Dr Harjinder S. Dilgeer is a well known writer and supposed scholar. Recently he has published a book called Sikh Tavarikh- a box set of 5 books about the Sikh History. The five books are set out in 5 different timelines. 1st book is 1469-1708. 2nd 1708-1850. 3rd 1850-1947 4th 1947-1984 and the 5th 1984- present day.

At first glance the box set of five books looks like a brilliant publication and attempt to bring the whole of Sikh History in one colloction. However at reading the book, we realise the parchaar in the books is warped and is influenced from people like Inder Ghaggha, Ragi Gulshan and Prof. Darshan Singh.

A meeting was recently held at Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha Birmingham. Representatives from numerous Gurdwareh, Jathebandiya and organisations attended. These included Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji (GNNSJ), Jasdev Singh Rai (Southall), Balwinder Singh Chahheru (Sandwell Sikh Council), Cllr. Gurdial Singh Atwal, Sukhbir Singh, Gurmeet Singh Sidhu (Wolverhampton Sikh Council), Jathedar Balbir Singh (AKJ UK), Jathedar Mohinder Singh Khera (Oldbury Guru Ghar), Jagdev Singh Boparai (Sikh Council Birmingham), Soda Singh (Dudley Gurdwara), Ranjit Singh (GNG West Bromwich), Jathedar Mota Singh (Nihung Singh Sabha UK), Charan Singh (Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Gurdwara, Tividale), Kulwant Singh Dhesi (Coventry) Tarsem Singh Deol (British Sikh Council), Balihar Singh Ramewal (Shrimoni Youth Akali Dal), Sarbjit Singh Kooner (Shrimoni akali Dal Amritsar) Ranjit Singh Rana (Sahib magazine), Jathedar Joga Singh and Kuldeep Singh Chahheru (both cordinators of Federation of Sikh Organisations).

At the meeting, along with other things. the issue of the book was raised. The people present at the meeting learnt that the book warped and distorted the history of the Sikh Guru Sahibans aswell as Sikh Shaheeds and Sikh Gurdwara's. Examples of this are as following:-

1) Dr Dilgeer claims Gurdwara Sacha Sauda, Gurdwara Sant Ghat Sultanpur Lodhi, Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib aswell as other numerous gurdwaras are "fake gurdwara's." The history connected with these Gurdwara's are made up by poets and other fake scholars.

2) Claims that Guru Nanak Dev Ji never fed the hungry Sadhus with 20 rupees. Dilgeer says "Guru Sahib will never have wasted their money on Vehlereh (freeloaders)"

3) The Panja at Panja Sahib is not of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's because it had existed hundred of years before Guru Nanak Dev Ji. (page 123)

4) That Guru Arjan Dev Ji never sat on a tatti tavi (hot plate). This story was made up afterwards by poets and writers. (page 220)

5) Claims that at the time of birth of the Khalsa in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji first used the Khanda to put five drops of Amrit in their mouth before giving it to everyone else. Therfore the concept of 'Aape Gur Chela' is wrong and made up. (page 316)

6) Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj was completed with Guru Tegh Bahudar Sahib Ji's Bani at Anandpur (instead of Damdama Sahib) in the year 1678 (page 298)

7) Sahibzada Ajit Singh ji was married to Bibi Tara Kaur and had a son called Hothi Singh. After the Shaheedi of Sahibzada Ajit Singh ji, Bibi Tara Kaur was married off to a Singh from a village called Burhanapur (page 405)

8) Claims that Baba Moti Ram ji Mehra never existed and is a figure of someones imagination. (page 1653)

9) He also downgrades the importance and work of Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, Akali Baba Phoola Singh and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. (page 1659)

10) Todar Mal never did the cremation of the two younger Sahibzade and nor did Sher Muhammed Khan side with the younger Sahibzade in the court of Sirhand. (page 1653)

11) Says Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen was an agent of RSS and was preaching Brahmanic stuff. (page 1655)

These examples are few and selected out of many. On every other page, you would inf history distorted and misrepresented. Dilgeer has aslo changed crucial dates of Sikh History such as Parkash Divas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is changed to 1661 from 1666, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji's parkash is changed to 1590 from 1595.

He also claims Guru Har Krishan Sahib ji gave the Gur gaddi to Guru Tegh Bahudar Sahib ji in Delhi. By doing so, he claims the story of Makhan Shah Lubana and Guru ladho re is false and made up.

Dilgeer claims that Damdami Taksal has no historic significance and only came to light in the 1970's. Dilgeer also claims that Baba Deep Singh ji never had their head cut off. There are also false claims about other Sikh Jathebandiya/organisations including Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Pingalwara, Nanaksar and Rara Sahib.

Nowadays it is not the norm for many people to read thick and long books, therefore the matter of this set of books has not risen before. The Federation Of Sikh Organisations has brought up this issue to highlight the problems the Panth is facing as a whole. It was declared in the meeting by the representatives present that the book and all materials written by Dilgeer would be boycotted.

Please be aware of false parchaar like this and ask your local Gurdwara stall and retailers not to stock this book.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
