Sikh Society (Post University)

Hi,

I graduated from University a number of years ago. Sikh Society's are usually present at Uni for students. I have been thinking about starting a sikh society at my local gurdwara for people who have left uni and still want to connect with other sikhs. I thought it would be a good way to meet new people too as often, even though we all go the same gurdwara, you usually don't end up getting to know everyone there.

Do you think this is a good idea? If so, what sort of things could be held at such a society? Spiritual, religious talks, social events (outside of the gurdwara, obviously non drinking things) such as trips to london eye, museums, ice skating etc?

What other things could be done?

Yeh its an okay idea, as long as you motivate each other to follow a life of Gurbani, and actually Practice gurbani- esp. naam simran/do bhagti.

I practice naam at work, while out etc, go for coffee, motivate each other to stay in Sat.

I think it would be a good idea to find your local uni and get people to come there. I this is too far then do it at the gurdwara. Its always good to have links with local societies like uni societies.

I agree particularly in the North of England, I have been searching for a non-uni/post uni Sikh societies but have had no luck. Anyone know of one or would be willing to join one?

Well you can join in at local gurdwara with santhiya, gatka, gurbani- kirtan lessons and punajbi classes. People do youth clubs. I think after uni people generally are more interested in working and use weekends to relax then when they have kids it's running after them people don't get much time at points. There isn't much you can do you should really be in touch with people in gurdwara after ardas is done just say fateh or start convo people get to know one another at times people don't really want to but it's good to build links and slowly you all can do your own things out of gurdwaras as a community it's harsh that communities being so connected are disconnected.
