When Sikhs do food feeding seva feeding millions of Hindus, do humanitarian work, fight Muslims then Hindus praise Sikhs but the moment Sikhs stand up for Sikhi then all of a sudden they all get indigestion and present the report in a negative light. This has been a repeating pattern followed by Hindus in the media for the last 100 years or so. Sikhs need not care for what they think of us. We need to carry on with the task of what really matters and that is standing up for Sikhi. These dogs in the media can bark all they like. Just ignore them.

If it was any other non universal gorra name i would have some what agreed with op on wider subject of our apnie becoming too gorafied but jasmine is such a beautiful natural flower name. Gurbani mentions it too in punjabi off course both in sri guru granth sahib ji and sri dasam guru granth pointing towards same flower. We are really nitpicking on inconsequential matters in life, seriously whats next?

How well do you get on with your Mum ? if you are close share what you have learnt about sikhi with her , maybe show her sikh websites/channels you follow , tell how you feel about sikhi , I'm sure she'll understand you are not going through a phase and support you. It might not be her cup of tea but she should be able to empathise wanting to be a better sikh (most women are spiritually inspired very few are not) . Get her on board first , then tackle dad ... Of course if you get on better with Dad go the other way around , most people want their kids to be good humans so I really cannot see them being so hard on you .
