  1. Dont quit ur job. U dont want to be a burden on society or ur parents. Also my sister tried to quit school to concentrate on bhagti and it didnt help her. While u r going to job and have troubles, god will feel closer. When u try to focus only on bhagti, he will seem far and u can only focus on ur bad qualities and failures. Here listen to this, it helped me alot: http://www.gurbaniupdesh.org/multimedia/listing.php?q=f&f=%2F01-Audio+Books%2FPyare+Jio If link doesnt work, google pyare jio bahi veer singh.
  2. Sikhi has many aspects. And sometimes they dont resonate really well. Like saint and soldier. A saint would never retaliate or intervene, he would think everything is gods hukam. A soldier would resort to weapons as a first means for any problem. Balance is key, one has to determine when to be what. So here, the concept of treating nature as containing gods light and the concept of treating our guru as the highest king are at odds. Flowers and the best most beautiful things are offered to our guru, such as honey, ivory, milk, and silks, kasthoor and kesar. Most of these things are taken away from animals and trees, sometimes forcibly. But these are the things offered to royalty. So why wouldnt we offer to guruji? Some people get upset when milk/yogurt is used to wash takhats and nishaan sahibs. Because they believe it is a waste of food. I think it depends on an individuals' sharda. If u are offering out of respect and love, it will be accepted. If u are having doubts about it being moral, dont do it. But also dont try to stop others from doing it. As they are doing it for the right reasons. Myself, Ive found, whatever we do for the guru will never be wrong. He will accept it and make it right. For example, we had a drought, but because guru sahib was coming to our house, we had to wash all our verandahs, windows, and driveway. I felt really guilty and bad for wasting water on just cleaning. But the next day, when guru ji came, it rained out of nowhere in the summer, but only for a little while. Just enough to replenish what we had used, i thought. So from then on,i never doubt anything that is done for guruji. To show him respect or love. Also, ive learned that if u want ur rosebushes to flower all year long, just cut the flowers. Then the plant will keep producing flowers to make seeds. If u dont cut flowers, the plant only flowers once, the petals fall off, and it forms rosehips which has seeds. So a lot of people cut flowers to keep roses on rose plants. Also, what of people who sell flowers for a living? Mostly thats where sikhs buy them from for throwing. But u are right, slowly the new generation should stop phasing out these old tradtitions that are not environmentally friendly. Or have no use like washing with milk. We shouldnt stop older generation from doing it. Just dont do it ourselves. And it will phase out.
  3. Keep trying. Your mind will clear slowly and will slowly become positive. During jaap, if mind is not concentrating, try thinking of the meanings of what u are saying. Also when u get too sad, try talking to guruji. Tell them ur problems then take a hukamnama here: http://fateh.sikhnet.com//Sikhnet/Register.nsf/CyberHukamnama!OpenForm Also watch this video, to learn about hukamnama http://www.sikhnet.com/video/true-story-power-hukamnama-sukha-singh
  4. You can also try reading/doing paath of SGGS here http://www.srigranth.org/servlet/gurbani.gurbani?Action=Page&Param=1 This has shorter explanations, then the book your reading. Also try to take personal hukamnama. Its when u ask guruji a question or tell him ur problems and he responds back. Here: http://www.simran.info/hukamnama/cyber.html Or here:http://fateh.sikhnet.com//Sikhnet/Register.nsf/CyberHukamnama!OpenForm
  5. Artificial intelligence is currently at the complex algorithms stage. But it is hoped/feared that AI will advance so far it can basically think on its own. So basically make our brains, which consist of neurons/wires passing on electrical signals, artificially using wires, electricity, and computers. I think we are very far from this. So far we have barely learnt how to make our hardware artificially i.e. cloning. And that is only by using premade essentiaL material: egg cells, DNA, and a womb. So to make our software artificially, is still far away.
  6. The gurudwara i go to has no committtee. Basically the guy, hes a doctor, who bought the land and built the building with his own funds, owns it. This is great cause no committees, no power struggles, and fast decisions. And everyone else acts like a sevadaar and gurudwara is really successful. Now its getting a bit difficult tho, because only this 1 family has all the power yet he seems to fear that some of the constant sevadaars might be getting to influential. So hes playing power games and sidelining some sevadaars that have run the school for years and replacing them. But still its good that there are no fights. Its a bit dictatorial but it works. I think places where there is a lot of corruption and violence and ppl getting too worked up,and ppl not respecting law, there dictatorships work the best. Like panjab, middle east, and our gurudware.
  7. Personally im glad the swords are blunt. If they are just going to be used for decorations or against sikhs, they should be blunt. I would not want murder cases happening every six months in our community because every six months or so theres a gurudwara fight. Those are shameful enough. Also it might create permanent divisions if there was a murder at a gurudwara fight n the old punjabi blood for blood and family enemities might come to the west. Its strange how some things like swords becoming blunt and larivaar saroops being replaced have happened when wronguse and beadbi became common. I wonder if the former caused the latter or its just a lucky correlation.
  8. 10 days is way too short for india. I say go to spain. 2 days are gonna be wasted just traveling to and from india. But u havent been for 10 years so i would say save up ur holidays so u can go for at least a month. If thats not possible, and u have no longer holidays coming up, then go to india. But dont waste ur time travelling in india. Just visit delhi and amritsar. In delhi there are many historical gurudware plus the widows colony. In amritsar there are also many gurudware ( 5 in or near harminder sahib that u must visit to have a complete yatra: Kaulsar, Ramsar, Santokhsar, Ramsar, and i forget the rest. There is also baba atal rai tower) if after visiting delhi and amritsar u have time and arent tired out then think of going to kashmir or himachal pardesh.
  9. Thats a really great idea kaurp! Good luck! Keep us informed, write a post about each day on here. May waheguru help u succeed.
  10. Do rollar skating or ice skating for girls Also kids should join school sports teams
  11. Jealousy and Anger are just thoughts. If u can catch these thoughts as they occur, you can avoid reacting in anger. This is difficult to do at first because reaction is really fast but if u start realizing even after youve reacted: like ive just let anger win or let jeolousy consume me, then slowly u will start to recognize anger, jeolousy before it controls u. Then u will have to fight to subdue it. Sometimes u will lose because it feels good to lash out. But sometimes u will win. When thoughts of anger or jeolousy come dont be ashamed. We all have vices and they are powerful. But it is ur fault if u act on them or dwell on them. U r not ur thoughts. Also when ppl ask when just tell them its all wahegurus bhana or when its the right time or some other vague, smug answer to send them on their way. As per jeolousy, my mom used to say, no matter what we bring these kids fir vi dusare di cheej dekh ki halk pai janda (even if kids are well fed seeing others treats they go rabid) Your guru is samrath, capable of giving u many things, and he has given u lots of things so why like an orphan are u looking at other ppls things and coveting. Have sabar, patience, u will get it soon. Also one always notices what one lacks in other people. So tell similar things to ur mind to help it combat jealousy. For examply say, let others enjoy what they have, my mind, have bharosa my guru will give it to me too. PS have u thought about adopting?

  13. First of all, a sikh is a person who believes in God, the 10 gurus, Guru Granth Sahib and believes in no other religion. And believes in amrit and olans to take it someday. So yes both ur parents are sikhs and getting laha or profit from it. As for you, idk. It seems like u say u dont believe in god, but in reality do? I really think you should watch basics of sikhi you tube channel to learn what sikhi is and how it can fit in ur life and improve ur life.
  14. Sorry Im not any where close to dehradun. But just wanted to tell you that u could get some resources like leaflets, phamplets from basics of sikhi channel. They also have the waheguru course and also street parchar videos. You could maybe learn feom them. Also i wanted to ask, are there a lot of ramraiye in dehradun?
  15. Its definitely ok just to listen to rehiraas sahib and recite along. If it takes u too long to do japji sahib, listen to it too. The whole morning nitnem audio by jarnail singh takes an hour. Its on youtube too.
  16. We meditate on the creator. His qualities and praises. But especially his name. Waheguru. We constantly repeat this name it means Wonderful Enlightener or Amazing Guru or Wow The being who takes us from darkness to light. Our goal is to become like the creator through two ways: meditate and practice godly/saintly qualities like compassion, sweetness, ever happiness, truthful, loving, humility, contentment etc and to realize that we are truly a soul which came from god so realize this world is fleeting and our true origins and our trueself and merge with god. Basically we meditate by repeating waheguru over and over so that we can become more spiritual/moral and realize our soul.
  17. I avoid eating things made by a factory that processes eggs. (And of course this is not an endorsement for OP to avoid it as well. He/she should make their own decision.) Because that information is written for people with allergies and they are affected if the eggs are touching not if they are in the same building. Though in the US,it usually says Produced on Equipment that Also Processes Eggs. So in this case, it is reasonable to presume eggs are touching and maybe in the food too.

    Query

Kaurp, its really hard but balance is key. Before u settle in the perfect stable sehaj middle of the balance, you will tip either too much to worldly side or to viraag side. You must decide the middle ground yourself after experimentation. The goal is that u can perform ur worldly duties, ur farz to ur parents, to society, to the panth while being able to keep naam or remembrance of god 24/7. This is almost impossible especially in the beginning so one must decide which to give importance to. The best thing is to do everything but not to have hopes or desires and spend at least 2 hours on simran prayers daily if ur serious. So go to school, study hard, but dont care about the materialistic rewards. Do it cuz its hukam, and leave the rewards to god. Also the hukam/destiny thing is hard to fathom. So just remember not to do a good action that u r capable of is also paap. So to lie is bad, but to stay quiet and not tell the truth when it could be helpful is also bad. To be cruel, is to be bad, but not stopping cruelty is also bad. So if u see an injustice happening and dont do anything, ur creating bad karma and it will effect ur naam simran. When an injustice is happening over which u have no control, u can do nothing to stop, then its hukam. Accept it and move on. Its like Assissi's prayer. Hukam is more complicated but this how i simplify it for myself. Also watch basics of sikhi videos about hukam. In their marriage series they talk about how to live that balanced life. Maybe simran345 can find those videos. She is good at that :)
  19. Hanji. They are called mission sarab rog ka aukhad naam.
  20. Crossroads , i think the issues u have with putting anything on ur head are the root cause of ur dilemma. So if that can be resolved youll be fine. You even said u dont mind wearing a turban but u cant do to headaches etc. Try gurbanihealing.com. they came to do a camp at our local gurdwara and they seem legit. Gurbani Healing cured people who couldnt wear a kara because they were allergic to metals. So they might be able to help u...
  21. Corny-trite, banal, or mawkishly sentimentalToo cliche. Too sweet. Too much feeling. Embarrassing. Like Barney the dinosaur
  22. No this link says unsuccessful download. But i tried the link above again and it worked. Thanks.the translation is very good, not at all difficult to read or understand.
  23. The link isnt working at this moment
  24. Agree. Some parts did not match Sikh thought. But i liked how it described God n how he decided to create the world. N i like the explanations about if there is 1 god why are there so many religions...but i couldnt finish it, it concentrated too much on how we ourselves are a creator and a God.
  25. SikhRI is also doing a lot. But they r mostly based on east coast of USA. Look at their website. They r trying to make Sikhi accesible to outsiders
