SIKH VOTE 2010 - TELEVISED DEBATES ON THE SIKH CHANNEL

The Sikh Federation (UK) in association with the Sikh Channel and Operation Black Vote has invited leading politicians from the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Green Parties to take part in high profile BBC Question Time style programmes – SIKH VOTE 2010.

Representatives from each of the mainstream political parties are expected to take part with representatives from the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and UK Independence Party also being on the Panel.

Issues of importance to Sikhs in the UK will be discussed so that individuals can make a well informed voting decision at the General Election. The issues range from fair representation in public life, the 2011 Census, protecting and promoting the Sikh identity in the UK and EU, freedom to wear the five articles of faith, human rights concerns etc.

These issues and many more need to be on the radar of political parties and MPs seeking the votes of Sikhs. Sikhs born in the UK comprise around two-thirds of all UK Sikhs and are becoming particularly mindful of who will best represent their needs and deliver on their promises.

There will be weekly events in five major cities in lecture theatre style venues at UK Universities. The schedule of events is as follows:

1. Birmingham - Saturday 20 March 2010

2. London - Saturday 27 March 2010

3. Leicester - Saturday 3 April 2010

4. Bristol - Saturday 10 April 2010

5. Leeds - Saturday 17 April 2010

Details of the exact venue will be released one week before each event. If you wish to be part of the audience and participate in the debates you will be expected between 2-5pm. You need to register in advance with the Sikh Federation (UK) by emailing your name, full address and the event in which you wish to participate to info@sikhfederation.com. There will be a restriction on audience numbers so please book your place as soon as possible.

A Sikh Federation (UK) representative will chair each of the events. All questions to be asked will be based on suggestions from the audience. Feel free to email suggested questions to info@sikhfederation.com.

Refreshments will be provided to members of the audience and Panel members between 2.00-2.30pm. The Sikh Federation (UK) will be working with University Sikh Societies and local Gurdwaras to ensure the events are a success. The programmes are expected to be televised on the Sikh Channel (Sky 840) the following Monday at 7.30pm.

Sounds brilliant. Who will be directing the panel of guests? I mean like a presenter.

I hope Sikh Channel appoint someone other than that Dabinderjit Singh.

We need someone with good knowlege of issues effecting Sikhs and current politics. I cant wait.

I hope Sikh Channel do appoint someone like Dabinderjit Singh who is extremely articulate and can effectively communicate issues around Sikhs and current politics.

I was thinking more along the lines of Ranjit Singh Srai. He is brilliantly articulate. Very well educated in Sikh affairs. He knows how to interact and put questions to politicians in a good mannor. I was watching one of the programmes he hosted on Sikh Channel. I still remember when he gave a excellent speech at the Sikh freedom rally. He did mainn on the 84 discussion aired in June. He knows how to choose the words that stick in peoples minds. He has a way cant quite explain it.

wjkk wjkf Pyare Khalsa ji - I am very impressed and fully support this venture and hope this is the direction we are ALL going in the future. We need unity. Panth Ekta can only happen once we start talking and learning together as the Khalsa. Sikh Channel gets better day by day :)

As stated above: 'A Sikh Federation (UK) representative will chair each of the events.'

The Sikh Federation (UK) is organising, funding and arranging for politicians to be present. No doubt the Federation will appoint those who are capable of chairing.

But remember the questions will come from the audience NOT the person chairing.

As expected Sikhs from Leicester did come forward today to register.

However, London seats are going the quickest and Birmingham the slowest !
