I have been thinking about this topic. thought I would share with cyber sangat.

Naam is given so much importance in ones life. Naam is like putting ONE in front of all the zeros we collect doing daan, pun, sewa, change karam etc. etc.

Without naam, they go to waste. I heard in kathas that when we are taken by jamdoots pulled towards dharamrai, jamdoot give us hard time and we beg for mercy and then jamdoot say give me your dan pun sewa change karam in exchange and slowly slowly we are left with nothing and our slate is left with nothing on it by the time we are reached to dharm rai.

But if naam dee kamai hai, taan sabh daa fal vadh janda hai and jamdoot don't even give us hard time and we don't have to loose those good deeds in exchange for anything.

Now the question would be whats naam? the way I understand so far with my tuchh budhi, its to keep God in your mind all the time (wheneven you get to turn towards yourself while being in human race of worldy life). And the goal of the life is to keep the mind turned towards your innerself more and more. That would be the bhagati marag. more you can stay connected with your innerself, more you can feel the connection with GOD. more you can be aware of the monkey mind's tricks, better you will be able to connect yourself.

O mortal, chant continually the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

Without the Naam, cursed is the body, which shall be taken back by Death. ||1||Pause||

Without the Naam, no one's face shows good fortune.

Without the Husband, where is the marriage? ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਛਤੀਹ ਪਰਕਾਰ ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਇਐ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਭਈ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਨੰਗੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਹ ਹੋਰ ਪੈਨਣ ਕੀ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਸਰਧ ਗਈ ॥

ਅਰਥ: ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਡਾ ਛੱਤੀ (੩੬) ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਈ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ) ਭੋਜਨ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਅਸੀ ਰੱਜ

ਗਏ ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ

ਕਦੇ ਬੇ-ਪੜਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵਾਂਗੇ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰ (ਸੁੰਦਰ) ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕਾਂ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਚਾਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵਣਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਹਮ ਕੰਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਰਕੁਨੀ ਦੀਈ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕਾ ਹਮ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸਭ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਗਈ ॥

ਅਰਥ: ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਡਾ ਵਣਜ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਮੁਖ਼ਤਿਆਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ;

ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਾਂ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਲੇਖੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਕੰਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਪਈ ॥੧੭॥

ਅਰਥ: ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ

(ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉੱਕਰੇ ਹੋਏ) ਲੇਖ ਦੀ ਪਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

But this the situation where only a few can reach.

There are different stages in in a person during the course of NAAM.

One is NAAM japo:-

Nam japo mere sajan saina,

Nam bina me avar na koee, vade bhag gurmukh har lena.

and

Rasna japti tuhi tuhi.

Here the Nam is recdited ,pronouncing through mouth and tongue.

After sometime( some time means few days or few months or may be

few years ) of oral recting of nam, pronouncation stops but recitation

continues silently in the mouth cavity and on the the tongue, and again

after sometime recitation goes deep in the throat and without the effort

by tongue ,it continues inthe throat (voacal cord)and it can be felt whenever

we concentrate and this is described as:-

"Ajapa jap hain"

Here the stage can be said as Simran:-

"Har ka simran jo kare so sukhia sansar"

and

"Simrau simar simar sukh pavaho, Kal kales tan mahe mitavaho."

After some time of continuous simran in the throat it goes deep in the

heart and mind where the stage is called "Dhyan" and dhyan is effortless,

and continuous process which is the stage which is described as :-

"soee dhyaeeye mere jeeare sir sahan patshaho" and

"So dhyan dharohu jo bahur na dharna" and

"Har ka nam gurmukh kine virle dhiaya"

And sign of a person who reaches at this stage is described as :-

"Jeta pekhan teta dhyan,

jeta bolan teta gyan,

jeta sunna teta nam."

and

"Je ko sikh satguru seti sanmukh hove,

Hove ta sanmukh sikh koee jeeaho rahe gur nale,

Gur ke charan hirde dhiyae antar atme samaale,"

Why should we do recite (jaap) naam? Here is the reply given in Gurbani:-

ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁਖੀਆ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖੀਆ ॥

ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋਰੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥

ਅਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਤਿਖ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਆਘਾਵੈ ॥

And after Jaap ,it is Simran and what is Simran? Here is the reply given in Gurbani:-

ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਨੁ ॥ ਦੇਵਨ ਕਉ ਏਕੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਦੀਐ ਰਹੈ ਅਘਾਇ ॥ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥

ਮਾਰੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਏਕੋ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਾਥਿ ॥

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਪਰੋਇ ॥

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

And after Simran ,it is Dhyan and what is Dhyaan? Here is the reply given in Gurbani:-

ਕਹਦੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧੭॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੩੩॥

And without Naam nobody is successful in this universe :-

ਸਬਦੈ ਕਾ ਨਿਬੇੜਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਤੂ ਅਉਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਤੇ ਨਾਮੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

ਨਾਮੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਉਧੂ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੭੨॥

And as such Guru is the only source of Naam who provides us infinite treasury

of Naam(Akkhhutt Khazana) . As such we are thankful to our Guru Sahiban who have

provided us Infinite treasury of Naam(Akkhhutt Khazana) in form of Guru Granth Sahib ji

wherin each tuk (line)is ful of Naam .Let us taste the nector from it by reading, listening,

obeying becoz :-

"GAAVEA SUNEA TIN KA HAR THHAE PAVE JIN SATGUR KI AGYA SATT SATT KAR MAANI."

The Name is Maya and wealth for me; the Name is my capital.

I do not forsake You; I do not know any other at all. ||2||

The Name is my family, the Name is my brother.

ਛੂਟਤ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਲਖ ਬਾਹੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਹ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਹੀ ॥

ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਘਨ ਜਹ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥

ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਮ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥

ਹਉ ਮੈਲਾ ਮਲੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੩॥

ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗ ਕੇ ਗਨੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨ ਕੋਸਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਹਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੋਸਾ ॥

ਜਿਹ ਪੈਡੈ ਮਹਾ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥

ਜਹਾ ਪੰਥਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਿਞਾਨੂ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾਨੂ ॥

ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਤਪਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਮ ॥ ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤੁਮ ਊਪਰਿ ਛਾਮ ॥

ਜਹਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾ ਮਨ ਤੁਝੁ ਆਕਰਖੈ ॥ ਤਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਰਖੈ ॥੪॥

ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੋਟਿ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਤ ਸੰਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸਾਧ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨ ॥

ਮਨ ਤਨ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਏਕੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੈ ॥੫॥

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਬ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਭੰਗੁ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਭੋਗ ਜੋਗ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਬਿਓਗੁ ॥

ਜਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੬॥

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮਾਲੁ ਖਜੀਨਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਓਟ ਸਤਾਣੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਜਨ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ॥

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਹੀ ਛਪੈ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤਰੇ ॥੭॥

ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਕਾਮਧੇਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥

ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਥਾ ॥

ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੰਤ ਰਿਦ ਵਸੈ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥

ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
