June 1984 - Remembrance March & Freedom Rally

Recommended Posts

SOME OF THE MESSAGES WE WANT TO GIVE

1) Sikhs throughout the world were outraged by the June 1984 Indian army assault on the Darbar Sahib Complex, where the Akaal Takht, Sikh Reference Library and historic artefacts were destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

2) To maximise casualties the unprecedented action using artillery and tanks was deliberately timed to coincide with the anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

3) There were huge numbers of pilgrims in attendance, which resulted in thousands of innocent Sikhs being killed in cold blood, many with their hands and feet bound, including women and children.

4) Over 125 other Gurdwaras, including forty historic Gurdwaras throughout Punjab were simultaneously attacked using massive fire power. Thousands of Sikhs were arrested, tortured, and killed, including children.

Please contact your local Gurdwara and join the many thousands of Sikhs in London on Sunday 13 June 2010 for the Remembrance March & Freedom Rally to remember those massacred in June 1984.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS INVITATION TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK

OVER 5,000 HAVE ALREADY BEEN SENT THIS MESSAGE - WITH YOUR HELP WE CAN DOUBLE THIS

The 2-minute Sikh Channel Promo started last night.

The three quotes below are used:

Joyce Pettigrew described the attack 'not to eliminate a political figure or a political movement but to suppress the culture of a people, to attack their heart, to strike a blow at their spirit and self-confidence. The army . . . went berserk and killed every Sikh man, woman and child who could be found inside the temple complex'.

'For five days the Panjab has been cut off from the rest of the world. There is a 24-hour curfew. All telephone and telex lines are cut. No foreigners are permitted . . . all journalists were expelled. There are no newspapers, no trains, no buses . . . Orders to shoot on site, were widely carried out. The whole of Panjab with its 5,000 villages and 50 major cities, was tuned into a concentration camp.'

(Christian Science Monitor, 8 June 1984)

'Thousands of people have disappeared from the Panjab since the siege of the Sikh's Golden Temple here several weeks ago. In some villages men between 15-35 have been bound, blindfolded and taken away. Their fate is unknown'.

(Sunday Times, 22 June 1984)
