i am 16 years old in 11th grade. I want to become more involved in sikhi as my new years resolution, I want to start of with wearing a pagh to school. I wear patka and every other sikh wears a patka. I want to change that and start wearing pagh, But i am slightly afraid how people will take this change. I know some people are going to laugh behind my back and it will be hard. How can i make up my mind of wearing a pagh to school? I have seen sikhs cut there hair and go to school with it. My school has around 10% indians and rest are whites and blacks. So how can i get the confidence and courage to start wearing it to school? because honestly i think patkas look silly, but i dont know how others will take it.

Think of the sacrifices of the four sahibzadas of Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji, Baba Fateh Singh Ji, Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Baba Jujhar Singh Ji , Guru Gobind singh Ji , Mata Gujri Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib Ji and countless Sikh shaheeds, this will surely give you courage and strength

Congrats on your decision on wearing a Pagh to school. We are so proud of you.

The Turban is a symbol of bravery and honour. Here is why Sikhs wear turbans.

This will hopefully give you all the answers you need and the confidence to wear the turban to school.

If you any other concerns, please feel free to ask.

When I changed, most classmates didn't notice. Those who did, said it looked better. Wear it, no one will make fun of you, in fact they will agree dastar looks much better than patka.

because honestly i think patkas look silly, but i dont know how others will take it.

I wore patka in high school because I had come from India and had to adjust to a life where everyone was speaking a different language. On top of it all, I decided not change my appearance by wearing a dastar as it would have created more problems. So when I started college, I wore a dastar there.

Anyways, dastars can look silly too, some people just dont know how to tie them. Now that I am grown up, I find that "What If's" are the worst. What if i had done that, what if i hadnt done that. Looking back, I think, I should have worn a dastar. High school kids have short attention span. They might make fun of your changed appearance for a day or two but then they will find something else to concentrate on. So I say go for it but as far as wearing the dastar is concerned, Experiment.

Find the style suitable to you and one that you find comfortable. I have been wearing a dastar for 12 years now and my style changes every year. No two days to work are the same, I keep it same colour though.

I am still trying to find the perfect cloth and style even after 12 years of dastar tying.

Good luck.
