnek is thought to be a manager for Royal Mail while her mother Satinder works at Marks & Spencer.

Mindy was destined for a career in medicine after achieving straight As at King Edward the Sixth Grammar School.

At the time of the killing she was approaching the end of a course at Birmingham University's School of Dentistry and had a posting lined up at one of the city's top practices.

She and Mr Ali, who ran his own mobile phone business, conducted their affair in £135-a-night rooms at a four-star hotel to keep it secret from their families.

By last year she was besotted with him, saying she wanted to marry him and have children together.

He told her they could never marry because his parents would never accept a Sikh daughter-in-law.

Sanghera, however, was convinced her future lay with him, and talked of converting to Islam.

Westernised and previously not particularly religious, she started to abstain from alcohol, began wearing a headscarf and eating halal food.

With Sana about to turn 17, preparations were in hand for an elaborate wedding ceremony back in Pakistan, after which she joined her husband at the family home in Bury.

Slight and shy, Sana rarely ventured outside, and friends said her only interests were cooking and cleaning.

According to her mother, Maryam Fatima, she was lonely and disappointed in her new life with her Westernised husband, who stayed out late and had little in common with her.

Mr Ali had failed to consummate the marriage on their wedding night, and he admitted he would take Viagra before having sex with her, but by the spring of this year it was announced that she was pregnant.

It ought to have been the signal to his mistress that they had no future together, but by now she was beyond reason.

Sanghera would light candle after candle when he was away, never letting the flame die out, demanded that he phone her and speak to her until she fell asleep, and wrote to him saying she wanted to be his "golden girl".

At other times she would make abusive comments about Sana or demand to know whether they had had sex the night before.

In one of her letters to him she wrote: "I think I am going crazy. I thought I could handle it and deal with cutting contact with you but I can't.

"Maybe I am a psycho, crazy, or just a fool, or maybe all of thosethings."

Rather than cut off contact altogether, Mr Ali agreed to keep seeing her until after her exams that summer, and they secretly entered a temporary Islamic marriage.

Then finally, in the words of prosecutor Peter Wright QC, in her "jealousy and desperation" and frustration at her predicament, "she allowed all reason and good sense to desert her".

They spoke by phone on the evening of Thursday, May 10, discussing going away together that weekend.

The following day, with Mr Ali at mosque and his teenage brother at college, Sanghera drove to Bury.

After duping the teenager to let her in, she went with Sana to the couple's bedroom, produced a six-and-a-half inch kitchen knife, and stabbed her 42 times.

Before fleeing, she plunged the blade into her belly.

The baby, a boy who was to have been named Abdul, would have been due last week.

Sanghera then calmly spoke to Mr Ali on the phone before returning home, leaving his sister to discover the horrific scene.

Sanghera admitted visiting Sana but claimed she had left her alive and well, and at her trial the defence suggested Mr Ali had killed her.

She looked shocked as she was found guilty of murder at Manchester Crown Court, struggling to keep her composure and fighting back tears as the sentence was announced.

In a statement to court, Sana's husband – whose behaviour was branded "weak-willed and reprehensible" at the trial – said he felt "indescribable" emptiness since her death.

Sana's mother said the family had finally secured justice.

"Sana will be happy today," said Mrs Fatima.

Someone needs to have some discreet words with tonday and tell them to keep their "you know what" in their chuddies a little more. Plus someone really needs to have a word with many many "upneean" and tell them not to give it up so easily.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!

    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
