Sawhney was inspired by a quote from Warren Buffett - "For both men and women, the most important decision you'll ever make is your choice of spouse. The most important job is raising children."

From there, it was all a matter of science.

The decision to get married is simple, if you've met the right person. That's where Banihal can help. Sawhney, looked to science to decode the complex decisions our brains make subconsciously when we meet someone and how those internal cues could help determine compatibility in a lifelong partner.

"I have always admired my grandparents, they had enormous love and respect for each other and achieved a great deal together," explained Sawhney, a former Apple engineer. "They survived the partition, raised five kids, saw numerous ups and downs in business, health and family, and created a beautiful home for everyone. I saw getting married as the beginning of this amazing journey."

Having worked on smart phones and the first iPad, Sawhney saw a future where computers would augment human decision-making and decided to begin building a company that could use technology to help individuals find their ideal life partner. To achieve this, he developed an algorithm that would analyze user answers and the results of behavioral tests to define individuals so precisely that an initial introduction would feel like a perfect match.

Algorithm for matchmaking

Simran, a computer algorithm, aims to provide a sophisticated matchmaking service personalized for each individual. The programme takes digital image of a person and finds the best match in all the profiles and only shows profiles that can lead to shaadi. The matchmaking website, Banihal.com, has created Simran, which acts like a guide throughout the shaadi process.

Ishdeep Sawhney from the website says that Simran first understands what makes each individual unique and learns about their requirements for the match they are looking for. The algorithm is an expert in neuroscience. There are neuroscience-based tests that every user completes when creating a profile on the website. People are asked to describe someone they have already met who would have been a good match.
