Dear Sangat Jee,

I am very proud to announce that my parents are allowing me to become vegetarian - something i've wanted to be for a long time. I was just wondering what foods are out there for me to eat, such as lentils etc. Prefarably not large indian dishes as my mother wouldn't cook those just for me to eat daily. I am not a huge fan of loads of vegetables and i know its not all just about that. Please may you share any ideas on what i can eat daily for a balanced diet.

Many thanks, Your gora sikh blush.gif :TH:

On a practical level and as your not from an Asian Background (so wont know how to make 101 veg curries)

Iceland have a good Lacto-vegetarian range like burgers, pies, pasties, Vegetaran Cheese etc. Tesco does veg sasuages, veg mince, etc. If your local store doesnt stock it...internet shop it!

Check out your local Holland and Barrats...can get things like Mayonasse, vegan ham, bacon, veg roast etc. The range in western food available is massive.

And most produce is GM free, has less saturated fat and more protein than your average meat.

Gurfateh !

Dear Khalsa 123,

I have a vague memory from some of your posts that you are from Canada - apologies if you are not ! - so I guess you don't have Tescos or Holland & Barrett ( England is very 'Veggie friendly' - unlike much of N America)

Here are a few sites with recipes that might be of some use to you ( and of course to other Veggie members of SS - Peht Pooja ( 'worship of the stomach' seems to be a favourite pastime of some members - yes you know who you are - all those posts about Mr Singh's Pizza ! )

I am guessing you will be avoiding eggs so have included vegan sites as well

Many 'western' vegetarians will eat free range eggs - so many recipes include eggs - Vegan recipes do not have eggs - Many posts on SS ask about how to bake cakes without eggs - here is a good site which has recipes which substitute eggs for bananas ,soy milk etc - It is a UK site so the measurements are in UK standard 'Tablespoons' not N American 'Cups' - but I'm sure you'll figure that out or at least your Mom/ Mum will !

Hope that is of some use.

Enjoy!

Freed

Just to avoid any confusion - and any kitchen disasters !

here is a conversion table for tsp (Teaspoon) and Tbsp (tablespoon) for the N Americans

1/5 teaspoon = 1 ml

1 teaspoon = 5 ml

1 tablespoon = 15 ml

1 fluid oz. = 30 ml

1/5 cup = 50 ml

1 cup = 240 ml

2 cups (1 pint) = 470 ml

Once again hope that helps !

Freed

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

I'm glad to hear the news! Congrats! I know its hard for western/white families who are very much the "meat and potatoes and gravy" kind, to understand why someone would go Veg, and how they can "survive" off just that! But, it has been proven to be a very healthy diet that reduces the risk of cardio-vascular diseases, obesity, and high blood pressure. This is of course only true if you avoid too much SALT and too much fried oils and butters. (AHEM).

You don't have to just eat "Indian food", but I must say that since a lot of Indians are vegetarian, their diet is quite balanced and a good guideline: dhal/protein, rice or roti/bread and cerials, raita/dairy, sabji/vegetables. You basically get your 4 food groups all in one.

Other very healthy choices are vegetarian Mediterranean, Greek, Japanese... actually there are many! You'll probably want to explore around, the vegetarian choices we have today given the global market are very vast! And as one said above already, there are mock-meats available made from SEITAN, and of course there's Tofu.

Since I've basically had to learn the ropes of the lacto-vegetarian diet myself, I've collected a good bunch of recipe websites and guidelines:

http://www.vegetariantimes.com/

Read their "vegetarian starter kit, and also they have recipes.

Other very good websites, jam-packed with recipes, just read the ingredients to find the vegetarian ones...or search vegetarian.

Ok... I think that's enough now. HAHA! blink.gif

Another thing I want to say, is that you can always alter recipes to make them vegetarian. You can still eat vegetarian spaghetti and pizza... you can also substitute the "meat" part with seitan/mock-meat incase of "meat and potatoe" dinners. You can substitute tofu mixtures in shepard's pie, and also as a "mock-scrammbled eggs". You can also substitute eggs in baking recipes with a "vegetarian egg replacer" mix you can find in many major stores in their health food sections...

Ok, well good luck!

I understand i am making my own request in someone else's topic but this may help the original poster so here goes.

A while ago someone had posted about a veggie restaurant in london i believe. Dishes were quite expensive but they could make almost anything veggie. They had quite a good range of veggie burgers. I went on their site and i remember it was redish or dark coloured. Now obviously i cant remember the url. So i would be very grateful if someone could post the link.

It was quite posh yet not so posh restaurant. lots of dishes, all veggie.

thanks.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
