HOLLA MOHALLA

SIKH MARTIAL GAMES

VENUE & TIME

Harris Lecture Theatre, Hodkins Building, King's College London, Guy's Campus, SE1 1UL

Nearest Tube Station - London Bridge

HISTORY

Holla Mohalla is the great annual Sikh martial festival of the Khalsa, which falls in late March. The event was specifically inaugurated by Guru Gobind Singh to infuse a permanent martial spirit into the Sikh community. It was in March 1700 that Guru Gobind Singh added the Sikh martial festival of Holla Mohalla to the end of the traditional Hindu Indian festival of Holi.

On this annual event, Guru Gobind Singh would organise martial contests between two Khalsa armies, one of attackers (‘Holla’) and other of guardians (‘Mohalla’). The aim of the Holla team was to dislodge the Mohalla team off the hill fort of Lohgarh (Iron Fort) and capture it. The aim of the Mohalla team was to drive back the attackers and keep hold of the fort until sunset. In this military war game, the contestants clashed with each other fiercely, and fought bone-breaking contests with the wooden clubs and sticks. This contest would begin early in the morning and ended at sunset, after which the Guru would reward the victorious Khalsa warriors and those who had shown exceptional daring and skill.

EVENT

The Guru’s clear l

essons of physical and mental preparedness as epitomised by the celebration of Holla Mohalla are being forgotten daily by the Sikh community. The skills and training imbibed by the individual participating in Holla Mohalla are those that are not only applicable in a battlefield context but are also useful in today’s hectic, fast-paced lifestyles. This event has been organised to help young Sikhs to understand the meaning and hidden treasures that are embodied in Holla Mohalla, the Guru’s game.

The event promises to be both exciting and educating, with world class speakers specially selected to present a range of talks covering the Sikh martial heritage.

i wouldnt know who u are actually refering to when saying UK nangs. but i know the organiser and he isnt a nang.

this event is organised to educate and remind people of there martial history.

it is organised to make the ignorant, educated.

the event is for all.. even Nihang haters :) @ ...end of the day..if people all loved them, they wouldnt have actually been feared on the Battle field.

u cant judge a whole community on one person.

if we did we would never progress out of our manmukh way of thinking.

every one is entitled to there opinion.

the ones who want to learn will come

the ones who dont ..wont.

end off

oh yeah this event is also for all the martial arts fanatics out there too!!! :ww::

Whats the organiser's name?

Nihangs might have been feared once upon a time, but not any more.

And the one's who call themselves 'nihnags' in this country only bring shame upon the name, as NOBODY fears them whatsoever! they all running around scared that they gonna get beaten up and filing complaints to the police!!!

LOL how funny is that.... nihang singhs, the army of guru gobind singh ji has to file a complaint to the police that some people have threatened them!!!!

LOL

My own belief is that real gursikhs are the only real nihangs, putting a dumalla and living in a dera isnt enough! Nihangs are meant to be fearless.... so are these boys real nihangs?! i dont think so!

ps nobody hates nihangs, these boys are not real nihang singhs, they just pretenders! so chill, theres no judging of a whole community, cus they aint even part of that community!

    • was researching this and came back to this thread. Also found an older thread:
    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
    • All of these are suppositions, bro. Linguists know that, generally, all the social classes of a physical area speak the same language, though some classes may use more advanced vocabulary. I'm talking about the syntax. That is, unless the King is an invader, which Porus was not. When you say Punjabi wasn't very evolved, what do you mean? The syntax must have been roughly the same. As for vocabulary, do you really think Punjabis at the time did nothing more than grunt to express their thoughts? That they had no shades of meaning? Such as hot/cold, red/yellow/blue, angry/sweet/loving/sad, etc? Why must we always have an inferiority complex?
    • I still think about that incident now and then, just haven't heard any developments regarding what happened, just like so many other things that have happened in Panjab!
