They are both different and are an okay investment only if you want some primary source backing up what we already know. Some things are blasphemous because it's written in a British/Persian/Hindu viewpoint and they do change the history on purpose but the authors do clarify it to some extent.

If you want to know real Sikh history i raelly wouldn't recommend them.

My suggestion is to read well known Sikh history books that are supported by the panth and then proceed to these. They can only be proof that the accounts happened, nothing more.

I've got them and they are pretty important from a historical point of view as they contain very early descriptions of Sikhs but as the last poster pointed out, they do refer to practices that have since died out in the quom (especially Sicques etc.), ones some people may find unacceptable or even offensive today.

But as primary sources that give us an idea of how our ancestors were viewed by outsiders they are invaluable. It goes without saying that you also have to factor in the biases of the original writers when to consider the contents.

Persian etc. is very good for contemporary information on Banda Singh Bahadhur's battles as it contains accounts by those who were actually fighting against him.

If you want to look back at the past get them. However, if you are looking for documents that outline and support orthodox practices as understood today, get something else.

At this point in my life, I was flagging in my Sikhi. Reading about Sikhi from non-Sikhi sources was an uplift that I needed. As above, it may not be for everyone and there is some writer bias evident in the accounts. The authors put the account into perspective and either back bits up or show the inaccuracy through use of other sources.

TBH i have a vivid imagination and I could see myself riding with my Sikh brethren.
