As you are well aware, a recall election has been announced in the

state of California. While we are not taking any official position

on the merits of the recall election, should it proceed as planned,

we are urging you to strongly support and vote for Lt. governor Cruz

Bustamante.

After the tragic events of September 11th, Sikhs were mistakenly

targeted. This discrimination and prejudice continues to this day.

When California Sikh Council was formed soon after that, our main

objective was to create awareness about Sikhs and to empower our

community. We extended our hand of friendship to community leaders,

law enforcement personnel, religious leaders and lawmakers. One

individual stood out – Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante, who has shown

unwavering support from the beginning and has proved to be a great

friend of the Sikh community. He has demonstrated an exceptionally

tolerant outlook and a strong willingness to support Sikhs in their

struggle for justice.

§ Lt. Governor visited the Fremont gurdwara and the Sikh Center

of Orange County soon after September 11th and addressed the

congregations.

§ He passed an official California state resolution recognizing

the celebration of Baisakhi to honor "the many contributions of our

Sikh community."

§ He was instrumental in the distribution of a coloring and

activity book entitled, "The Boy with Long Hair," to schools across

the state. The book explains in an age-appropriate way why boys and

men from the Sikh community wear turbans and refrain from cutting

their hair. Public school tea

chers throughout the state will use the

book to teach students about cultural diversity, acceptance and

understanding.

§ He wrote a strongly worded letter to Eidos Interactive,

publisher of the popular video game, Hitman 2, objecting to the

negative depiction of Harminder Sahib.

The Lt. Governor has made further commitments to deliver on these

specific promises:

§ To actively recruit Sikh college students in internship

programs in the State Government. This will increase our visibility

and influence, and benefit the entire community.

§ To provide historic building status to the Gurdwara in the

city of Stockton.

§ To create an official "Sikh Awareness Day" in the state of

California.

The list goes on. This is a great opportunity for Sikhs to have a

close friend of theirs heading the highest office in the state of

California. Let us not miss this opportunity. Please take a

personal interest in spreading this word to your friends. We will be

contacting you in the near future with more details on what you can

do to support this effort.

Thanks
