Gurbani is by Bhagat Ravi Daas Ji in Raag Sorath on Ang 658 of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj:

jau qum igirvr qau hm morw ]

jo thum girivar tho ham moraa

If You are the mountain, Lord, then I am the peacock.

jo thum cha(n)dh tho ham bheae hai chakoraa 1

If You are the moon, then I am the partridge in love with it. 1

O Lord, if You will not break with me, then I will not break with You.

I am not sure if this translation is correct. I have seen often peacocks in fields in India. We hardly see peacocks on mountains.

the peacock and the mountain metaphor isn't used much in Gurbani. The peacock is described as enjoying singing, dancing on the mountainside when there is thunder & clouds are low in the sky - e.g. Ang 983:

myr sumyr moru bhu nwcY jb aunvY Gn Gnhwry ]4]

maer sumaer mor bahu naachai jab ounavai ghan ghanehaarae ||4||

The peacock dances on the mountain, when the clouds hang low and heavy. ||4||

translations are only so reliable & my own interpretation may be wrong - putting it in the context of the shabad: To encourage us to chant the Lord's Name - Maharaj uses metaphor such as the Moon and the Partridge, or the lamp and the wick, or the sacred place and the pilgrim to describe the inseperable, unbreakable Love of a devotee of God.

Thanks for your explanation. It still not convinces me. The word 'moraa' occurs eighteen times in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Every time it expresses 'mine'. Why the word 'moraa' is translated 'mor' (peacock) here? This is a riddle for me.

Also, according to the translation provided this would mean that all peacocks reach God as mountain. Peacocks living on plains have no chance to meet Girivar (God).

It is right that a peacock dances also when clouds are low. It does not matter if he is on a mountain or plains.

I feel that word 'moraa' has nothing to do with a peacock as translated.

veer ji most likely you have a greater knowledge of gurmukhi than me. in the above quote 'mor' is used with reference to a peacock on a mountain so chances are this too will be, especially as metaphors are used throughout the shabad. i dont think 'mine' in its place would make much sense. morw 'moraa' is normally used to express 'mine' but can also in the same spelling mean 'peacock' in the same way as qorw 'toraa' can be used to express 'Your/Thy' but also in the same spelling can mean 'break/rip' for example:

'break/rip':

hai ko-ee saajan pardaa toraa.
