  1. No, that's not the purpose of a heritage site, in essence it becomes a protected site but that doesn't prevent someone from destroying it. It already is in the hands of the Sikh's, well, the SGPC.
  2. It's a double edged sword, on the plus side it gives Harmandir Sahib more protection, the maintenance will be funded by Unesco but the negatives outway the positives especially for sikhs, the Indian government would basically handle the day to day management of it and be in charge, it will loose significance as a religious site, thankfully all the Indian government can do is put the name forward, it's up to Unesco to make the decision so signing this petition will make a difference, if enough people voice opposition they usually do sit up and listen because they are answerable to the UN as they are a agency that works under them.
  3. No, no, this Giani was fresh from the mother land, and my bad, milk not mild, but saying that, he does look a little hungover in the mornings but i always put that down to an excess of karah parshad.
  4. So, as i mentioned a few pages ago, i said someone should grab a Giani and ask them, and after many attempts i finally managed "Grab a Giani" and i asked him about this whole milk thing, the only answer i got was that mild was considered pure (probably due to the cow's elevated status in India) so it has been used for many centuries as well as yoghurt, so basically he didn't have a clue.
  5. I don't accept that, to me if you are so fickle as to rely on some form of media to show a depiction of what you believe in to make it more tangible then you've failed before you've even begun but the unfortunate truth is we now live in an age where people spend more time look down (i.e. at mobile phones or tablets) than looking up so religion and the way it's taught has to evolve but i fear the path we are taking is probably the wrong one, the overall onus is on us, we can moan and complain all we want but we need to come out with a suitable solution. In Islam they have a straight forward rule, no depictions of their prophet, full stop, no if's, no but's, people ignore that and we've all seen the results as horrendous as they are, I would hate to see Sikhi go down that path.
  6. Agree with what your saying here but i do feel this film is being made a scapegoat in some ways, the main issue we have as Sikh's is we have no "Ekta", we can't all sit in the same Gurdwara so how are we meant to come together and agree on what's right and what's wrong, in my eyes the Chaar Sahibzaade animation is in the same boat as this film, we can't have one rule for one and another for something else, we've have pictures that are renditions of our Guru's up in our houses for a long time yet no one bat's an eyelid. I think it's great that people who have watched it are coming away with a positive message but could that message have been spread in an alternative way, could a film have been made about a fictional character who just want's to learn about the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev JI and relay the same message. The feeling i get at the moment is your doomed whatever you do, I think i'll get around to watching it at some point and then make my mind up about it.
  7. For the love of god someone tell this guy to get a decent camera, what is this, 2001 or something, if your gonna make a video review of something at least make an effort to get your video quality decent. As for his opinion, it's just that, his opinion, but he's formed that after watching it so fair play to him, I wish more people would watch something before forming an opinion instead of have a sheep mentality and following the herd.
  8. Yup, that's what we were missing, a waving Singh, we just need a one legged hopping Giani and i think we'll be set....
  9. View's like these make me worry about the future of Sikhi, not on a higher up level so to speak, but on the ground floor, you know, on a human level, if you saw someone hurt on the street would you ignore them because they may not be able to "return the favour", our Guru's made huge sacrifices, not in the name of any particular religion but for the betterment of the human race, absolutely appalling attitude, if you, as Sikh's had a chance to bring a Nazi war criminal to justice would you take the same attitude, if said Nazi was in involved in the murder of Jew's would you ask what the Jewish community have done for you or would you do the right thing and demand justice because something wrong has happened. As far as Modi is concerned, the guy is the PM of a country, while I commend the efforts of these guys he has Diplomatic immunity, he was barred from entering America for these very reason's but that ban had to be lifted because of what he has become, you may not like it, but that's how it works. In the UK we have plenty of people chasing Tony Blair because of their illegal invasion of Afghanistan, it's got nowhere and he's earning plenty doing private speaking gig's.
  10. After watching that video it's like watching a child version of Ranjit Singh Dhadrian Wale and it's a bit worrying to be honest. All you have to to is be a good story teller to deliver a good sermon, it has nothing to do with religion, unfortunately our community goes blind when it comes to religion, also, Sant Baba, really, how does one become a Sant, is there some sort of governing bosy for it or do you fill in an on-line application form or something, it seem's like everyone and their chacha is a Sant nowadays.
  11. Unfortunately the Punjabi race can be very cruel and unforgiving at times, especially if you are from a different backgrounds and god forbid, your skin colour is different to ours, regardless of what Sikhism say's for some reason we still hold these values closer to us than the word of the Guru, pretty ironic considering we are doing the exact opposite of what our Guru has taught us, anyway, best of luck fella, sometimes we find the answer in the strangest of places.
  12. It's an interesting question, next time your at the Gurdwara grab a Giani and ask them, i remember when i was young and inquisitive and I asked, the look I got could have burnt a hole in a car door, on a serious note, I do think it's tradition over religion though, someone in the past probably did it and it's just been that way ever since and no one's ever asked why, worth doing some research especially seeing as it's used at Harmandir Sahib as well.
  13. I never did a Punjabi GCSE, i learnt old skool, at the Gurdwara in Punjabi school with a chapal and i haven't forgotten since but on a serious note, I wish the writer of that article had done his research, there are no plans to phase out GSCE's like Punjabi, they are being modified to tie in with new government regulations, I hate stuff like this, if you look at the source of the article is the Times Of India, hardly a relevant source when it come's to matters in the UK.
  14. This is probably deserves it's own thread but i'll put it here anyway to put life into perspective, we are debating a film that will be forgotten about in a few months while in the real world this happened. Kind of put's it all into perspective, a Raagi passes away doing what he loved, reciting the name of god and singing his praises.
  15. The unfortunate truth is the younger generation are not trusted by the older to lead the way, i saw a video the other day of Harmandir Sahib shot from the air by drone, i tell you what, my heart skipped a beat, it was a thing of beauty, showed it to my dad, he loved it, turned out he knew the guy in India who had produced it and apparently it took him 18 months to get permission to shoot it. Nanak Shah Fakir has high production values but unfortunately it will be too marred in controversy for people to appreciate it, I've worked in the creative sector all of my life and I have at time's played with the idea of doing Sikh educational work but i don't think i could deal with all the politics that come with it.
  16. It's not about calling anyone an extremist, just this morning i saw a new piece on one of the channels that show Punjabi news about a protest against the film done peacefully by having a motorcycle rally but then when they interviewed them they were calling for the death of the producer of the film, so what started out as a peaceful protest turned into what could easily be classed as extremism. As far a lining pockets, i think we should start with our own backyards first, go into you local Gurdwara and ask for a proper account of the financial incomings and outgoings, them committee members ain't driving brand new Merc's for no reason you know, maybe we should tackle that first, at least the producer of this film has openly said that he or any member of the production crew won't take a penny from this film, they'll donate all profits. I'm not saying it's right to make a film depicting our Guru's, what i am saying is, if you disagree with it, generally the pen is mightier than the sword. Don't get me started on the visual quality and the quality of the animation of that film, like i've said earlier, the message was correct. The amount of money the SGPC has they could bankroll Disney for life yet they can't invest in educating the future generation's using up to date methods.
  17. For me it is but there seem's to be an unhealthy strain of Sikhism forming which, in my book, is becoming more and more intolerant of anyone that has a different opinion and if we carry on down this path, as you mentioned, there will be comparisons with the way certain Muslims behave and sooner or later we'll be on the front page of the Daily Mail. I'm not a fan of the Sikh channels, i'll openly admit that but they do, on occasion provide some good programmes but on the whole i feel they do more damage than good, they seem to be an extension of the Gurdwara committees (or the white beard club as my dad calls it), I've been bought with with the saying "Man Neeva, Mat Uchi", i think someone need's to teach the presenter's on these channels the meaning of that.
  18. There was a comment about a girl involved in the production of the film, a photo was found of here wearing skimpy clothes, the presenter asked the producer if he thought that was appropriate, turned out it was the producers daughter and someone had photo-shopped a photo of her a while ago (pretty common in India, they love that kind of stuff over there), upon explaining this the producer was interrupted, they were basically out for blood, if the producer tried to defend himself he wasn't given a chance, I don't mind Paxman style interviews where the person is grilled but it has to be balanced, the gut presenting this didn't have a clue, total lack of professionalism.
  19. There was a discussion about this film on one of the Sikh faith channels here in the UK the other evening, i was absolutely disgusted at how the presenter and his two guests berated and be-littled the producer of this film who was being interviewed by them, whether you agree or disagree with this film you should have a level of respect and decorum especially if your on tv, these guys had none of it, deplorable behaviour, they had a chance to question Harinder Sikka and put their viewpoint across but all they did was come across as fools in my opinion.
  20. You got a link for that, can't seem to find it.
  21. First i've heard of it (maybe i live under a rock or something), I've not come across any Sikh's (practising and even non-practising, well apart from one many years ago) who have converted to other religions, care to cite any examples or have any links with more information or is this an assumption you've made because of what's happening in India at the moment (and even that's blown out of proportion). As far as converting people back, Sikhism isn't a proselytising religion, we don't convert people, what were you planning to do, go on the High street and kidnap a few people in the hope of convincing them to come into Sikhi, grow up fella, Sikhism isn't a number's game, quality over quantity.
  22. You know it's bad when even Badal's complaining, but that moustache though, what can you say, it's hypnotic.
  23. You can try to, people have been trying to for god know's how many year's, as a faith we are not meant to practise any discrimination whatsoever yet we can't even sit in the same Gurdwara, people of different caste's will go and open their own Gurdwara's. I'll give you an example that involves my own family, most are moderate Sikh's (i.e. not amritdhari but do everything that is required, some have cut hair or beards but that's beside the point), they will actively talk down about other castes, when I tell them that you can't bow down to Guru Sahib and then turn around and discriminate I'm made out to be the bad guy, so it's a problem that has to be solved at a grass roots level, family to family, while i've said before i'm not a fully practising Sikh i'm on the path, i can't change those who have come before me but i'm going to try my level best that my kids grow up without this thought process.
  24. Caste has nothing whatsoever to do with any religion, it's a cultural phenomena that is mainly practised in the Indian sub-continent, lower "caste" Indian's/Punjabi's/Hindu's/Gujurati's/Sikh's convert to Christianity because they feel they will be treated as equals but they seem to forget that they are still living within a country that actively practises the caste system and an unfortunate truth is that we "Indians" have taken this practise with us into the western world, it's all fine and well saying "Sikhism treat's all as one" but the reality is very different. I saw a short documentary a while ago about a small Gurdwara in India where those of lower caste's are given karah parshad through a different door than the rest of the sangat, absolutely disgusting behaviour.
