Sad needs some advice regarding Nitnem, I currenlty work a 9-5 job and other than that I workout daily for apporx 2-3 hrs and as a trainer mentioned I need to sleep atleast 8-9 hours to see a difference with my workouts & size. Now I do 5x Japji Sahib & 5x Rehras Sahib daily, while working or working out walking around and I make sure I do Ardas two a day along with Kirtan Sholia before I sleep. Usually I dont get my 8-9 hours more like I get 5-6. Now I need advice, is it ok to go to sleep at 11:30 pm wake up at 2 am do Nitnem 5 banis (Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Ten Sawayas, Chaupai and full Anand Sahib) and once that is complete go back to sleep and wake up at 7:30am. I also wondered if I can cut down on my current paath and start the above Nitnem. Please help as I want to be led to the right path.

Gurfateh ji,

As far as I am aware it is ok to do nitem at 2am and sleep afterwards, do ishnan before you start though.

My advice first would be that you shouldn't be telling people how much paath you are doing. You should keep it gupt as the phal you get for it is lost when you tell people. Others may say differently but many gursikhs I have done sangat with have made a point to tell us that we shouldn't tell anyone.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong with taking a nap. If you're tired/need sleep then sleep. However, many Gursikhs say the Western notion of 8 hours of sleep being optimum is quite generous and we don't actually need that much sleep to function properly.

With regards to changing your nitnem routine, the compulsory rehat for a Sikh is 5 baania (Jap Ji, Jaap, Tv Prasaad Sveye, Chaupai and Anand Sahib) in the morning, Rehraas Sahib in the evening and Kirtan Sohhila before you sleep. This is hukam and not negotiable. You must do this regardless of any other extra path/simran you do. It can't be substituted for other path etc. So as long as you do the prescribed nitnem as mentioned, anything else you do on top is your choice.

Vaheguroo jee kaa Khalsaa Vaheguroo jee kee fatehh.

Hi Actualy,

According to Gurmat :

6 hours is a man's sleep

7 hours woman's

8 hours is a child's sleep

9 hours Fool's sleep (Though i also sometime sleep 9 hours when tired)

But attaining this is a bit difficult, but i think we should. (some may disaaprove)

And another thing in reagrds to woking up i think you should fix a time such that ..after doing Nitname u should instead of sleeping..get ready and leave for your work. Coz if u woke up onc and then go sleep again and again woke up ...u will realy feel tired..

If you think it takes 3 hours to do nitname...Woke up at 3-30 am do ishnaan and start doing nitname at 4 and you will be free at 7 ...get ready take breakfast ..and set for work...

and if someone suggests better follow that.. :-)
