vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੈਸੀ ਲਸਨ ਕੀ ਖਾਨਿ ॥

kabeer saakat aisaa hai jaisee lasan kee khaan

Kabeer, the faithless cynic is like a piece of garlic.

ਕੋਨੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਖਾਈਐ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧੭॥

konay baithay khaa-ee-ai pargat ho-ay nidaan

Even if you eat it sitting in a corner, it becomes obvious to everyone.

"saakat" = faithless cynic

"lassan" = garlic

"khaan" = eat

"konay" = corner

"baithay" = sitting

"kha-ee-ai" = eat

"pargat" = obvious, apparent

"nidhaan" = becomes - refers to the time period

In this 17th Salok, Bhagat Kabeer Ji describes the life and actions of someone who has forgotten Maharaj for the sake of the world. As we all know, garlic has a very distinct smell and flavour, and can usually be smelled from a distance. Bhagat Ji says that even if one tries to eat it in secret, the smell will linger and sooner or later someone will know you've eaten it.

In the same way, it doesn't matter how much a person tries to hide their sins or bad thoughts and deeds. In the end Maharaj knows all, and it will come out either in this life or the next. We forget this a lot - that Maharaj can see our every move. It's like having permanent CCTV surveillance on us every second of the day. If we remember this more often, we'd live our lives in the ways Sikhs are meant to live our lives. And then why would we fear death when we know that we've lived our life to the best of our ability?

The only way we can remember Maharaj's presence by our side is ardas - to help us understand how to follow the path of Gursikhi. Maharaj has given us so much beautiful Gurbani, which we hardly take the time out to read. And then we wonder why things go "wrong" in our lives, or why we aren't happy. Maharaj couldn't have made it any easier for us (well, He could have, He can do anything, the point is, it's right in front of us) - He gave us all the answers. We need to follow and have faith. Even when it doesn't make sense to our peanut-sized-brains. And we need to remember that He's looking over our shoulder at every step. We also forget that He loves us. It's like He's texting us continually with His messages of love. Maybe we should text Him back.

And remember about the garlic...it smells.
