  1. Punjabi films have increased in popularity in recent years and it could be correlated in that Bollywood films do not seem to be as popular. So much so that the HP Khatris that run Bollywood and predominantly act in Bollywood have 'discovered ' their Punjabi roots. It may not be a bad thing because what you are seeing is soft power. It seems that Punjabi may have some cultural influence on others.
  2. I work with many goreh. One of them is a former arts student, another one has a lot of interest in paintings and talk in great depth. He went to Bilbao and visited the Guggenheim gallery. I never paid any interest in art. Then our Puzzled was talking in depth about Sikh Art. The level of intricacy he went into with the brush strokes, the style of art, the influences etc. I was totally ignorant. We are a sophisticated people and I am going to make an effort next time there is a Sikh Art Exhibition.
  3. Punjabi culture is a multi-faceted. We are multi-dimensional people not a one-dimensional people. Bhangra is far too emphasised, it makes me cringe if I am watching the BBC and there something remotely Asian on and then there is some bhangra track on in the background. It makes us look one-dimensional. However the reality is we have percussion instruments in our culture and we have rythm and footwork. Dance and music is a form of human expression. It is something in our DNA. But there is far more to us. One part of the culture is over-promoted. There is poetry, there is art, there is other literature. There are other forms of music. We like other instruments other than dhol and tabla,we have stringed instrument, horned instruments, keyboard instruments.
  4. Black Lives won't matter a lot when they are getting looted. Those rifles aren't shotguns, they look semi-automatic to me. In parts of the US, with more Asian (East Asian as well as South Asian), Hispanic and other minorities will start to resent Black Lives Matter. They will be asking questions and they won't fall for the 400 years of slavery/oppression line that is spouted on.
  5. What is your opinion on what Larry Elder is saying?
  6. You are probably old enough to remember the LA Riots in 1992. There were Korean stores in these neighbourhoods that were attacked. They were hardly oppressors. The Koreans were on their roofs with guns shooting back. This was almost 30 years ago. I don't see how looting the stores in your neighbourhoods helps with making one less oppressed. A lot of these black neighbourhoods in LA are now predominantely Hispanic.
  7. Yes, one that can be controlled by a particular Sanyiara family ?
  8. It is best to visit. Go there with an objective mind. It is important to look from several factors: -Employment (remember that Canada likes to have something called 'Canadian Experience ', they may not recognise your qualifications and experience. You may need to re-train or go to a more junior role) -Housing (it is very expensive out there, probably more expensive than the UK) -Cost of Living (some things are more expensive there) -Schooling (if you have kids) You will have a different perspective to someone going from Punjab. Therefore your thinking is going to be more from a British perspective. There is a show on BBC called Wanted Down Under. Even though this for British Expats looking to Australia and New Zealand, there are a lot of useful pointers and you can adapt that to Canada. There is also a website called Britishexpats.com, quite useful. Also when you go out there talk to apneh who moved from the UK, that will provide the best insight. Best of Luck!
  9. First question is where do you live at the moment? Second question is have you been to Canada? Third question, do you have any relatives/friends in Canada? Fourth question, are you looking to go there on points system?
  10. Tandon, that is a Khatri. HP Khatri, probably from Delhi. They are very vitriolic against Sikhs. Being Khatri, she probably has some Sikh relatives. These types of Hindus I find have a visceral hatred of Sikhs.
  11. I wonder if GurjantGnostic is ANTIFA?
  12. I have relatives in the USA during the 60's who have lived through the riots at that time. The areas that were mixed became black only. So it is a form of ethnic cleansing. The businesses that are looted are owned by a lot of other minorities. Even minorities begin to question.
  13. This has been going on for decades, nothing seems to change. What begins as legitimate protests turns into looting and burning. It stops being about the original problem and legitimate grievances and takes on another form. It becomes more about creating anarchy and less about justice.
  14. I think we need to help ourselves directly rather than rely on these charities and institutions. We have many obstacles but maybe the obstacle is the way. That is where the solutions are.
  15. I got an idea. Why don't we start an "adopt a bibi" programme. We take in a 1984 widow like a mother or grandmother and each family in diaspora supports her and her family. We can help them with their home and help them directly with things and education for their family. Here's another idea: There are some successful Khalsa Schools in Canada and the UK. Why can't these academies be expanded into Punjab to provide high quality education with a Sikh ethos.
  16. The treasonous amongst our community is the "enemy within", they need to be exposed and flushed out.
  17. It seems to me that whoever really runs India is not only anti-Sikh but anti-Hindu too. It looks like there is coordinated plan by the Islamic, Christians and Marxists to carve up the subcontinent between themselves before they turn on each other. The dharmics will need to fight back. If we do, we will win. It is only our mental state that is preventing us, we lack the ruthlessness. The Abrahamics expect us to be dharmic. For dharma to prevail, one has to sometimes be adharmic. We can defeat them but what will happen is they will revert back to taqqiya and hudabaiya tactics, that will be the time to be even more ruthless.
  18. The goal seems to be to drive the Sikhs out of the valley so it is just muslims left? However, what does this mean? It could be that GOI is cutting it's losses and consolidating? Or it emboldens the Jihadis to attack Jammu and Ladakh? It could mean Hindutva have now isolated the muslims and there is no kafir collateral damage?
  19. I wonder with the opening up of historical gurdwaras in Pakistan and the increasing pilgrimage whether there is some kind of tacit agreement behind the scenes to encourage muslim migration and building mosques.
  20. It is because it is rooted in our sense of egalitarianism. We as Sikhs are very much for the underdog (it is inherently part of our nature) or what we perceive to be the underdog. However, the egalitarianism amongst us is one-sided as we have to deprecate ourselves to feel that we have done justice for others. Selflessness is important for us but we have taken it to the extreme.
