Guest Guradhaev maathaa

is it mandatory to read this slok before and after every bani ( as guruji says in the slok that read it in begining and after)....or is it out of chioce?

This Shabad is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Gauree on Pannaa 262

guradhaev maathaa guradhaev pithaa guradhaev suaamee paramaesuraa ||

The Divine Guru is our mother, the Divine Guru is our father; the Divine Guru is our Lord and Master, the Transcendent Lord.

gurdyv sKw AigAwn BMjnu gurdyv bMiDp shodrw ]

guradhaev sakhaa agiaan bha(n)jan guradhaev ba(n)dhhip sehodharaa ||

The Divine Guru is my companion, the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my relative and brother.

guradhaev dhaathaa har naam oupadhaesai guradhaev ma(n)th nirodhharaa ||

The Divine Guru is the Giver, the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails.

The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.

guradhaev aadh jugaadh jug jug guradhaev ma(n)th har jap oudhharaa ||

The Divine Guru existed in the very beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.

Baba Harnam Singh used to read it at the start and end, and he believed it should be read at the start and end of everybani.

I personally do not read it at the start and end of every bani, however if it should or should be read.....only guru sahib knows for sure

There's 2 versions to this Salok, the one you have above and the same again but without the last Tuk. I've always done the Salok without the last Tuk before I do my Paath and then the version above after I've completed it.
