Punjab: INTACH seeks heritage status for Golden Temple

Amritsar, Nov 30. (PTI): The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has submitted a proposal before UNESCO for securing world heritage status for the Golden Temple at Amritsar.

"After completing the documentation work on the Golden temple, at the behest of the Punjab government, INTACH has submitted a detailed proposal to UNESCO, to recognise the holy site as a world heritage monument," says S K Misra, Vice Chairman, INTACH.

"The Vatican, and even many Buddhist sites have been declared as heritage monuments by the UNESCO, so why not Golden temple, one of the most revered places in India and visited by thousands every day," says Misra.

Once a site is declared as a heritage site by UNESCO, the heritage committee provides technical cooperation for safeguarding of that property, especially in cases, when local resources are inefficient, he says.

If the UNESCO accepts it as a heritage site, people all over the world would come to know about it, tourist infrastructure can be created around the place... the ultimate aim would be to put it on the world tourism map, he says.

Meanwhile, the state government has already constituted a committee to collect relevant material on the history of the Golden temple, the cultural heritage of the city and the works of Sikh Gurus.
