Recognising The Sikh Genocide 1984

They seem wooried about the petition

India Today

India and Canada had barely resolved the recent visa row when their shaky ship of diplomatic ties was rocked by yet another crisis.

Just two weeks ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's trip to Toronto, an Indian-origin MP moved a motion in the Canadian Parliament demanding that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots be declared "genocide". Sukh Dhaliwal was supported by another MP, Andrew Kania, while presenting the motion on Thursday.

Dhaliwal demanded that the Canadian government direct India to take steps to bring the guilty to book.

Both the MPs are from the Opposition Liberal Party.

Dhaliwal, who moved to Canada in 1984, represents the Sikh-dominant constituency of Newton-North Delta on the outskirts of Vancouver while Kania represents the Punjabi- dominant Brampton West constituency near Toronto.

Both the MPs said their petition was signed by 10,000 people even as their party boss Michael Ignatieff condemned the move.

Four other MPs, including Indo-Canadian Navdeep Bains and Gurbax Malhi, are also reportedly supporting the petition.

"The petitioners call on the government of Canada to recognise that an organised campaign of violence, rape and killings took place in India in November of 1984 against the Sikh community, resulting in the deaths of thousands. Canada should recognise that this organised killing is genocide according to the UN convention on the prevention and punishment of the kind of genocide," Dhaliwal said, reading the motion.

"The failure of successive Indian governments to bring to justice those responsible for mass revenge attacks on Sikhs after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi 25 years ago is a severe blot on India's legal system and democracy," a Canadian newspaper quoted Bains as saying.

The petition drew angry reactions from many quarters.

The Canada India Foundation, working towards strengthening ties between the two countries, slammed the petition and described it as "calculated to inflame anti- India sentiments among the Sikh community". Indo-Canadian leader and parliamentary secretary Deepak Obhrai said: "What happened to innocent Sikhs in 1984 was a tragic event for which no guilty should be spared and we have been told that the Indian government is taking steps.

But the petition is a mischievous and divisive step by these individuals who want to harm the Indo-Canadian community. The petition is only to promote their own agenda.

"The Indian Prime Minister, who is the most respected Sikh in the world, has made statements on this and the Indian government is addressing the issue. But these guys want to use Canada to divide India," he added.

India and Canada will ink a civil nuclear agreement for the supply of uranium and reactors to India during Singh's Toronto visit beginning June 26.

The deal was announced in Port of Spain last November after Singh held talks with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper on the sidelines of the Commonwealth heads of government meeting.

Officials said besides selling uranium, Canada was also keen to export the 1,200- MW advanced CANDU ( Canada deuterium uranium) reactor to India.

As the two countries use similar technology, they are also exploring the possibility of setting up nuclear power plants in third countries, official sources said.

Waheguru Jee Da Khalsa, Waheguru Jee Dee Fateh.

I am surprised why Sikhs in UK are not exploring this option (asking British Parliament to recognise this as a Genocide after considerable number of signed petitions by Sikhs in UK; it's going to be a hard struggle - but there need to be a point to start). I remember a Live program on SikhChannel "Time to Forget 84"; this option was presented by one of the panel members - but the panel leader had his own vague ideas. On the whole - that program ended in just vague discussions w/o any conclusion. I believe this was the only and conclusive option which was presented by one panel member - which didn't appealed good to the panel head; probably sometimes I think even SikhChannel just wants to air LIVE programs to just gather audience and present some vague things here and there - w/o really knowing what to do next OR even accepting and going ahead with the legitimate solutions; OR some people over there have their own political goals?

Note - only educated people will understand the meaning of this recognition - I didn't found any body in the SikhChannel panel even educated enough to understand the importance of this recognition ... It took 90 years for Armenians to get the genocide of Armenians in Serbia recognised by UN - Serbia always used to refuse to get this recognised ... Same thing has happened now in Canadian Parliament - but atleast they have taken the first step.

Bhul Chuk maaf.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
