Sikh body seeks to rebuild demolished Gurdwara at Har-ki-Pauri

CHANDIGARH: Gurcharan Singh Babbar, President of the All Indian Sikh Conference (Babbar), said that the organization is putting in efforts to re-establish the historically world famous 450 years old gurudwara ‘Shri Gian Godri Sahib’ that was demolished by some anti- social elements during 1984 riots.

Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club here, Gurcharan exposed the role of Sangh Pariwar and Ganga Sahib (in Haridwar-Uttrakhand). Gurcharan Singh told that the DM, SSP of the Haridwar- Uttrakhand administration and many other top class officials, on November 21, 2010, the occasion of birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had assured publicly that the gurudwara premises would be handed over to the Sikh community very soon, after a peaceful talk with the concerned organizations. This is in records of both the print as well as the electronic media. No effort in this regard has yet been observed till date, he added.

Gurcharan Singh also told that sources in the Uttrakhand government have informed that the leaders of the Sangh Pariwar and the Ganga Sabha in Haridwar have clearly told the government that they would not let ‘Gurudwara Gian Godri Sahib’ to be re-constructed on the ‘Har-ki-Pauri’ at any cost. He also said that the DM and the SSP of the Haridwar jurisdiction have conducted many meetings with the Sangh Pariwar as well as the Ganga Pariwar but in vain.

“Considering the seriousness of the situation, we appeal that the President, the Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari, L. K. Advani, Marget Alva, Governor, Uttrakhand, to immediately intervene into the matter so as to prevent any kind uncontrollable situation that might get created due to RSS and Ganga Sabha’s negativity”, said Gurcharan.

The DSGPC, the SGPC and the Akal Takht Sahib, all are in favor of the re-construction of the gurudwara but no practical steps have been initiated by any of them. Gurcharan also said that Akal Takht Jathedar might have certain political compulsions.

Two party leaders Sattu Singh and Bachittar Singh, of the AISC (B), have publicly announced that they would self immolate in front of the Gian Godri Sahib Gurudwara if the land is not handed over to the Sikh community. No deadline has though been laid by them.

Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal has personally written a letter to the DM, Jharkhand, to look into the matter and take the necessary steps, added Gurcharan Singh.
