World Sikh University (U.K.)

Recommended Posts

I was browsing the World Sikh University website.

Check out the Management team:

http://www.sikh-uni.ac.uk/photogallery01.htm

Looking at the Management Team I was suprised to see tha the "Sikh University" is managed by a mix of "Sikhs" and non-Sikhs. And most of the "Sikhs" dye their beard jet black blush.gif ! (Dying beard = against rehat, and a Sikh who does is considered a "Tankhaaheeyaa" (liable for punishment/chastisement)) rolleyes.gif

If we think like this then when how will sikhi spread? We should not label all hindus as corrupt, there are christians who teach about yoga, it doesnt have to be only hindus teach about yoga. Lets not be so difficult , and how do u say with so much certainty that they dye, they still might have black hair.

Woops

I didn't imply - Hindu were corrupt!

Nor did i wish to imply that we should go around punishing Sikhs who dye their beards.

What i wished to highlight is that how are we are going to teach Sikhi to people when the "Sikh" institution is being run by people who are not following Sikhi/Rehat properly?

I dont agree that I should go around punish sikhs who dye their hair, the rules are laid, and its a personal business. No one should have the right to punish someone who has dyed hair

Yes I agree we should not punish those that dye hair. And lets forget about sikhi for a moment, ...

ANYONE dyeing one's hair specifically to look "younger" is an indicator of immaturity, fear, and <banned word filter activated> like conformity...this has got to be one of the saddest accepted practices of human beings... then again who am i to judge 90% of the human race.

Don’t be too put off by the “judging” here. It’s difficult to get the full meaning of someone’s intentions or views in casual writing.

First there is diversity amongst the people here just as anywhere else. So not everyone is as opinionated as others. Second the very meaning of the word “forum” as in sikhsangat forum implies “to judge”. A court is a type of forum. Secondly, to simply put forth an opinion is to “judge”. We could even say that you are judging by asking why everyone is judging.

I think the important thing is how we “judge”. There would not be much of a forum if people did not share opinions which are a type of judgment.

A common stereotype is that there is some a religious zeal of the uneducated involved in judging. That “judgment” is very mislead. In fact many sikhs today accept being slapped in the face repeatedly because they fear of being too strongly associated with their faith. This is where many extremely liberal minded and educated sikhs do go against the grain and speak up against certain things.

You will see athletes fierce in competition but socializing together afterward. You will see attorneys, businesspeople, schoolmates etc. all be able openly express their fierce opinions or compete but be able to have respect as human beings for one another. Our guruji’s expressed fierce opinions and could be construed as the most judgmental figures of their time, but their only true judgment was love.

As you suggest, however, we can always learn how to express our views in more communicative ways. In addition, if one believes in not judging then one must be able to view many different strong opinions without taking anything personally. The ability not to judge is not simply the absence of something, but an awareness in attitude and outlook.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
