Colour and celebrations as new Sikh temple in Newcastle opens

It's been an historic day for Tyneside's Sikh community with the official opening of a new temple that cost the community £2.7 million to build.

The new building, just off the city's Westgate Road, replaces an old Temple which has been used or almost 35 years.

Today a Holy Book was moved from the old building to the new in a colourful ceremony.

The project has taken 15 years to complete.

The new Temple, called a Gurdwara, will be used as a focal point for the entire community. As well as worship, it has classrooms, meeting rooms and a large dining area.

Around 700 people from all faiths turned out to the opening of the new Temple.

We should always correct the media. What is really annoying is Sikhs incorrectly using the phrase.
