Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Just wondering if there is anyone who wears bana or kurta paja to uni, work, etc.? I'm going to be starting my second year of uni in a few weeks and was thinking about switching to kurta pajama full time for a few reasons. If anyone does this could you please share what effect you think this has had, positive or negative? Any reasons I shouldn't?

thanks

VaheGuru Jee Kaa Khalsa

VaheGuru Jee Kee Fateh!

Bruv that's wicked! I wore Baana full time in my last years at Uni so I'll tell you what I experienced ...

Firstly it looks and feels amazing ... Especially when wearing Baana in places that are Kaljug-fied, (Trust me Uni can be Kaljug-fied LoL) it gives you a sense of fearlessness which also uplifts your state of mind ...

Baana helps to keep you focused on the 'Real Game' ... Like you know that you're in Baana you're representing Guru Jee's Fauj so you're less likely to do something stupid or be seen in a manmatt place i.e. cinema, club, bar etc ... Thus allowing you to focus on what you're meant to do be doing at Uni - i.e Be in the library studying!!!

Though the downside could be the amount of haters you're gonna get ... There's the tendency for other AmrithDharee's to have eerkha (jealousy) towards you so be prepared for that ... But then again it works as a good thing too coz when you're in Baana you feel on top of the world which can boost your ahankaari/ego levels so I guess abit of eerkha/hatred keeps the levels of ahankaar low ...

It's important you don't get caught up with what Sangath are thinking/talking etc ... Keep the focus on VaheGuru Jee, before you leave the house always do Ardhaas to Maharaaj to bless you with righteous deeds and to protect you from the Vikaars/committing Kurehets and to uphold the honour of wearing His Baana ...

Goreh/Kaaleh don't usually say anything but some may stare alot ... I just flash them a big smile and they ain't got no choice but to smile back haha! But I've found they stare more when you're wearing the western clothes ...

So just be careful what you say (foul language, swearing, etc), how you behave and what you do coz you'll be representing the whole Fauj - i.e. everyone who wears Baana, Sikhee etc ...

Also, remember it's not just about the external ... you gotta back it up with Baani/Seva - do Gurbaani/Simran on the go ... By taking this step, alot more become inspired and start wearing Baana too ...

May VaheGuru Jee bless you with Baani and Baana Dee Daath ...

I am also planning on wearing bana/kurta pajama to uni. Its my first year... but I don’t really care about what anyone has to say, but my parents aren’t a fan of the idea and believe I should wear "normal clothes" lol

I say go for it!!!... I know a few gursikhs who do wear bana to uni and they said to me that no one says anything the fear is within us... people will tend to look because its different to them, its the same way we tend to look at people who listen to rock music and dress a bit different…but we don’t say anything because its up to them... what makes them feel comfortable :) !!!!!

“The weakness in is always inside us. If we become strong inside, then no one (goray, kaalay, cheenay) can say anything. The feeling that one gets wearing Guru ka Baana is not describable. One feels the presence of Siri Dasmesh jee all the time. And Siri Dasmesh jee too has to keep laaj of his Gursikh who is in baana and otherwise is a good Gursikh.” (I have copied and pasted this from a post off gurmatbibek written by Kulbir Singh as it explains it perfectly  )

Key is as penji said we will be in roop of the khalsa... so we shouldn't do anything stupid or silly as we will be representing SIKHI, people should look at you and be inspired feel as that’s what a gursikh is...we should create the image of the khalsa so that if some one sees us, they shouldn’t be afraid of us. As gursikhs shouldn’t frighten anyone or be frightened of anyone except vaaheguroo...

Sorry if I have said anything wrong… it’s the first time I have written a post lol I usually the one who just reads posts. I don’t have any knowledge of sikhi and am just a learner so please if I have said anything to upset any one please forgive me...

Here are two posts that are worth a read:

I used to wear kurta/bana full time when I was at school. I stopped wearing it when I came to uni but looking back there was no need.

At uni I felt alot of peer pressure to 'fit in' to not be left out etc and at school I was left out due to being proper sikh and I got called names, like granthi, uncle ji, people would think i was dumb and assumed I didn't know english etc so I didn't want to experience that at uni so I stopped alot of the good things I was doing.

Looking back on it all, its totally do able to be sikh at uni. All you have to do is make sure you top the year. When you get a good job nobody is going to care about how popular you were at uni, how many friends you had, if you went partying, what music you listened to, how many girls liked you, if your good looking or ugly, what clothes you wear, if your 'cool'..these things don't matter, they hire you to do a job and if your the best at your job thats all that matters and infact they respect you more for having morals.

I think the understanding that these things don't matter will carry you forward through the tough times and in 3 yrs when you finish your degree you will be happier and many of your friends will say they respect you. Alot of my school friends tell me now how much they respected me at school for sticking to my faith, its quite funny because these were the same people that made be feel so low and sadly they don't know I changed at unibecause of that.

I think these things are an issue because we are first generations/second and people who have gone before us didn't bother to educate or teach or they gave up the battle which means the prejudice and sterotypical mould didn't get broken. Now its up to people like us to challenge it and educate and teach people properly especially when the people who have gone before have not bothered explaining things properly because of their own fears etc.

I say totally go for bana and don't give up. Each time you feel low understand you are correct and know the system will work in your favour if you stick to working hard on your studies.

Some great advice imo!

That's even more wicked if there ain't that many AmrithDharee's there ... Dhan Guru Dhan Guru Piaareh!

Yeah you'll be alright with 2/3 Cholas and pajammi or could try longer leg warmers ... Just wash them daily untill you can get more later on ...

For those that are wanting to wear Baana to Uni but find it abit daunting right now, try wearing it to Sikh Society events to start off with then gradually wear it a couple of days during the week or make a day when you visit GuruGhar right before you start Uni so you'll want to wear Baana that day and give you some sort of excuse for wearing it to start out with ...

Seriously don't underestimate the power of Baana ... It's saved me from a number of troubles and possible obstacles in my Sikhee Jeevan!
