  1. Aussieland ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS!!!! I wore my dastaar whilst in uni there all the time and never once faced any racist problem. Instead the gorehs respect you more for following your religion and faith. In fact, they are very intrigued to learn about Sikhism & our practices. I daresay Aussieland is considerably more tolerant. Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

  3. my parents enrolled me in a driving school back home when i turned 18 to learn how to drive.. 1st instructor was a muslim dude who drove round the circuit once teaching me about car parts and how to operate the clutch..then he got out and let me play with car and drive it round until class ended 2nd instructor who stuck with me till i got my license was a chinese YOUNG punk kinda guy..always wearing shades...*i still remmeber whenever we saw each other,we'll give one another this "i'm sick of you" look and say "YOU AGAIN..WHAT THE HELL"*...he had a fiery temper whenever i made mistakes but was awesome at teaching me. & he was really happy when i passed the traffic police test on my FIRST attempt. stick with the pros to learn driving.

  5. have the kid undergo testing...he might be suffering from ADHD-hyperactivity subtype from what you're describing...treatment than can commence asap (not necessarily putting him on methylphenidate Ritalin..but he can undergo therapy and his parents can undergo training as to how to manage hyperactive kids.) best to get him diagnosed early so the sooner treatment commences, the quicker he "recovers". and Pheena, sugar isn't a cause of hyperactivity in kids..studies have contradicted that finding. so please dont deny the kid his sweets :wub:
  6. if watching the show offends your sentiments, why don't you write in to the producers and if tis really bad, gather a group of people to get it off-the-air. talking about this issue here will do nothing except raise awareness......you'll need alot more than just raising awareness if you want to deliver the real goods.

  8. i'll keep this REALLY short coz i'm hard-pressed for time...have to rush to a meeting soon... maybe i'll write more when i'm back home.. 1) do ardaas and strengthen yourself sikhi wise...gurujee will bless his daughter in due course. :wub: 2) practise initially by tieing dastaar at home...get comfortable with it (it takes time to get used to having a keski...the first time my masserjee tied a dastaar on me when i was 16.. i had a blinding headache 15 minutes into it and my ears ached TERRIBLY...i nearly collapsed coz i couldn't get used to it....but over time it becomes like part of your body...you get so attached that you can't bear to part with it) once you're comfortable with your keski amongst home folks, you'll gradually get the strength to face the world with your beautiful crown. i'll stop now although i'm tempted to write so much more....dang meetings!!! best of luck dearie bhainjee....hoping to welcome you into the khalsa family soon

  11. there are those kinds of swimwear which look like t-shirts & they don't feel heavy in the water...you could probably go for that.
  12. aaaaawwww what a sticky situation to be in.i always fear that such a thing would happen to me. :wub: perhaps you can consider doing this in future...approx. an hour before the plane lands at its destination, go to the bathroom to neaten the keski and perhaps re-tie a few larhs to tighten it a little as it tends to get loosened over the course of a long haul flight.no matter how tired or dazed i am on a plane, i always make sure i do that in order to reassure myself that my keski wouldn't come out due to some unforeseen circumstance.
  13. i couldn't agree more. he summed up all i wanted to say about arranged marriages. also to the bhainjee who started this post, dont worry if you're rejected on skin-deep issues. coz even if you got married to him, ultimately in the long term(god forbid though), there'll be problems in the marriage coz they dont know what makes a good marriage work....like the saying goes, better single than unhappy hunna?? in addition, one comes across many shells along the wayside whilst searching before the diamond is found. be patient, keep the faith and you'll find your diamond singh. who you were destined to marry (or not) was written on your forehead the day you took birth here on earth, just let your destiny unfurl itself. good luck :wub:
  14. from what i know and from those gyanis i've spoken to....they are usually either forced by the committee members running the gurdwara or the sangat to announce how much X or Y has donated. it's an ego thing IMO and i do hope it's phased out soon.

  17. don't base your impressions of others on hearsay. however if you've heard that a person is "bad" and want to keep yourself safe, perhaps you can just maintain a wary acquaintance with him/her just so this individual is given the benefit of the doubt and you dont get into trouble.
  18. anyway according to most psychologists,the best way to bring up a kid is by being authoritative instead of being authoritarian,, mind you theres a fairly fine line between these two but it makes a world of difference.........errgghh psyc class material all coming out now

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH i'm still in uni for goodness sakes . yeah but i'm a strong advocate of the notion "one who spares the rod spoils the child".a kid should be given a few whacks if he/she is ill-disciplined & needs to be brought in line....last week in my psyc labs we were made to analyse a video about bringing up a very ill-disciplined kid...in that clip, they were teaching that the IDEAL way to treat a kid who misbehaves would be "time-out..i.e. u make him/her sit in a corner for 5-10 mins" and telling him nicely he's not supposed to do this. in the end, the kid ended up being worse off & more idiotic than ever coz the only punishment he got was to sit in a corner for 5-10 mins;something most kids forget easily after a while. now if that kid had been given one nice whack with the danda followed by explanations of why he's wrong, not only will he be deterred from misbehaving in future coz of the pain a danda whack deals you,he'll be aware of his mistakes and avoid committing them in future. (/rant) old methods are GOLD methods
  20. one good slap & whack with a danda JUST ONCE and a VERY fierce look telling the kid you mean business should be enough to make a kid toe the line if he's/she's been trained well. previous generations never used to spare the rod & their kids turned out fine. i can't stand parents who let their child climb over their heads and let the child rule them instead of them being the ones in control. kids need to be disciplined & taught the right thing from day one.
  21. it is possible to make a child sit still through the entire gurdwara divaan....my mother managed it wonderfully well for me & my older sis while we were young kids...it is possible, if parents use the right method.
  22. of course there's no problem with sikhs keeping pets & having SGGS jee parkash at home. to maintain respect for the sanctity of the darbaar in your home, just keep the door closed always so the cat doesn't go inside.
  23. i'll just state the purpose & significance of the kakkars to keep this short & sweet:- Kesh/Keshki---Keep your hair to retain the natural look the Lord gave you, wear your keski to keep this gift of hair neat & in presentable condition so people on the street don't view you as someone uncouth with your hair in a mess etc. Kanga---To keep your hair neat by combing it twice daily minimum.There's bits & pieces of info floating around that it maintains your chakra but thats from a yoga standpoint, you can check it out yourself if you're interested. Kara---To remind you of the universality of the Lord & to keep you in control of your actions. Kaccherra---To remind you that as a Sikh, you have to be modest & respectable at all times. It's also serves a practical purpose,for example, during wartime because it's easier to engage in combat with your bana & kaccherra rather than follow the typical Indian style of wearing dhoti coz that's rather impractical & inconvenient as it slows one down. Kirpaan--- For defense purposes....defending yourself against attacks, a reminder that you as a Sikh should never stand for injustice & should defend the down-trodden & those in need of assistance. **5K's aren't mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee because it was our Dasam Pita who initiated this order....and the bachan(instructions) of our dasam pita was not included in the final copy of SGGS jee when it was compiled in the 1700s at Damdama Sahib. We wear the 5K's because it's a hukam from Guru Sahib & as His children, we should comply with His instructions** Hope it's helped you.
