Students to begin indefinite hunger-strike against Indo-US Nuclear Deal

Members of Students Against Nuclear Power (SANP) with support from leading journalists, social activists and other organizations will be beginning an indefinite hunger strike starts from 4 pm today (10 March 2008) in New Delhi at Jantar Mantar.

SANP is a group of students of Masters of Social Work (MSW) from St Joseph's College, Devagiri, Kerala.

They demand that India should withdraw the signing of Indo-US nuclear deal.

Eminent author Susan George (Transnational Institute, Amsterdam), senior Journalist Praful Bidwai, Ramon Magsaysay awardee Dr Sandeep Pandey and others will also be joining the fast today.

The fast is to raise more awareness and invoke public consciousness that Indo-US nuclear deal will cause serious social, economic, political and environmental impacts. This fast shall also discuss more cost-effective and environmental friendly alternatives for energy like wind energy, bio-gas and photo-voltaic centres.

"Indo-US nuclear deal will jeopardize the country's development and self-reliance" said SANP members.
