Dad's Ashes - Kiratpur Sahib

There is no specific requirement that you take ashes to Kiratpur Sahib. This has become a trend recently and almost a ritual that just like Hindus take ashes to the Ganga, Sikhs go to Kiratpur Sahib.

Any large or running body of water will do.

The only "ritual" I suggest you do is Ardaas before immersing the ashes. You may also wish to do Kirtan Sohila Paath before immersing them.

The difference between Sikhi and religions like Hinduism is that it's not very big on formalistic rituals. Just do what you feel is right.

doesn't it also destroy habitats that could have ben used by those same insects, though? Land is being wasted by bodies that serve no purpose.... and then people fear building on top of them beacuse of them being "haunted"...

and then those who are too attached to their relatives or friends who die will deem that an "important place', and visit that burial spot for years after...for what purpose? Burying doesn't really serve any true purpose...at least in my opinion

Gurfateh

At Patal Puri(Kiratpur Sahib) there will be people to guide about so called rituals.

But any way it is better that ashes are immersed in nearby water (sea or river)after doing Ardas that let God help us to overcome sorrow and be happy in sorrow also.

There is no need as such to go to Kiratpur but perhaps person tend to go to Haridwar or Kiratpur to change the sad surrounding as in new Area so sorrow is reduced.

So better to to Darbar Sahib instead.Anyway condolences from das.And do not woory about ritauls. If Akal wants even non Sikh relaives of Sikhs are salvaged if Sikh lives a good Life of a Sikh.
