Kabeer - What Does He Mean?

Recommended Posts

Kabeer, the pure drop of water falls from the sky, and mixes with the dust.

- Kabeer jee is talking about rain which falls from the sky. On the way down from the sky, it will get polluted (like acid rain) and become impure.

Millions of clever people may try, but they will fail - it cannot be made separate again. ||196||- Scientists etc who are "clever" can try, but they wont be able to seperate the pollution from the water in its liquid form.

(forgive my mistakes, there are many more learned people on this forum than me)

Everyone has their own connection to Gurbani...here's mine.

What i get out of this Salok is that Bhagat Kabir Ji is saying that no mater what, we cannot be made "pure" through our own little clever efforts. Like Guru Nanak Sahib says in Jap Ji Sahib, it doesn't matter how much we cleanse ourselves from the outside, or visit pilgrimages, or how silent we are, these things will not break the wall between us and Akal Purakh.

So Bhagat Kabir Ji is saying, don't waste your time on useless efforts. Do what counts - understand Gurbani, focus your attention, and only then will your actions, will your jeevan become pure again.

vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh

It helps if we read the entire Ang, or even just the shabads surrounding the one in question. The last Salok on Ang 1374 helps us to understand the first Salok on Ang 1375.

Kabīr nirmal būnḏ akās kī par gaī bẖūm bikār.

Kabeer, the pure drop of water falls from the sky, onto the dirty ground.

Bin sangaṯ io māʼnnī hoė gaī bẖaṯẖ cẖẖār.

You must acknowledge this, that without the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, it turns into burnt ashes.

Kabīr nirmal būnḏ akās kī līnī bẖūm milāė.

Kabeer, the pure drop of water falls from the sky, and mixes with the dust.

Anik siānė pacẖ gaė nā nirvārī jāė.

Millions of clever people may try, but they will fail - it cannot be made separate again.

We enter the world in the purest possible form - as babies we aren't affected by the evils which plague us at the moment; ego, attachment etc. These things grow as we grow. When a drop of water falls from the sky and lands on a lifeless piece of land, it's value is wasted. Bhagat Kabeer Ji is telling us that if a drop of water falls on a land covered in ash, the water is powerless to convert the ash to anything useful. The ground will not flourish unless the soil is fertile.

In the same way, we are like wasted drops of water if we keep the company of those who try to reject God. Without any good influence it is extremely hard to lead a good life - it's so much easier for a negative influence to bring down a positive one unless the positive influence is really strong. Bhagat Ji tells us to use the life we have wisely and make the most of it in whichever way we can.

Maybe someone could correct me here if I'm wrong, but I think the reference to dust in the second line is talking about earth/mud/soil. So here, Bhagat Kabeer Ji is describing the water being used to help the soil produce the vegetation or plants. The drop of water is completely absorbed by the soil - they are made to mix. Once they have mixed, it's near impossible to separate them again. When we find Sadhsangat, we begin to be influenced in a good way and step onto the path of Guru Saheb. At the end of the path we meet Guru Saheb and are completely merged into His love. It's impossible for anyone to separate love that strong - the love of the True Husband and His most beloved bride. They merge together and there is no difference between the two.

(Having said that, in both Saloks ਭੂਮਿ is used to describe the ground. Although in the first Salok this is qualified by ਬਿਕਾਰ which means it is dirty, diseased etc.)

Anyway I will stop for now - sorry if the above didn't make sense (there was a group of very loud youngsters playing games on the computer next to me). Perhaps someone could check Professor Sahib Singh's vichaar for a more accurate explanation.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
