Satsriakal everyone, just a post to ask people what is the right way to meditate ie. crossed legs, straight back, what you should be thinkin of etc. etc.... What is the right positions and what should be your thoughts?

I try to really concentrate on the paht I'm reciting (pronounciation, meaning etc. as much as possible) itself and shut out all other thoughts and distractions. Can anyone really calrify on this please?

Thank You,

The posture helps you regain your awareness and should not allow you to fall into sleep. So which ever posture helps you remain awake thru your meditation is good. Generally speaking it is important to keep your back straight as it helps you remain awake and does not allow you to slowly fall back into sleep mode. Place your legs into a comfortable position of cross-legged or straight out, but do not overstrain yourself. Your whole postures should be comfortable enough for you sit for atleast 10-15 mins without feeling uncomfortable. . Your shoulders should be relaxed, not slouching, but relaxed and never begin a meditation without a Prayer.

As an FYI you can check out this link which defines all major types of Asanas for Meditation. The link probabaly will take you into far more detail then you care to know, but it is certainly a good read.

Thoughts itself are the hinderence in meditation. you should not try to induce any thoughts. Meditation (Dhyaan) is not thinking of something, in Dhyaan the practitioner is trying to go beyond the mind and thoughts into no-mind. Meditation begins only then when there are no thoughts, whatever you do before this state is only preparing for the state of meditation such as following certain set of Instructions.

Good topic ---

ok, do not follow any kind of blind ritual... if someone says meditate with your thumbs in your nose...or ears................. :) . lol (thats an example)

Do whatever is comfortable for you, and allows you to be peaceful and ready for meditation.

Then... from bani there is a great line... hehe
