It depends what your doing it in, certain masters have their own special funding you can apply to, e.g. astrophysics

find out from the people running the masters course, if there is funding available, they will encourage you to apply for it.

I have to agree with the above, it all depends on what you are studying. If you are into IT then masters degree is useless in areas such as software development where experience is sought after. Degree is good enough to get your foot in the door.

Let us know what your subject is.

Im hoping to do a masters in Pharmaceutical Science. Im just looking for a general guide as to how much it will cost in terms of tution fees.

Well I'm not from the UK (Im from Canada), but I would assume its somewhat similar. For doing a masters program, especially one in a science area such as Pharmacy or Medicine, you may (or may not) have a choice between a course based masters, and a thesis based masters. I recently finished a thesis based masters, which i think are better for several reasons:

  1. You don't really need to apply... you find a professor that is willing to take you, and they will do the necessary paperwork to get you into the program
  2. Instead of paying tuition, you GET PAID. Usually most universities have a guaranteed salary awarded to masters and PhD students, especially those that are doing a thesis based masters. (in my case, it was about $18K a year) In addition, some professors are nice and will in addition to that, pay your tuition as well (in my case, about $5K a year).

But again, these all vary. Your best bet is to send an email to the Department of Pharmacy or whatever that you are interested in, and they will have their graduate student coordinator send you the details. Good luck!

you'll have to pay for your masters its about £4000 i think, becuase of the whole 'top up fees'. If LEA paid your fees before they should pay around £2000 of that depending on your circumstances. You can apply for grants if you need help paying the rest, but which specific grants are available, depends on your university and what prgrammes thay have in place for students who need help with fees!

Failing that you can always take another £3500 form student loans.

The one thing about science degrees is that your degree isnt worth anything untill you get some experience! your going to start on rubbish pay, untill you have about 2 years experience working in industrial labs!

so if you are going to have pay back a huge student loan it mite be better to work for a bit 1st then do your masters. When you finish your masters you can apply for jobs in excess of £20k becuase you'll have both experience and education.

hope that helps paji!

I'm a researcher/lecturer and pharmacist working in a School of Pharmacy/Pharm Sci.

It will cost quite a bit to do the MSc, but some are funded.

It will be useful if you want to make progress in the pharma industry, but i would suggest doing the 1 year MSc then do a PhD (many funded PhD are available). Once you have done that you can excel in industry. if you went into industry without a PhD, you would only excel so far.

Typical PhD stipends are around 15k, typical salleries in the pharma industry with a Msc would be about 25k max.

Typical PhD graudate starting salleries are around 35+k and after a few years in industry you can secure in excess of 45k.

Good luck, PM if you need any more advice.

Hi

I am doing a Masters. So think carefully about it

DON'T:

do it so you stay a student

think its going to be easy

if you don't want to stay in the field of your masters

becuase you don't know what to do

DO:

If you enjoy it

If you want to do phd after

My fees are 4000 and accommodation is expensive. You get NO funding unless its a 4 yr combined with undergraduate study. Phds are funded and if you have an idea of what you wnat to do and research it well you can go straight into one and they are funded.

Any more q's feel free to ask!

Good luck

Hey, well i definently want to stay in this field of my my masters and i do enjoy it so i guess thats a good thing. Its funny how you said "you get NO funding" because you can actually apply for funding but there is no guarntee you'll get it. Anyways at the moment i haven't really got any specific questions.

Thanks for the advice :D
